Rd 1 2018 fixture guess

Thursday 7.20: Carlton v Richmond, MCG - gets 75k+ in bad years, no reason to change coming off a Richmond flag - will be 85k+ easy with the Tigers army growing

Friday 7.50: Collingwood v Melbourne, MCG - seems like both teams would be happy to ask for this match-up

Sat 1.40: Geelong v Sydney, Kardinia Park - good match-up, Geelong will want early KP matches. Swans in line to travel after 6 straight years of NSW round 1 games

Sat 4.40: GWS v Fremantle, Spotless - GWS not had a home season opener in a while. Fremantle will travel round 1 and AFL will try to have them Saturday to avoid putting them on Sunday straight up (1 less 6 day break compared to starting on Sunday)

Sat 7.40: West Coast v Essendon, Perth Stadium - think both WA clubs will ask for a big opponent to open their Perth Stadium games for. Essendon pretty good WA support and the AFL often has them travel round 1. West Coast were away in 2015 & 2017, Fremantle will get away round 1 2018.
Saturday night will just seal it as a sell-out, 60k or so capacity yeah?

Sat 7.40: Port Adelaide v St Kilda - Port will get a home game. Saints will travel. Had this match-up round 1 twice before

Sun 1.10: North v Gold Coast, Etihad - not an exciting match-up but North might be ok to have a lower drawing opponent boosted by round 1 numbers. GC will likely travel. Could be a Tasmanian game too.

Sun 2.40: Hawthorn v Adelaide, MCG - should get 40k plus to this

Sun 4.40: Brisbane v Western Bulldogs, Gabba - basically the 'leftover' match. Dogs will get a travel out of the way early, Brisbane get a half reasonable opponent to hopefully get 25k there

Given Round 23 last year and the quickly-returning rivalry between the two sides this game will crack 85k.

They deserve it more than 16 other teams

Doesn't meant shight.

If one team fights hard to get there (especially when they look to be a league above the rest of the competition), only to tarnish the biggest of days in footy with a horrendous performance like that, then they only end up just as deserving as the other 16.

Adelaide will be away in R1 2018, I am guessing possibly against North.

Richmond play Carlton in R1 (Thursday Night)
Adelaide play Richmond in R2 (Friday Night)

Round 2 is Easter, if it's a North home game for Good Friday I'd expect them to be on the road Rd1.

Actually I hope the AFL does Easter properly, has potential for non-stop footy.

Why wouldn't they have a derby first up to open the new oval? Did that for the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval....
They may well do, but its a waste commercially.
Derbies are big things regardless of when they are held. The opening of the new oval is also a big thing. They can get three big things out of it:
1. first game
2. first home game for the "other" team
3. derby (the first will be fairly early in the season anyway onw would think)
or they can roll two of those into one.

I'd rather such things didn't come into their thinking, but they do.

Actually Howard Littlejohn is right. Spotless will be unavailable. Easter is back closer to it's usual time this year and expect at least our first 2 home games at Manuka. Doesn't really matter their both home grounds.

Pretty sure both clubs were looking to make the dogs v Collingwood a permanent round 1 fixture. Or has that been ditched now?

No the other 16 teams aren't as deserving.
