Clayton and his team of recruiters at Gold Coast perform psychological profiling of all their potential draftees and look out for resilience, the love of a challenge and buying into a new culture as three key attributes in any young player.

But he said the AFL could help interstate clubs deal with homesick players by introducing a three-year CBA contract for rookie draftees.

"That's the single biggest thing that the AFL and AFLPA could do for the interstate clubs," Clayton said.

Will an extra contracted year make any difference when it comes to retention of draftees? Does it even matter if you're getting an extra year regardless?

Thoughts?

3 year contracts doesn't change the fact that Scott Clayton is perhaps the worst recruiter to ever have a job in this business.

He did a rather poor job with Gold Coast's list. He didn't recruit many tough players, instead deciding that outside players who could not win their own ball and would not tackle was a good idea.

Not paying attention? Hawks travelled 28 times from 2013-2015.
Boo hoo... during that time port travelled 30 times. As did the crows, as did freo, as did west coast. In the home and away season alone

If you’re trying to deny Melbourne based teams have a big advantage in regards to travel based on that one example you’re kidding yourself

Go start your own league then FFS.

What is it with Hawks fans and arbitrary time frames? Regardless travelling 28 times in the four across ’13 to '15 isn't as much as interstate teams and is less impressive when you account for the fact that they sell 3(?) home games a year.

Not against it.

At moment you get on list with 2 year contract via national draft and 1 year contract via rookie draft.

I almost forgotten conditions of pre-season draft method as rarely used now.
So if a player takes himself to pre-season draft is it right to say he documents his contract length and amount he plays for in this pre-season draft and anyone that drafts him there is agreeing to those terms beyond 2 year contract ?

No dice. Interstate teams get enough leg ups.
Wouldn't have a problem if it applied to every player drafted at every club. But this top 25 bollocks or only for non-victorian clubs can **** right off.
Well he meant every new draftee across the league. You must have read into it, something that not there to assume otherwise.
Good idea in principle. Three years is enough time for a young guy to make a life for himself in a new place and also settle in at his club and make it feel like a home he may like to stay for a good decade and then possibly move back to his original state if he wants to.

So we should listen to the guy who's recruited the worst midfield in the entire league?

Top 10 draftees - 4yr deals
Pick 11 -20 draftees - 3yr deals
Pick 21+ draftees - 2 yr deals

The clubs get what they want but they would have to pay the draftees a greater amount in their intial contracted years to offset them not being able to renegotiate the coin for a longer period.

That being said contracts don't mean much anymore. I would prefer if they just let teams trade without player consent.

Seriously, don't come join ours then complain about all the s**t you don't like.
I will do as I want. We are just as much part of this competition now as you guys are. We deserve fairness and equality.

You say stuff like “you don’t like it here you can get out” because you don’t want to address the fact that we do have a problem in this comp.
