If there was a specialist position for kicking in from a behind, Schumacher would be drafted for sure. Amazing kick under no pressure. I liken him to Trent McKenzie, and I think he could have similar troubles finding a position to settle into. Worth a rookie pick though. Matthew Day I could see him going late in the draft, say 60+. He, Alex Federico and Tom North shape as decent prospects to develop as inside midfielders.
Yeah both long shots and I'm thinking very late picks or more likely rookie picks. Really like the rawness of Day in particular - think he has plenty to work with. Schumacher, let's be serious, he's getting a few more votes purely because of the name. But he also seems pretty raw and I think when you look at project players a good kick is a decent thing to start from. I'm not convinced on a lot of the other midfielder smokeys as most seem a bit vanilla imo. For similar reasons I'd take a chance on some of the indigenous boys like Narrier - and obviously Kyron Hayden, Francis Kinthari and Cody Ninyette.

I'm still very keen on Crowden - think we should take him ay #71 before Geelong pick at #72. What's your thoughts on Giro?

He publicly stated that Freo are a joke and he is glad he doesn't play for them anymore. I guess it's not that big a deal but the guy seems like a dickhead. My opinion on his worth is tainted by this, but IMO even at this late pick he would not be a good choice. A list clogger, not much upside.

I remember the comments, but it seems he's matured and improved quite a bit since then.

I wouldn't consider him a list clogger at all, he would fill a role. We've got a serious lack of ball winners, particularly as depth options. The only midfielders to average over 20 touches a game at Peel were Rory O'Brien, Danyle Pearce, Tom Sheridan, Cameron Sutcliffe, Harley Balic and Josh DeLuca. Not exactly inspiring names. And obviously we've lost two of them, along with the experienced body of Nick Suban. Draft Schloithe, and he's instantly the #1 midfielder in any Peel side.

Considering we've got a number of picks in the 70s and 80s, we've got to be realistic with what will be available. Can't be loading up on 18 year old kids and expect them to come in and play good football straight away. A mature aged player like Schloithe would help our young midfielders and the developing forwards too. Maybe it won't be Schloithe. Perhaps we take Bailey Banfield, Jonathon Marsh or Patrick Wilson to fill that role. Personally, I'd take a couple of them.

Lets say Lachie Neale was to go down injured. Having someone like Schloithe ready to go who is pretty much guaranteed to get 20 touches a game, would have to be a better option than the alternatives. Even if he's already peaked as a player.

There are a few midfield 'smokeys' who I like. I don't think Will Walker will slide to our picks, but I like Bailey Henderson. And Tom North has a bit of Jack Graham about him. A lot of the indigenous boys like Narrier and Kinthari will be available as rookies.

Crowden would be a decent pick up. Can play midfield or as a small at either end. But I think will slip through to the rookie draft, even with his elite testing. Stefan Giro could sneak in late draft. Quick, smart and clean with the ball. If he was bigger, he'd be a certainty to be drafted as an outside midfielder.

Hi Chris what is the reason nobody pick Jordan Johnson yet ?

There is already a thread intensely debating who we take at picks #2 & #5 - debate boils down to 6 or 7 likely midfielder candidates.

But we still need to fill a further 8 squad spots in total, with picks 42, 60, 66, 71, 79, 83, etc - pretty low.

Positionally speaking, I hope we target a KPF & a ruck man. Going by the Draft Machine Range rankings, the blokes that sound interesting:
  • Noah Balta - swingman - 195cm / 95kg
  • Hugh Dixon - KPF - 195cm / 90kg
  • Tom McCartin - KPF - 193cm / 84kg
  • Callum Coleman-Jones - fwd/ruc - 201cm / 99kg
  • Nathan Kreuger - swingman - 196cm/89kg
  • Lloyd Meek - ruc/fwd - 202cm / 106kg
Personally, I'd be happy with Dixon - looks like he's got some real tall fwd skill / instinct. Also like the look of Meek - looks like he could be OK resting in the fwd line. Neither are Vic Metro boys which has some appeal.

Which players are other posters hoping for in the draft mid to low range?

If we go two mids early, like I reckon we will, the chances of us taking Starcevich at 42 are low IMO.

Reckon it'll be tall forward or ruck at 42, then mixed bag thereafter.

Given we have no real depth behind Sandi and Darcy, I think we may lean in favour of a ruck at 42.

Then I'd be happy with any of Kreuger, Dixon or even Wooller.

I really like Dixon but Bishop thinks his lack of pace will be a real issue at AFL level. Be interesting to see what others think.

I wouldn't be too worried him, if he was extremely fit then yes. I saw Sean Darcy on Monday down at
training and I couldn't believe how fit he now looks.
Also Dixon can ruck, natural footballer, I would take that over an athlete who may improve in time, or a
skinny beanpole whose body fails him with the extra weight added.

He looks pretty quick on the lead and a good goal kicker. Depends on whether Freo could find a place for a smart, stay home forward. Talk that WC have spoken to him quite a few times.

I think our Pick 42 has to be Krueger is he's still available - has Joe Daniher written all over him (or potentially, a bigger version of Jaiden Stephenson!). I like Tom McCartin too - but didn't realise he's still going to be studying year 12 in 2018!
I don't mind Schloithe(?) coming back with a cheap pick. It seems he's still mates with lots of players (via instagram posts etc). Getting delisted would suck, so perhaps it was an emotional and immature reaction. Sounds like he's grown up a bit now...
Dissapointed we aren't taking Liam Ryan in the various mock drafts going around. He is a jet.

Glen Jackovich destroyed Wayne Carey in plenty of games...
There are lots of great players that struggled against certain opponents. Let's not forget Nyhuis had the support of a good team defence with Luke Ryan, Sam Collins, Naughton etc.
It seems to be the main knock on Liam Ryan, that Nyhuis blanketed him too many times. I reckon Freo could develop him and teach him to overcome close tags. He's got the talent!

The only way to improve Liam Ryan defensively is play him against Nyhuis (handy forward) as a small defender, give him a shut down role on Nyhuis .

He was in 5 drafts out of 76 that I recorded. Knightmare had him in 2 of those (his own and the BigFooty trial run)
Top placement was 54 by Gee Dub. Gee Dub had the best of the BigFooty phantoms. I hope he is going to post another one this year.

Thanks for the kind words but I’m probably not in a position to do one this year. Have only been to one game and watched some champs stuff. Maybe when the draft machine comes out I could have a look but it wouldn’t be highly detailed.

Lol

He will be facing far stronger backlines than Peels defense if he gets an AFL game

The Peel team defence had one job. Stop Liam Ryan. He was the most dangerous forward. If he played for Freo our opponents would have to be equally worried about Walters, Bennell, Rayner and Stephenson.

Two players we don't have?

Liam Ryan doesn't help his players out defensively and spent most of his uneventful gf trying to get hang time than create goal opportunities.

Pass

Nah. Did you watch the Peel v Subi games? Nyhuis had him covered single handedly when he was on him. Love Liam's WAFL highlight reel but I don't think AFL clubs would have any problem negating him. Play him tight and a put on a bit of body work and he gets frustrated pretty easily.
