Just looking for some info on this Cup, played for when Collingwood and Hawthorn meet in the home & away season.

Namely -

What year did it start?
Is it always for the first meeting of the two sides each year?
Is it still current?

Appreciate any info, cheers

Off topic slightly, but I love how Essendon v Footscray games are played for the EJ Whitten cup. Essendon just ran with it & didn't push for a Whitten/Reynolds or Whitten/Coleman etc cup.

Apparently started in 2001, but not sure it made it to second year.
Only ref in the AFL Record is shown in Round 2 programme, 2001 here on page 74

There's a wonderful amount of information on this page about various football awards of this type, but unfortunately it looks like they're still working on this particular award:- http://www.hardballget.net/afl-inter-club-awards.html

Kennedy-McHale Cup Collingwood-Hawthorn tbd

KENNEDY-McHALE CUP
Awarded to the winner of premiership matches between Collingwood and Hawthorn. The cup honours two coaching legends; John Kennedy senior played 164 games for Hawthorn (1950-59) then coached Hawthorn and North Melbourne for 412 games, including VFL-AFL premierships in 1961, 1971 and 1976. Jock McHale played 261 games for Collingwood (1903-20) and coached the Magpies in 714 games (1912-49), which stood as the VFL-AFL record until Mick Malthouse surpassed this total in season 2015. McHale was involved in nine Collingwood premierships: one as a player, one as a playing-coach, and seven as coach.

Yep, I got a lot of info off that site, but as you say, they haven't got much on this award.

Is there a way to search across all the online AFL Records?
http://digital.slv.vic.gov.au/R

If you go here ^ (or just where it says "Back to search" on the home page for the Record [ http://digital.slv.vic.gov.au/R/?func=collections&collection_id=1081 ]), select Football Record from the drop-down-box, put the dot in Exact then type in e.g. "Kennedy-McHale" it will bring up just that 2001 issue. If you then click on View it will take you to the page where "Kennedy-McHale" is mentioned.

Thanks stemline for bringing this to our attention and 35Daicos cheers for posting that search method of the SLV digital Footy Record collection. It's cost me the past 7 hours digging up a bunch of new info... but I loved every minute of it!

2001 has now been added as the start date for the Kennedy-McHale Cup: http://www.hardballget.net/afl-inter-club-awards.html

Other new info now added:

Alan Schwab Shield - start date amended from 1993 to 1994
Col Austen Trophy - reasons for the award being inaugurated added to the description section
Dyer-Richards Trophy - missing start date (1999) added
Peter Crimmins Trophy - exact start date (1977) added plus further info about the award
Polly Farmer Trophy - missing start date (1996) added
T.M.Ferguson trophy - exact start date (1953) added

There are still a few awards with current status TBC (e.g. Brent Crosswell Medal, Prime Minister's Cup), Gibbsy and I will update these when the info is uncovered.

Cheers,
Easty

Ok, an update -

With thanks to CFC Archives, the physical Cup itself has been engraved 3 times, as follows:

Hawthorn June 2000
Hawthorn March 2001
Collingwood April 2002

It may have been played for after that and not engraved.

A further clue might be that the Cup was sponsored by Crazy John's, who was also a sponsor of both Clubs. If anyone can find out when Crazy John's sponsorship of CFC and HFC ended, that would likely be the end date for that Cup.

Having finally had a chance to check back through the Hawk Talk Year Books, Crazy John's ceased being a sponsor of Hawthorn at the end of 2003. As far as I can tell from various internet searches, Collingwood's sponsorship by CJ's finished then also. I think it's safe to say this cup existed from round 16 2000 to round 12 2003.

Apologies for not replying sooner, I've rarely been online over the past couple of months. Many thanks for your continued detective work on this, it's much appreciated!

Following your efforts I've done some further digging as well. Although Crazy John's continued to be a Collingwood matchday sponsor in 2004 (see the Round 22 edition of the Football Record below which had a special cover Collingwood's game that round) I've not been able to find any other references to the award itself post-2003.

Based on that and your research I'm going to call 2002 the most-likely end date for the Kennedy-McHale Cup (with 2003 also noted as a possibility). The Interclub awards section of www.hardballget.net has now been updated and at the end of that article I've acknowledged your research as well:

Thanks again ;)
