For those that can't be bothered finding the article in the Docker's magazine:

The Fremantle Dockers are leaving no stone unturned in the search for the stars of the future as their Next Generation Academy eyes off indigenous and multicultural talent.

The club has already identified 10 players through the academy, who have all been approved by the AFL as potential future draft concessions. These concessions include four indigenous players who hail from the Kimberley in Jason Carter, 17, of Wyndham, Liam Henry, 16, of Derby, Isaiah Butters, 16, of Halls Creek and Leno Thomas, 16, of Kununurra and six players with a multicultural background from within Freo’s metropolitan zones in Thomas Medhat, 17, of West Perth, Manfred Kelly, 16, of South Fremantle, Joel Western, 15, of Claremont, Keanu Haddow, 15, of East Fremantle and twin brothers Christopher and Brandon Walker, 15, of East Fremantle.

Fremantle will play a crucial role in the development of these talented footballers, with players receiving individual education and training relating to skill acquisition, diet, strength and conditioning. The club will work closely with the players over the coming years, with the possibility of becoming an academy selection in the future when they are eligible for the draft.

THE KIMBERLEY

In the Kimberley, Fremantle have been allocated a region with a rich football history.

The club is aiming to provide strong development pathways for participants and engage stakeholders within the community to enhance existing AFL programs available to boys and girls aged 11 to 16 throughout the Kimberley.

Fremantle is working with Garnduwa, which describes itself as Australia’s only indigenous sport and recreation organisation, and to deliver training and education programs with the aim of not only identifying talent in the region but to also improve engagement in junior football.

Fremantle football operations coordinator Casey York said it was exciting for Fremantle to have the opportunity to play a part in the long-term development of football in the region.

“The academy training programs will incorporate skill-based training and will also include education aspects on areas such as leadership, personal standards, nutrition and mental well-being.”

With Garnduwa, Fremantle ran academy programs at hubs in Broome, Fitzroy Crossing, Derby, Kununurra and Halls Creek throughout a four-week period in August. Fremantle also undertook training sessions at Clontarf’s academies in Broome, Derby and Fitzroy Crossing. A further week of these training and educational sessions are planned for October in Kununurra and Halls Creek.

“The overall aim of the Kimberley academy is to enhance participation in Australian rules,” York said.

“Not only do we have access to talent in the region, we’re working to provide assistance and development to those coaches running these sessions and contribute to community development.”

In August, York visited Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Broome to attend clinics and present coaching seminars.

“The coaching seminars provided coach development to local coaches by demonstrating our drills and coaching techniques,” York said.

FREO’S METRO & MULTICULTURAL PROGRAMS

To assist in the development of metropolitan talent, Fremantle have been allocated five WAFL club regions, including East Fremantle, South Fremantle, Peel, West Perth and Claremont.

Fremantle’s Brady Grey, Michael Johnson and Harley Bennell joined Freo’s academy coaches to share their football knowledge over three talent days held across the metropolitan area.

From those sessions more than 200 talented youths across years 6 and 7 have been invited back to their respective zones for a four-week training block to prepare for a development carnival held in October.

In addition, Fremantle have been running multicultural programs for children aged 13 to 14, with multicultural players born between 2003-2004 invited to participate in training sessions during June and July.

More than 100 players registered and participated in the training sessions. These sessions included skill development and finished with an education component on leadership, personal standards and working in a team environment.

A curtain raiser was held on Sunday 16 July prior to Fremantle’s home Carlton Draught Derby, with 50 players selected and it is the club’s intention to re-engage everyone who participated in this program in 2018.

Great to have tendai back in a coaching capacity.

He will always be known as a freo person despite being at GWS for 12 months.

Always had a soft spot for him and found him as a mini cult hero with his unique name and dreadlocks.

Played over a 100 games for the club and will always be known forever as the 1st fremantle docker to kick a goal in a grand final.

So I wasn't sure at the time but I think my youngster is eligible for the NGA and maybe I should get him going along next year.
Played since he was five in East Fremantle district, pretty talented, loves his footy and Freo and I was born in Canada - he is Canadian by descent. Currently Year 6
Seems eligible as far as I can see unless anyone can tell me otherwise (like you need to be from Asia/Africa or something)...

Edit - Nope not eligible, have to be Asian or African to be considered multicultural...

Great to have Tendai back - ideal choice to attract the multicultural kids.

I reckon that of fundraising from Freo fans for clubs in academy areas would help. Of course, what I say, not what I do - I couldn't organise a sandwich at a picnic so I'm not volunteering to set anything up.

For those interested.

Next Generation Academy Development Carnival for yrs 6 & 7 at Atwell Reserve tomorrow between 10am and 3pm.

No Mzungu tomorrow but Brady Grey will be coaching the Claremont side.

West Perth, East Freo, South Freo and Peel also represented.
I will confess that in a time where the AFL is supposedly working towards en even national competition, the Next Gen or other Academies, and even things like F/S don't make sense to me. BUT it really does extend the depth of interest. Very excited to hear how this goes.

Keanu Haddow and the Walker twins will be playing at East Freo Oval against Swan Districts at 2pm on Thursday for those of you who want to see them in action. Haddow probably slightly higher rated than the twins, but all should develop in to very good players and all 3 will be available for the same draft. Haddow probably has a little more intent in the way he plays, he's a very tough kid and plays CHB and CHF, the twins more athletic at the moment, once they get into a professional environment they should learn heaps more about how to play, they have really good skills but are still quite raw and still developing.

Just at the game, Brandon Walker playing key Back, Keanu Haddow, Is just a few cm shorter than the Walker boys and 2x as wide in the shoulders, he is going to be a big strong tall lad and playing midfield, who likes a contest and has a big kick. Definitely one to keep a look out for. Is Keanu Haddow on Freo’s Next Gen list?

The family moved to Rossmoyne from Belfast in Ireland because of the great weather for the children and Mrs Haddow’s sister, who is a physio, lives close by.

The 9As were red hot from the first bounce with Keanu Haddow and Edward Curley showing some brilliant work through the middle. The game saw 9 Midwest boys take to the field which is fantastic to see and all played very well. Up forward Haddow, Simpson, Curley, Carroll Stedman and Dann were instrumental and the midfield contingent of Walker, Browne and Emery proved too strong and quick for the Bulldogs. Our defence was strong and the rebound off to our midfielders created our scoring opportunities. Josh Stedman had a very good second half in which he took some great marks up forward and kicked truly. Credit to our forwards for the accuracy in what was a brilliant display of football. The team work the boys showed was tremendous and they all helped each other out when need, which contributed to the dominant display. The Sharks finished 76-point victors.

EFFC – 17.8.110

SFFC – 5.4.34

Best: Joshua Browne, Edward Curley, Josh Stedman and Keanu Haddow.

Goals: Haddow 3, Simpson 2, Curley 2, Carroll 2, Dann 2, Stedman 2, Tirant 2, Barlett 1 and Sandy 1.

The 9As were almost untouchable in their dominant display over East Perth. Right from the first bounce the boys were red hot in their attack on the football. The Sharks kept East Perth goalless for the entire game which is unbelievable. The midfield brigade were exceptional and our forwards too clever. Tom Grier and Edward Curley were outstanding in the midfield and Campbell Tirrant was potent up forward.

Fremantle’s NGA isn’t just for the Kimberley region, with the club also working on developing players from multicultural backgrounds all around the State.

The AFL has allocated five WAFL club regions to Fremantle’s NGA, including East Fremantle, South Fremantle, Peel, West Perth and Claremont, as well as the Mid-West, Lower South-West and Wheatbelt districts.

Two players who are already under Fremantle’s wings are 14-year-olds Chris and Brandon Walker.

The twins are part of East Fremantle’s development squad and were thrilled to come down to Fremantle to train with Bradley Hill and Brady Grey.

“It’s great being at Fremantle, it’s a huge club and they can really help you improve,” Brandon said.

“We can watch them as they go about it and to think that one day we could be doing what they do.

“It’s inspiring knowing that if we keep pushing we might be able to use these facilities and become as good as them one day.”

The pair were born in Ghana and moved over to Australia when they were four.

Brandon said he enjoyed playing football with the NGA, with different playing styles coming together from a variety of backgrounds.

“It’s great because everyone can show a lot of different skills and tricks, some that you haven’t seen in the game before,” Brandon said.

“It’s amazing to think that maybe one day we can be doing this at AFL level and inspiring kids of all backgrounds to take up the game.”
