He only moved forward somewhat recently, which shows, because he's not a natural forward at all
 
Watson carries on the number 26 tradition as our back pocket specialist. He can work his way through traffic which will help us break the forward press other teams impose on us/improve our transition out of the backline. He is a much better choice in this role compared to Nelson. Has a better tank and is more agile. I think Nelson has a future, but not ahead of Watson.

I like the idea of Shep playing the third tall role. He can come in as the third up in marking situations similar to Yeo/Easton Wood and gives us much more drive out of defence compared to Makenzie/Barrass. The only exception to this might be against GWS if they play Patton, Lobb and Cameron all in the forward line together (although they seem to prefer Lobb as a solo ruckman now)
 
Not easy to settle on some positions in the team which is why I've picked multiple players. I'll preface it by saying I haven't got to any open sessions yet but plan to attend one soon enough. Happy to take on board any feedback.

Going to start with LeCras. His the incumbent forward who almost sticks like mud in their. When his on and kicking bags it's greta to watch and his selection is justified, still one of our better set shot kicks for goal as well but from what I've head MagicKarp is having a strong pre season and I think has built up a good enough body of work to prove his worth at selection. Would bring added pace and pressure inside 50. If Karpany doesn't replace LeCras due to seniority much in 2018 I think it will by 2019.

Ah Chee should get a good crack at it early. Does depend on how he goes through the JLT but is the style of mid we need to still be competitive towards September.

Hutch although not the most blessed with disposal is still a valuable team man I think.

Jetta I'd like to see used off half back a bit more like he did in the last quarter and extra time against Port. Granted Port were slow to pick up on it but his run and carry off the square and deep kicks inside 50 where crucial and something we've been waiting to see regularly from Jetta since 2016.


FWD half is pretty straight forward for me. Ryan comes straight in even if I can still see question marks on his defensive side because offensively he brings that spark we need.


MIDS and RUCK duo of Naitanui and Vardy pick themselves especially early. As a second ruck and given Lycett missed a large chunk of 2017 I'd prefer Vardy right now. Always thought Lycett was a bit of a dinosaur inside 50 when it comes to pressure.

Offensively his great because his a tough match up but defensively clubs can pick him off with a rebounding defender.


BACK half poses some questions. Although one is 6'2 and the other is 6'5 Cole and Schofield have similar traits in athelticism. He might be taller but the closing speed and run of Schoey can't be underestimated and is a reason why he can play on taller and smaller opponents.

I'd like to see Cole get some opportunities as a genuine small defender as well but. Test him against some quality small forwards but again the experience of Schofield is tempting.

Mackenzie over Barrass wasn't easy to do but in the same way was necessary. Experience of Mackzenzie is vital on the last line. Yeh Dixon kicked a bag against us in the EF but the smartness and game sense of Ezy late took it into extra time. Was only one instance over a 130 minute game but under pressure instead of rushing a behind he copped a good whack from Dixon into the behind post just to get a throw in and neutralize the contest.

My biggest gripe with TB is his inability to hold his ground when isolated, if people can prove me wrong on that I'm happy to be proven wrong but I;ve seen it alot. Offensively I have no qualms, terrific intercept mark and saves multiple forward forays for the opposition but Gov does that better.

Until TB can get a better hold of his body positioning and build that core strength to wrestle with the beasts he is better served working on that part of his game at EP than getting rag dolled out of the way.


 
For what it is worth I know someone involved in the fitness team at West Coast. He said Sheed and Hutchings have improved a heap since last year. With no Mitchell or Pridas they could be most improved playing their natural in and under mid role. Cole, Vennebles and Rioli also looking good.

Pretty much the team I'd pick also :thumbsu:

Shep/Hurn as third talls gives us more run, Yeo/Duggan can rotate between wing and HBF, more dangerous forward line than 2017s. Good mix of youth and experience also.

Hutchings looks in very good nick. Hearing he is setting PB's in the 2km etc...I think he has a role to play and is pretty much a B22 lock if any of Shuey, Redden or Sheed go down. He is very important to our list structure even if he isn't an "A-grader' as such - strong body, knows the gameplan, one of our most likely mids to snag a goal resting forward. He's a solid player.

Always nice to get an outside set of eyes across things. Naita is just never ever going to be able to ruck a game solo so while I love the faster look I think we are a tall short...and that tall has to be able to ruck 30-35% of the game minimum.
 
Mutimer has become a bit of a forgotten man since his stint in the team. While I don't particularly see a big future for him (AFL applicable talent?) I can see him performing strongly enough in the WAFL as a midfielder to warrant a few games.

Rotham was pretty average in WAFL seniors last year and is probably a couple of years away.

As stated above Naitanui won’t be rucking solo.

I think Parto is ahead of him and i don't think we will be giving away games on the Hff this year.
 
I think it's early to write Mutimer off.

He looks in really good nick physically - like he has got a better balance between size and running capacity. He will have to do the work at WAFL level to force his way in but he showed the capacity to do this last year with a pretty blistering start to the year despite EP woes. The first 5 matches of 2017 he averaged 25.6 disposals and 5.6 tackles per game and bobbed up with a few goals.

Mutimer (obviously still developing) looks like he is nested in the Redden/Sheed/Hutchings type of role of where so he isn't really that far away from being considered if we have an injury or the coaching staff take a harder line on form. What could count against him is at AFL level the staff may see him, at this stage, competing more with the Cripps/Lecca/Ryan(?) group of forward who can offer a rotation through the middle.

Hopefully with the list in "transition" Kurt will get good time on the ball if he gets the nod.
