Analysis The Matt Taberner effect

There are two Tabses: the dry weather one and the wet weather one. The former is pretty good. Elite mark, pretty handy up and down the wings, straightens up the structures, probably averages two goals a game. The latter is ****ing shithouse. Do the benefits of keeping the dry weather Tabs outweigh keeping the wet weather one? Will the wet weather one get better? I don't know but right now I'm leaning towards persevering with him.

Nah mate, Kersten and walters any day of the week and twice on Sundays over Tabs in a clutch goal situation.
Or..

If he hasn't kicked a bag by now he won't.

Ben brown crashes packs.... Tabs falls under them

Tabs issue is that he doesn't have enough between the ears and lacks footy smarts.

How many 50mpenalties did he give away this year foe encroaching on the mark?

If someone is chasing him and we can get value for him do it. We won't look back in 2 years after developing brander and Cox
If he hadn't kicked a bag by now, he won't (you know, entering his prime and with more experience). We get it, you hate Tabs, judging by your comments, I don't think you've actually watched him the past two seasons.

What if I told you that you need to keep drafting talls even if you already have talls on your list?

So no key forward then
Three teams need midfielders.

All four teams really want to rocket up the ladder fast.

Talls take time. All teams with a better have elite young talls.

Fogarty is more of third tall than a key forward.

Hayes is getting smashed in the ruck at TAC but out marking smaller players. His mobility is a major weakness and is a total flight risk.

The other talls are key backs with not a lot of skill especially kicking.

No shit, which is why it would be idiotic to get rid of Taberner. There's no guarantee we'll get Brander and there are no other real KPF options in the draft. It's a massively optimistic assumption that Brander is going to be the KPF of our dreams. We may not even draft him, and even if we do, there's no guarantee he'll end up being any good. And even if he does end up being good, it won't be for at least 4 years.

Yeah but so does Ben Brown. Completely one dimensional and as vanilla a full forward as you'll find. But he manages to get enough of the ball and he's a great kick on goal.

Not that Tabs is a Ben Brown clone by any stretch, but if he can fix up his kicking - which given he kicks straight in the WAFL is probably more between the ears than anything technical - he's very capable of being a 2-3 goal a game forward, with the occasional bag of 5 or 6.

If we can improve our delivery into forward 50 that will help all of our forwards - Taberner included.
He roams to get his marks and kicks, so when he does get a shot on goal he needs to settle and steady after covering so much ground. Difficult task.

Looks like Tabs manager has put off talks until after the WAFL grand final, the club has offered an extension but they won't look at it yet.

I think it is looking likely he is gone.......

My 2 cents:

KPF's take time, look at Hawkins and we are not going to get a decent KPF through trading, no one wants to come

Crabinar is slowly turning into Grabinar with his marking improving over time

If he decides to stay we should give him two more years minimum on 400k + bonuses for games played, number of goals

If he leaves we should get a 2nd rounder

Grabinar, ha ha I like it. That's what's turned me around this last season or so. He just didn't have a good enough mark to be a decent tall at one point. Besides those few freaks around the league that have freaky good hands, he's definitely as good as you'd expect from an AFL tall. The fact that it's improved so much should be reminder that you don't want to judge too quickly. He's starting to use his body better too in recent times. As long as he's tracking in the right direction, and he is, there's no reason he doesn't stay.

His steady improvement over the years is the best part of Tab's game. Its not that he is great today (he really isn't), but that every year he has shown a willingness to listen to the coaches, work hard and get better. He is definitely tracking in the right direction.
His improvement over the years is another sign that the "Lyon can't develop players" meme is just bullshit.

Sheesh Tabs must have been drinking all that koolaid that 's been generously and enthusiastically mixed up for him in this thread. He's putting contract talks on hold? What does he think he's Buddy or something? I'd be shocked if he was playing for another club next year. And even more stunned if he performed better there than here.

If it was me, I'd give him another 2 years on the same coin he's currently on. He's progressing ok, but hardly setting the world on fire. Putting contract talks on hold??! Spare me. Talk about delusions of adequacy.

He'd be stupid not to put them on hold, it's good management. In every single way it's the right decision.

Perhaps more a product of Hale I thought?

Hopefully a few other clubs do make some serious enquiries, nothing makes you feel like you belong like other people wanting you. Would do wonders for his confidence.

Geelong and Richmond would certainly be interested, neither have a 2nd key forward or any succession plan for their 1 existing key forward. All it would take would be to offer him 2 years instead of 1.

I like that he hasn't sooked or whinged whenever he's been told to go back to Peel to work on something. The number of times that's happened to him, I wouldn't begrudge him, especially when Cam and Kersten seemed to get games unconditionally. Seems he's got a great relationship with the group and he has said he's settled in WA. IMO he's re-signing, just holding out on either more money/years/playing time.
