Strategy 2018 Tactics and game plan thread

OK You guys, solve the problem. Who is our true CHF? isn't it embarrassing that EP's best player can't get a game for the Eags? I think the fall back situation of leaving Darling at CHF has cost us big time. Nobody seems to want to address the issue. OK they did try McGovern in a rob Peter /Paul situation. I think I have the answer CLONE McGovern.
NN is one of those ruckmen that cannot spend huge minutes on the ground and hence we need another ruckmen in the side and that means our third tall in the forward line isn't a genuine forward and does spend much up forward either. That leaves Darling as CHF. We had the same issue this year and vardy and petrie both spent more minutes rucking than up forward.

The solution to this is getting NN to spend more minutes rucking, or replacing darling completely. Another solution is simmo being a bit creative and using both Vardy and JD as NN's ruck cover. That would enable Vardy to play as a genuine CHF for us.

He can change the game plan all he likes but he doesn’t have the players to implement it.
Way to many poor skilled players by foot and hand in our side to really achieve much.
So unless he can find a way to make these players play as a team and be prepared to die for their team mates with pressure on the ball carrier, tackling and a ferocious attack on the ball (Bulldogs and Richmond last two years) then we will cruise around for another season.
This would require almost a 50% increase in work rate and effort across the board and I just don’t see these types of people on our list. And we need at least 30 on the list for it to work.
What our players believe is working hard Richmond would think is a recovery session.
There simply has to be enormous change in attitude and character from the group.

We haven't had a CHF since lynch .
Mcgovern isn't a CHF more of a FF
How ofter when forward do you see mcgovern go on a searching lead ?

To be fair he hasn't been given a huge amount of time to hone his forward craft. If we were to make the switch at some point we'd have to make the decision at the start of pre-season and have him training with the forwards the whole of the off-season. I'd go as far as to assign him a specialist forward coach. While we're at it they could also teach Nic Nat how to lead as well.

Just get a dvd of Richmond's finals series and follow that. Pressure pressure pressure for two and a half quarters until the opposition buckles at the seams, at which point your star midfielder rips the game open.

Is Shuey capable of Dusty-like levels? Given a total team effort like the Tiges displayed for the back end of 2017, why not? In fact, I'd suggest he doesn't need to to take his game to higher levels, he just needs those around him to display the same level of intensity.

Gov is a natural defender and is A++
But almost looks B grade up foward. id leave him in defence. Sooner start nic at FF and josh at CHF till nic gets into the swing of things. He's always created a lot of pressure

Vardy to CHF, rucking forward, but as has been pointed out, the problem is less in our forward line and more in our midfield. Kennedy and Darling look a million dollars when he's leading into space and the ball is hitting them on the tit. Less so when it's coming from such a height that the entire opposition defence has time to get there to spoil.

I think it's pretty simple...

Vardy plays CHF to get Darling 3rd tall defender mismatches.
We add more forward line pressure with our selection of small/mids - eg. Rioli, Venables
Naitanui returns, likely doubling our hit outs to advantage per game as a minimum over 2017.
Hurn, Shepperd, Duggan, Nelson given licence to RUN the ball out of defence.

I just think we will be a much more dynamic side in 2018. Our personnel issues really made us static and totally dependant on our talls dominating.

EDIT - Totally based on the presumption that our drafting and trading is aimed at improving the midfield. I am dead keen on Ah Chee and at least one other mature bodied player with some toe and ability to win the footy.

For the forward line, Cripps, Hill and Le Cras out, Jake Waterman, Rioli and Mutimer in (assuming their form holds up ok). Having Waterman as a marking target will let Darling push up the ground a bit more as a marking target. I definitely think Darling's a different player since his wife had the kid, I think he'll be gearing up for another good year

We are way to JK focused and must spread the load better.
Much of this is because of a poor system going forward where JK and JD present to the same area of the ground to often, they don't spread the defenders and hence make it so easy for the defence. We must be so easy to coach against knowing that the Eagles will just kick it in JK area instead of using free players.
This is a coaching issue and it has to be addressed. I also think it is a bit of the reason our small forwards look out of place and don't seem to be working hard, they sometimes do present to spread the defence and they are just ignored and we bomb it in to JK and JD.
JK is a champion but it is not about him winning Coleman medals or just being our star FF, the load must be spread these days especially with how hard sides getting players back deep in defence. To be honest we have done pretty well going forward with such a poor system.
It needs a big overhaul though for us to become better.

What do you think needs to tactically change? what can we do.

I don't buy into the premise that we don't have the cattle.

Leicester won the premier league with the lowest budget and one of the worst squads on paper with a superior tactical execution than everyone else.
