MFC Fans Only 2017/2018 Summer sports talk

Schmuttt is right. It's all a bit lacklustre at the moment in terms of watching stars. Smith is a gun obviously, but in the absence of him the Australian team would be decidedly meh at present.
What, you not excited by Shaun Marsh?

Englands problem is whilst their bowling is probably equal to our batting, their batting is miles behind our bowling attack in terms of quality. They've got some seriously average players in there aside from Root, even Cook looks past it tbh.

Hats off to marsh , his innings set the win up . I grew up around the time of Lillee and tommo , the chappels , got thrown out of the Boxing Day test for avoiding a punch , good times . Anyway England are really missing stokes and cook is cooked.Smith can thank his bowlers for the win , but we have issues with our batting that we will probably get away with because England's batting is worse .Can't see us losing the series from here

Mitchell Marsh is in the squad. I know he scored a hundred for WA but surely it takes more than one good innings to make the side? Especially since his test career has been very underwhelming so far. Maxwell was on the cusp of selection for the first test & since then has scored a mountain of runs. Can't understand why he isn't next cab of the rank if they are going to drop Handscomb.
I understand they would like a 5th bowler but they might as well pick a specialist bowler & bat Paine at 6 instead of picking Marsh. I know it makes the tail long but Marsh isn't good enough to bat in the top 6 (Test Avg 21) & not good enough to be picked as a specialist bowler. (Test Avg 37)

I was reading that the average score at the WACA this year is about 400 odd because of how flat it's been. Apparently it's the worst one ever which is a shame that the last game ever played there will be a shadow of the pitch it once was

If your last name is Marsh, it takes much, much less than that.

Perhaps because their unrelenting faith in Shaun Marsh finally paid off last test, they want to go for the quinella.

True!

Although, I have always liked Shaun Marsh and feel he wasn't the worst choice of the 'interesting' selections.
I don't just say it in hindsight after he's played reasonably well in the first 2 tests but for everyone saying he's having his 9th crack at it - that's because he was often injured, not through lack of form.
Is a beautiful bat, just battles to keep his body right.
Mitch Marsh on the other hand is an average bat and an average bowler - the 2 together don't make him a good option, it's laughable.

Injuries have played a part ... but they arent the full story, he's also failed regularly, made more frustrating by the fact that his talent is plain to see, as evidenced by the last few tests. Hopefully he continues his form, and doesn't break his body.

Definitely a better selection that Mitch ... how many mediocre games do we have to suffer through before the selectors give up on him. He's the cricketing version of JKH, very good player in the second tier, but too far out of his depth at the top level.

Not sure why everyone is so surprised at the Mitch marsh selection

Mark Waugh said after the Gabba test ideally we need a medium pace all rounder to ease the workload of the 3 quicks.

Rightly or wrongly he has been picked and will probably play, I don’t see any other medium-fast all rounders doing more than marsh atm.

Maybe Maxy should bowl seamers along with his offies Colin miller style :p

I don't see why we need a mediocre medium paced 5th bowler for any test in Australia right now. Sydney you might go an extra if you want two specialist spinners. But really unless we are playing a very good team, it seems unnecessary. First two tests I didn't see anyone getting tired. He would weaken the batting, which I think is more important at the moment.

When things are going well, we don't need the extra bowler, but surely the Poms will actually knuckle down and put a score on at some stage. We barely have a part timer in the team. If we have an injury or a long day in the field, it'll be tough to come back from due to the workload the quicks will have to carry.

Not sure Marsh is the answer, but we should be trying to fit someone in. Surprised Handscomb is the one but he has been nigh on terrible this series. Shame too as he's a very useful fielder and looked the goods when he first came in.

Edit: Also, ropes at North Sydney Oval... because it wasn't already small enough?

In this day and age there is a need to manage the amount of overs our bowlers deliver. There is no way the current 3 quicks will play all 5 test without the help of an all rounder or one of them missing a test. We’ve been lucky England haven’t made a big score and batted for long time.

The waca is a flat deck almost like the old Adelaide pitch without the turn. Marsh will 100% play this next test. He can bowl 8-12 overs which would me the 3 quicks are bowling 4-5 over less per innings.

I don’t agree with it but in this day and age with player management, the need is there.

Exactly, the other option is needed to manage work loads, but its just the fact that its Mitch Marsh ... again.

Meanwhile, the ropes are partly a safety thing, so no one goes sliding into the fence, but also makes the womens game a bit more enjoyable ... job done you'd say too, the 6'ers innings last night was brilliant, 4/242 is an excellent T20 innings in anyone's book, with 114 off 52 from one girl, and 91n.o off 49 from the future Ex-Mrs Count - Ellyse Perry

Dunno, they had the ropes in a fair way - looked like 10 to 15 metres in a few spots. I love North Sydney Oval as a venue; used to go watch the state one-dayers there when they were on but its like shelling peas for batsmen given the flat deck, lightning outfield and short boundaries. If there have to be ropes there, it should be a metre out from the fence tops.

I only watched for 10 minutes and while the doinking was mildly amusing, the standard was awful. There was a "spinner" bowling hand grenades at 70 kph not turning them and some trundler bowling right arm round into the pads at 100 kph from the other end. Not exactly an enthralling contest between bat and ball...

What does the current Mrs Count say about this?

They’ve had the ropes as boundaries as opposed to the fence for 20 years, ever since Ponting broke/wrecked his ankle I think in early 2000s.

But they did have the boundaries in further yesterday than say a men’s game. If the men had played with those boundaries they would nudge 300. I don’t watch much of the women’s big bash but I’ve watched more this weekend than I have ever before.

They need bigger scores to make it more watchable, I won’t sit there and watch a side struggle to get up to 130 of 20 overs with 2s and 3s.
