Thanks. Definitely agree with this. We’ve developed a return to work plan with his medical specialist, starting part time, working from home and building up as he’s able. I’m doing my best to reinforce that there is no pressure from my side to get back to work. The most important thing is his health.

I like your sentiment Darko, but TT is right. We’re in a very commercially oriented part of a very commercially oriented business and in a competitive market. The reality of our job is that we need to continue delivering week in, week out. We’ve spoken several times about whether this is the right type of environment for him and he has consistently says he enjoys it. He says work can be hard some times, but it’s not really the thing triggering him. I’ve offered to support him in finding a less demanding role in the company, but he says he wants to stay where he is. I don’t want to push too hard, as I would hate to inadvertently give him any reason to fear I might want him gone given his health.

Personally, I also think having something to deliver will help provide a sense of purpose and something to celebrate when he delivers. I guess the answer is in the middle somewhere....i’ll just have to use a very light touch when it comes to setting expectations and responding to performance.

Thanks Grogg and everyone for your thoughts and resources. It’s a tough one to get exactly right, so I’m grateful for your support.

I assure you i’ll give it my best!
You sound like a great boss.

That attitude seems rare these days.

In my business (public service) and in the current environment, when cracks appear, management seem to increase the pressure.

They don't want to pay redundancies, so they make people want to quit. Has led to some messed up employees.

That’s disgraceful behaviour. It’s unethical and lacks common decency. It’s also quite stupid since the opportunity cost of forcing someone out and the impact on the organisation’s culture probably exceeds the redundancy cost anyway.

Most of us aren’t saving lives for a living. Giving a little bit of leeway to support a fellow human should not be that hard.

I feel you sbdan.

The place I had so many issues at had 150 employees in my area when I started there, by the time I finished there were 67 because they just kept pressuring and pressuring until the cracks in people shattered.

So many cases of Workers comp and mental health leave that transitioned into full resignation.

Similar to the poster above, I was a healthy 90kg and 6 foot tall, ballooned up to 110kg through the stress at work, that in itself changed my life.

Yep, that's what is going on at my job. We've about halved the staffing levels and the ones that are left are disillusioned to say the least.

Can't let it get on top of you though. I'm going for new jobs in 2018, if only to prove to myself that I'm in control of my situation.

I do know one strategy for stress and that is one hour of medium paced excercise a day. Finding the time is the hardest issue. It mostly means getting up early...which causes other issues like tiredness.

Or going to bed very very late. :stern look with squinty eyes

Don't be so soft. If I can jump on BF at 3:30am then anyone can jump on the treadmill at 4am. /sarcasm

10 to 20 mins of exercise is enough to freshen your mind. Don't be caught up in 30-60 mins. To stimulate your hormones, 10-20 mins is more than enough.

Meditation also helpful which no doubt has been suggested in here before. Though I do not myself as my mind wonders a lot and I am quite impatient but maybe quite help for others.

Fantastic to hear KT. Honestly the hardest step.

As an update regarding my sleep stuff: Guy who ran my sleep study said he witnessed Medium to High levels of interrupted sleep and reckons they'll end up putting me on CPAP therapy. Said theres no wonder I feel terrible mentally a lot and hopes that it will go some way to helping me start to feel more motivated, which in turn means I'll be able to exercise more, which will also make me feel better.
If anyone finds they wake up a lot, or wake up with dry mouth/their partners tell them they snore, speak to your doctor, it can be a sign of something worse. Sleep Apnea can cause strokes, depression, lethargy, you name it.

I have chronic Sleep Aponea, and I generally get around in a haze, I am looking at a surgical remedy.

Have they tried you on CPAP?

It really is debilitating.

I can literally sleep 14 hrs and feel like I've only slept 20m.

I need to have a surgical consult at some point for a deviated septum which may be contributing to it, but who knows when that will happen

That's what I'm worried about. I sleep weird. Technician even had to use a different mask when I was doing the study
