Compare China to Japan and Korea for example. Still dramatically behind in living standards.
You mean compare a giant agrarian society to smaller nations with a far greater urbanized population?

Centrally planned economies are generally terribly mismanaged (note both China and the Soviet Union suffered mass starvation due to economic mishandling) but that comparison is nowhere near adequate. China only in the past few years actually met the benchmark of more than 50% of the population living in urban rather than agrarian conditions - and the US has more kids living in poverty than in Russia.

I think one of the most frightening things about the level of knowledge I've encountered over the years is that people like this fellow I've quoted above consider themselves enlightened and knowledgeable.

It would take a considerable effort to write any sort of rebuttal to this post. Pages, really, to address each "point" up there in it's entirety and in a form capable of setting the record straight, as it were.. or at least as straight as possible given what we know.
And so, of course, most who do really know anything don't bother, and posts like this one above get a few "likes" and the jaundiced views of hate-filled folks hold sway... even when they're telling themselves they're the ones who are capable of viewing things with an open-minded equanimity not shared by most.

There are few things more disconcerting in debate as a half-educated man. One who approaches his learning and judgement emotionally rather than objectively.
Because that emotional approach is one of the very things capable of enabling other fools to gather under the same banner, and then... well, we've learned nothing really, have we.

It certainly was, I don't disagree at all.
Point you're missing is that that very same "duplicitous horror" was practiced by pretty much everyone, everywhere, all throughout history.
About the only thing separating the British from others at the time is that they were rather good at it. Technological advantage, mostly, in spite of your claims otherwise. Let's not forget that "India" wasn't really India before the British came either.

I mean, if it were to come down to a court of law, the British could present a fairly coherent troubled childhood defense.
"I admit it, yer honour, I were a bit of a bad lad, went off the rails a bit 'n all... but it all comes from when I were a wee lad, and the Romans, the Danes, the Germans, the French... they all had a piece o' me. Made me into the man I am today, but I swear yer honour I'm a changed man now, and won't you please go easy on me?".

Not a court in the land would convict them.

Nice fairy tale
After 500 witnesses were called of the horror inflicted
They would throw away the key
On a side note
90% of aboriginal atrocities were committed under English rule therefore maybe the aboriginals should sue them for compensation

China are the world's biggest buyer of US currency, although the US still has one major asset at it's disposal - the US is still the world's reserve currency for commodities (save for a few metals whose LME pricing sets their world standards, and iron ore which is normally set at close to the first annual FOB price Yuan/AUD).

Russia isn't exactly liquid - they do like to threaten to wield their gas price power to central Europe every winter but the truth is it would only ever be a Phyrric victory if they actually cut supplies as the Russians need Germany's euros as much as the German manufacturers need the energy supply.

There's a bloke just died in prison, sounds a lot like this.
Little bits of truth in the raving gives the impression of genius where there is none to be found. Fooled a lot of folks into thinking he was a guru though.

His name was Charlie.

Very poor troll thread. It seems inspired by anti-English racism. The examples he has quoted are after the British Empire ended. There is no balance either between good/bad that the British Empire did - and comparison with other empires.

Even after Brit rule finished most nations were keen to retain membership of the Commonwealth. Some countries that were not even constitutionally linked to the UK, such as Rwanda and Mozambique, have joined. You could argue it's a much better arrangement than the EU. It's a voluntary international organisation in which autonomous countries with diverse social, political, and economic backgrounds are regarded as equal in status, and cooperate within a framework of common values and goals that promotes common values such as the promotion of democracy, human rights, good governance, the rule of law, individual liberty, egalitarianism, free trade, multilateralism, and world peace.

The EU is mainly a gravy train for second rate politicians and bureaucrats.

The British East India co. ruled for long time with local troops. As in any war, there were atrocities on both sides when conflict arose. Despite some terrible events in the past most modern Indians appreciate the benefits of speaking English, democracy, a justice system, the abolition of slavery, the abolition of the caste system.

And best of all they can go to Britain
How's that going

Respect your opinion
USA Britain ect no GOLD RESERVES, currency is based on speculation and not supported
Russia , china ect have 3 times minimum their debt
Germany's still paying reparations as an example as well

I would have thought throwing away the key would have been the side note.

While you're suing for compensation, though, I hope you can throw in a word for me too.
Bloody Romans took care of my lot, wouldn't mind a nice little bit of land in Somerset if you can swing it. Oh, and an apology.
If I'm going to be greedy, though, I'll take a chunk of dirt in Lincolnshire and a dab of farming land in Essex, courtesy of the Danes and the French respectively.
Oh, and if you want to take it all the way, a bit in Surrey, Essex and Dorcet. Charge the Germans and the Vikings for those.

I only need the one apology though, can't do much with those.

Don't know "how often" "they" turn out to be right, but a little coherent opposition is always good, keeps people on their toes and questioning things. Got nothing against hippies in general. The ones in trees are fine, it's the ones out of their trees you need to be careful of.

You know, the raving loons, chemically enhanced or otherwise.

Speaking of which, Manson is a Scottish name, probably derived from a Scandinavian version prior to that. English via migration.
Damned Scots, been invading England and forcing their names on us for centuries, man.

Funny but climate change isn't going away
Wonder if the mansons were part of that wonderful empire building in Ireland under that great butcher Cromwell

Australia had second highest gdp per head in the 50s IIRC as a largely agrarian society.

Relying on agricultural products as an export is not the same thing as an agrarian society. Australia has always been a highly urbanised country due to being settled in the industrial era.

Yes, although the population was still predominantly urban (not to the modern day extent) and the economic outlook at the time was quite different to today given the post-war boom and huge nation building projects started in the late 40s (e.g. Snowy Hydro).
There was also an enormous immigration influx that brought capital and productive capacity into the country.

In Ireland:

1554-1609 - the plantations (Laois/Offaly, Munster & Ulster), where native Gaelic Catholics were ethnically cleansed and replaced by Protestant settlers from Scotland and England. The plantation of Ulster was the root of the current and historic troubles in NI.

1649 - 1661 - Cromwell's invasion of Ireland, nearly half a million died of famine after a concerted campaign to kill the country's livestock (Gaelic Ireland was a pastoral society), mass dispossession of land in all counties and provinces, soldiers and clergy who served the Confederate forces (a royalist Irish entity which was essentially independent from 1641 in all but name) rounded up and exiled or deported as indentured servants to the Caribbean.

17th Century - the Gaelic lordships were gradually dispossessed, resulting in lasting damage to Gaelic culture. Much like other medieval aristocracy they supported the cultural elite of Gaelic Ireland, the poets, judges and academics who were shut out and whose knowledge was lost. This played a key role in the later demise of the Irish language, reducing its prestige and rendering it vulnerable to demographic shock among its key speakers, the poorest farmers and landless labourers of the western seaboard.

1688-1691 - the Williamite Wars of British succession fought in Ireland, Irish Catholics sided with James, when the war was lost after the battle of Aughrim they were promised religious freedoms under the Treaty of Limerick. These were reneged upon and Catholics were denied all civil rights, forced to pay tithes to the established Church of Ireland and if they owned land it had to be divided equally between all sons on death, which had the effect of reducing much of the population to paupership and beginning the country's dietary dependence upon potatoes, the only crop that could provide a suitable return on the small holdings that were the norm for Catholics.

1740-1741 Year of the Slaughter, 38% of the Irish population die in a severe famine, grain exports continue to Britain despite the mass casualties.

1798 An alliance of Irish Catholics and Presbyterians supported by Napoleons forces rise in rebellion against British rule. The rebellion is crushed, with upwards of 100,000 killed in a frenzy of retribution by Crown forces. The devolved parliament is bribed and coerced into voting for the Act of Union between Britain and Ireland, making the country officially part of the UK.

1845-1851 An Gorta Mór, the great famine. Approx. 2 million die of starvation and a further 2 million emigrate. Despite the starvation cattle and grain continue to be exported from Ireland, with the military engaged to provide escort for the food wagons and herds as they're take to the docks. Massive cultural damage is caused on top of the human tragedy, the vast majority of the affected are Irish speakers from Western seaboard counties, their numbers suffer a precipitous collapse and the language begins its death spiral.

1886 In a bid to secure political points at the expense of the Liberal Party, Randolph Churchill (Winstons father) cultivates sectarian and Unionist votes in Ulster. This leads to the revival of the Orange Order.

1911-1914 Irish voters hold the balance of power in Westminster through their Home Rule Party, who agitate for a form of devolution. The House of Lords blocks passage of a Home Rule bill by the Commons for three years, while the Conservative party support the UVF, an illegal militia, to rearm and threaten military action against any Home Rule government. The British military in Ireland refuses to take action against the importation of arms by the UVF, threatening to remain in barracks if ordered to disarm them. Irish nationalists form the Irish Volunteers in response to the UVF, their small time efforts to import arms are met with the full force of the law, with civilians shot dead by troops in Dublin frustrated at their inability to intercept a shipment.

1916 At Easter 1916, a small group of nationalists launch a rebellion in Dublin, proclaiming the Irish Republic and occupying the city centre. Rising was crushed and the leaders were executed. This lead to a groundswell of sympathy and support for Sinn Fein, who weren't involved in planning the Rising but were it's primary beneficiaries.

1919-1921 Despite a 75% vote for independence from the UK, Irish MPs for Sinn Fein are rounded up and gaoled ones the Defence Of the Realm Act. Irish republicans engage in guerrilla warfare against Crown forces, with atrocities committed against civilians by the Black & Tans, a British auxiliary police force. In Ulster the UVF is armed and dragooned into action against the Catholic community, killing hundreds and expelling tens of thousands from the province. After Bloody Sunday the British government realise Ireland is becoming ungovernable and declare a truce with the leadership of the IRA, leading to a peace treaty. Partition is enshrined in this Treaty, leading to a civil war in Ireland between pro and anti Treaty forces.

A long sorry history and that's before we even talk about the current issues with Brexit or the Troubles. Cultural genocide and slaughter without being over dramatic.

Edward I invading and conquering Wales in 1282.

Edward I invading Scotland in 1296 and taking Berwick in a particularly bloody attack where at least 4,000 people were massacred.

Edward III invading France in July 1346 with 15,000 men, after claiming the throne of France in 1337 and then burning and pillaging their way across northern France.

The massacre of 300 civilians at Limoges in France by English - Gascon troops at Limoges in 1370.

And what about Ethelred II's massacre of all Danes living in England on St Brice's Day in 1002.

English troops massacred Spanish and Italian invasion forces at Dun an Oir in West Kerry, Ireland in 1579. At least 600 were killed.

And then there's the Mystic massacre in 1637 in Connecticut when English settlers killed 700 Indians, including women, children, and elderly.

And what about Boudicca's massacre of between seventy and eighty thousand people in AD60?

Where does it end?

All since 1066. We were cool until William the bastard invaded. So you guys should be highlighting Norman atrocities

I don't think Boudicca and Ethelred's massacre were since 1066.

Maybe I should have added the 'Harrying of the North' by the King of England in 1069-1070, where perhaps up to 100,000 people were slaughtered or died of starvation. Does that count?

That was all William the bastard?

Ironically he commissioned the ‘domesday book’ which gives us clear evidence today of the atrocities
