Where’s he at?

I do not rate him as good as Carey.

Carey was more athletic and mobile. In the air with a pack mark, Kernahan probably the best in that area.
There was a little bit of Sticks in Nick Riewoldt marking ability. He ran around a lot more than Sticks

Before my time they talk about Royce Hart as the greatest centre half forward.
I'd say Sticks about 3rd best ever.
Then take your pick of Brereton, Jonathon Brown and Nick Roo.
Paul Van der haar of Essedon up there too. Maybe not the goal kicking beast some others could be but great to watch. Tredrea, Chris Grant and Pavlich also very good too.
I think there is more distance between Carey at 1 and no 2 than there is from 3rd best to 10th best. Throw a blanket over them but Carey as much as some things about him put many off, was a truly brilliant centre half forward.

If David Schwarz had not done his knees a million times, I reckon he might have been as good as Carey.

Sticks was injury free for longer, and played latter in life than Dermott.

But Dermott was a true CHF. Often injured, playing injured, suspended.

Dermott played in 7 GF in a row but Sticks always played more games each of those seasons.

Dermott decided multiple finals series. Sticks didn't.

Dermott was sheparding, tackling and ending long leads in the centre and on the wing. Sticks was Carlton number one target at FF. Yet their goal diff is minimal and so many of Derm's goals were in finals.

Dermott was an enforcer and magnet for aggression. Sticks wasn't.

Will never understand anyone rating them side by side, let alone Sticks above.

I'm not saying Sticks was more influential in finals, but his goals record in finals is far better then Breretons. Sticks kicked 65 goals in 18 finals and Brereton kicked 53 goals in 26 finals.

That is a good record for Sticks.

8 of those 26 finals from Dermott were GFs, which makes the left over 18 finals odd, that's almost 1 GF out of every 3 finals

Kernahan was just behind Carey. Was about the same as Franklin due to his consistency. Franklin is the most explosive of the lot on his day. Another who never gets mentioned but was great was Tempelton. Won the Brownlow at CHF, and not many do that. Bernie Quinlan kicked over 100 goals for a season, mainly as a mobile CHF/FF, and was the almost the best of the lot. Beautiful footballer.

Missed Brereton out - he's ahead of Buddy, Riewoldt and Tredrea - don't let stats blind you on this. (I do see you're an Essendon fan, so maybe you can't bring yourself to utter his name!)

Yes, if we were basing this on best 80s haircuts but no re player performance

“For mine”
Chris Grant & Tredrae would have to be in the discussion too

Hawthorn Dermie: 189 games, 427 goals (2.3/game), first 11 years of his career.
Kernahan at Carlton: 251 games, 738 goals (2.9/game), 12 years.

25% more goals per game over more games is a significant difference.

Sticks played in 4 GFs out of 18 finals. 18 goals in those GFs. Not too shabby.

Yeah of course, because as an Essendon fan I'm going to love the other blokes I've listed from much loved clubs like Carlton, North, Hawthorn and Port... The question was the last 30 years, so Brereton's career was half over by the starting point and he sullied it with an awful back at Hawthorn and the horrible stints at Sydney and Collingwood. Plus I simply rate the other blokes higher and saw them do far more damage both against my club and in general, but whatever helps you sleep at night.

Yeah
Brereton contributed at least his share to the Hawks success. Few players will be lucky enough to be part of the great Hawks sides of that era. Many will play for clubs less successful than Carlton as well.

That is a good point, well demonstrated.

I think the rebuttal, and overarching matter of importance, is that Sticks was the main full forward target. He didn't have foot skills, even his dominant foot was weak, and was not a CHF delivering the ball to the FF.

Demott was exactly that... a CHF, with exquisite left and right feet delivering lace out into the forward 50.

Mentioning that Dermott also started at a younger age than Sticks, as a teenager compared to Sticks at age 23 odd, and that he also battled career ending injuries by age 25, are both diffferent arguments only relevant when comparing Dermie with other actual CHFs.

Sticks was a good player, great finals record, just pips me a bit when he is compared to Dermott as CHF.

to be honest, i always thought Stewart Loewe’s ceiling was much higher even if he was significantly less consistent.

also played in a worse team and was moved around more to fill needs: CHF, CHB, RUCK

I think his bad kicking in the front half of his career takes away from how good he really was

Chris Grant & Tredrae would have to be in the discussion too

Chris Grant is underrated. He had amazing years and played around the ground including FF, CHF, ruck and CHB.

Amazing!

Started younger in the VFL/AFL. In the SANFL, which was a pretty good league back then, Sticks played mostly at CHF and kicked a further 290 goals from 136 games. Dermie was definitely more a traditional CHF over his career, but Sticks was also an actual CHF for a good portion too. Plenty of other CHF’s played between both KPF posts. Don’t be miffed that people rate Sticks better. I reckon he was definitely better than Dermie. Most media guys who saw a lot of them both put Sticks higher in their best of lists too. It’s not like it’s some obscure opinion.

Like Melbourne.......:)
Interesting how that impacted the perception of Flower. He is still rembered as a great. I think you've got to be careful about including team achievements in a players achievments. By the time Flower played finals it was ptetty much it for him.
How a player stands up under the pressure of finals is valid though, it's complicated.
