I love how this thread was disguised as a genuine interest in who the strongest player in the AFL was.

When in reality the title should be: Jack Viney is the strongest player in the AFL.
The inference in the OP was indeed that Viney was the strongest pound for pound player in the AFL. There was no skirting around it.

At least Bugg doesn't hit people in the back of the head, so no, different mould. I am not disputing him as a player, stop falling back on the obvious, but he is a premiership winning coward regardless of how good a footballer he is. You just can't admit it. Imagine if someone did that to All-Australian captain Rance?

Strength means squat in AFL if it isn't core power. Gary Ablett Senior was like a jaguar, his son one of the best breakaway power since. Dusty can't be moved once he plants himself, Pepper Power is interesting to watch. Mickey Martin was strong and knew how to use it, and Plugger was awesome.

Years ago Paul Licuria was talking about posture, strength and training, obviously things would have changed but they focused on explosive pushing actions, breaking a tackle, jumping for a mark that sort of thing.

Chest stronger than back, hunched shoulders an issue etc.

Bench strength doesn't directly translate to the ability standing up to exert force horizontally but if you can't push 100kgs on your back you can't push 100kgs upright.

Hip strength used to be big for breaking tackles before they taught wrapping the arms,.

Core strength has a lot of applications whether it be lifting or playing sports. It's all about being able to transfer the energy. Depending on what you are doing your core decides how much energy you can transfer, that doesn't mean your arms, legs, chest or back don't need to be strong just that the weakest link in the chain is the limiting factor in what you can do.

Years ago in the NFL when Drew Brees got shipped off to the Saints with a shoulder injury during his rehab he spent a ton of time building up his core strength, helped him throw and avoid tackles and made him a better QB.

These guys don't train to win lifting comps, they train to improve their performance on field.

Sports science is evolving and day to day training is pretty crazy but things like squat, deads and bench are still a way to build and track improvement, not to mention locker room bragging rights

Punching someone in the back of the head? It's a dog act. It's as low as punching a child in the face.
Nah, Watts was on the ground when Rance hit him. Rance is a dog and a coward after doing that. You do that to someone in the street and you're in jail.

The AFL should of hit Rance harder with the penalty.

Hitting a guy thats on the ground an not even facing you? That doesnt look great for the game.
I found it to be insulting to any victims of a stray cowards punch.
