SOS won't pick on needs ..he will go with best talent ...He has said this on many occasionsIf the kids aren’t playing a lot of midfield minutes then it has to be seen as a pretty significant risk to draft them as a midfielder. Weren’t Plowman and Marchbank flagged as having midfield potential.
To play midfield they have to be able to gut run and stay in the play for four quarters. Some players don’t have that level of comitment and concentration. It’s not just about building a tank.
In the case of Rayner, he’d still be a top 3 pick if all he ever did was play as a forward, but is that What Carlton needs right now. I’m still undecided. I think they need a line breaker, a distributer and a goal scorer. There are many combinations of players that will give them this.
Best pick factors in the needs. Best pick at 3 we know is going to be a mid. I’d be surprised if they go for Hayes at pick 10, even though he’s a top 10 talent. Then pick 30 is all about needs.SOS won't pick on needs ..he will go with best talent ...He has said this on many occasions

Not exactly, as he did specifically say that we're looking at Mids and Forwards in this draft.
Played for the Dragons in the back end of the year, Balmer's website is just generating traffic now because there aren't Championship highlights for him.Big risk selecting a kid in the top dozen based on some highlights of school footy.
Q1: Who is the best prospect? Constable
Q2 Who do you want us to pick at #3? Constable
Q3: Who do think we will end up with at #3? Cerra
Q4: Who do you NOT want at #3? LDU
Based on medium - long projection rather than who will have the best impact next year and or short term
Overall, I think he's overvaluing the Metro & SA crops and undervaluing WA.
I'd like to play but keep changing my mind. Tough to pick this year.OK, I've got the bright lamp out. Time for some fun...
Q1: Who is the best prospect? (you've got pick 1 and don't have to worry about list balance or go home factor)
Q2 Who do you want us to pick at #3? Not necessarily the same answer as Q1
Q3: Who do think we will end up with at #3? (taking into account the preferences of Bris/GC/SOS)
Q4: Who do you NOT want at #3? (out of the more likely candidates; Dow, LDU, Rayner, Cerra, Fogarty, Stephenson, Brayshaw)
Let fly, my pretties.....
There is simply no way Constable is THE best prospect in this draft.Q1: Who is the best prospect? Constable

Dangerfield - didn't want to skip year 12How can you be so certain of that given recent history. Dangerfield, Pendlebury, Selwood, Lynch and Lever (arguable) were never in the mix for top 3 yet turned out the best player or close to it. None were top 5 pick candidates.
There is a strong correlation for the higher picks being the better players but as for the BEST player, it can still come from further back in the first round.
