Keep our draft picks and get these 2 guys Coffield and Higgins

Name: Jack Higgins
Position: Midfield/small forward
Club: Oakleigh Charges/Vic Metro
DOB: 19-03-1999
Height: 178cm
Weight: 76kg
Draft range: 5-15

Summary: Consistent, ready made player who can win his own footy in midfield and can move forward and be equally dangerous around goal.

Strengths:

  • Consistency
  • Goal sense
  • Smarts in the contest
  • Endurance
Weaknesses:

  • Size
Overall:

Higgins is a supremely talented player who has been able to work his way into the midfield and show his skill on ball after starting the season as a small forward.

He can find plenty of the footy, averaging 25 disposals in the TAC Cup this season, while he kicked seven goals against the Bendigo Pioneers last month showing his prowess inside 50.

He has good touch inside the contest and is a smart player and should be ready to step straight into a senior AFL side next season.

He was recently awarded the Morrish Medal for the best player in the 2017 TAC Cup season.

This " it may also have a bearing on Richo's coaching career ".

Trading in B graders for pick downgrades so we can draft more B graders may help Richo in the short term but will hurt the club in the medium to long term and should be avoided imho.

We have discussed at length our need for A grade talent, if we can't trade it in then we must take first round picks to the draft.

It could go either way, internally the club seem to have an expectation that we are already in a position to be playing finals. If he doesn't make finals I reckon he's ****ed no matter what.

I have started to begrudgingly rate Geelong a lot higher than I have in recent times. There is a similarity in what they have and us, it's a strength as well as a weakness. Apart from Dangerwood they are a team of solid and deep Bs, it gives them an advantage in that no one comes with huge offers for their talent and gives them a perpetually underrated profile. We have got to get some match winners on the books either by development or trades but once we do we aren't far away. I can see them playing in a GF again and if they get there they wouldn't fear either team much.

It should give us a bit of hope for the future at least.

I have watched some of higgins.
I cant judge what his potential is, but at this stage im unexcited.
Seems like a poor mans billings.
Slower thinking, slower hands, less accurate field kicking.

Would have been stupid to let Lonie walk given the investment of game time he has been given and shown glimpses.

Makes a lot more sense to me than a lot of the other players we have given deals to recently.

So are you saying GC have no A grade talent that might want out.

Happy with both of those signings. Lonie gets a chance for at least another year, could still end up being a valuable player. I was a bit worried about Savage getting 3 years which I thought could potentially hurt us down the track if he reverted back to his form earlier in the year. Two years is a good result though, worst case he ends up being good depth.

Jack Martin has much more upside than Andrew Gaff ....

They are like opposites though, Martin is inconsistent and Gaff the opposite. Martin is less of mid and could play the Savage role or the Billings role and has never consistently managed to string games together. Gaff is an absolute beacon of consistency, he will get his 25 to 30 possessions most weeks and runs all day. Gaff more of a priority but Martin has the potential to be special in the right environment. Gaff is not an exciting option but he will at least deliver what we need, same with Aaron Hall.

Striking resemblance to Dal Santo.

Respect your opinion but having read this I think he might be a bit better than you think.

ACK Higgins has firmed his draft credentials, after taking home the 2017 Morrish Medal.
The dynamic midfielder/forward became the first player from the Oakleigh Chargers to claim the award for the TAC Cup’s best and fairest player, edging out Calder Cannons skipper Brad Bernacki by two votes.

The honour caps off a hugely successful year for Higgins, who also won Vic Metro’s MVP and best and fairest awards, as well as gaining selection in the U/18 All-Australian team.

Past winners of the Morrish Medal have gone on to have great success at AFL level, including Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer (2007) and Essendon skipper Dyson Heppell (2010).

The past two winners — Clayton Oliver (2015) and Hugh McClugagge (2016) — were both top-five draft picks.

Champion Data has compared the probable top-10 draft pick to Brisbane midfielder Dayne Zorko — but when it comes to Higgins’ numbers, they’re simply incomparable.

Of Higgins’ 32 games Champion Data has covered, he has topped 100+ ranking points on 30 occasions. In 2017, Higgins’ 146 TAC Cup ranking points has been the best in the competition.

So are you saying GC have no A grade talent that might want out.
Not at all, of course they have plenty of A grade talent which I would be more than happy to trade for.

I just don't want to trade down for B graders, we are past that point imho.

If there is a money ball player we fancy trade fringe players or later picks but keep your hands of the first rounders.

D Mac is a spud and should be dominating by second year skinny or not

All players have reached their potential by second year
The problem for him is that this latest season was his 3rd year and we kept hearing what a great preseason he had, yet it didn't seem to make any difference whatsoever to the sort of footy he played when in the seniors, and by the end of the year he had been comfortably passed by Brandon White, who was in just his 2nd season and has a fraction of the endurance.

The much cleaner Bailey Rice will also be every chance of passing Dan in the not too distant future as well, unless he gets a wriggle on.

I hope he makes it, because he's got some really good attributes (speed, intercept marking, courage, tackling, toughness, defensive aptitude, etc), but he desperately needs to improve his kicking, composure/decision making, and he needs to start finding much more of the ball, which I don't think comes naturally to him.

Unless he really improves on those weaknesses significantly, the only role I see him making it in is the lock-down role that Gears plays and I doubt Gears is going anywhere any time soon, so that makes it hard for Dan, and it could easily be that Rice will be better than him in that role anyway, which could make him next in line after Geary.
