We will be just in or just out - good enough if we have a good injury run and manage to pinch a couple, on the flip side, not strong enough to be considered a certainty.

20 + games into Paddy, Steele, Gresh, Acres, Billings and Webster. 5-15 games for Coffield, Hunter, Long, Goddard, Marshall, Battle.

Still a very young list - not one player with 200 games experience, and only one player over the age of 30.

I feel it's going to be one of those years were we have some fun times and some melt times. You would think the expectations would be higher than the poll suggests. If we're lucky we could snag 13 wins. If previous years gone by is an indication, we might only win 9 or 10. It depends if our players want to just play their 'role' or want to lift their standards and become something more, like Roberton and Ross were last year.

i was planning a good bet on us making the 4 , but when i checked out the odds we are $6.50 - i thought i could get 10/1
Premium.......was also thinking of a bet.....very surprised the odds of making the 4 aren't greater than 10/1.

After a public holiday in Perth today and enjoying the beach and the river with our dog I am in a buoyant mood at the moment. My optimism has come to the fore and I think we will definitely make the 8 this year, mainly due to the opportunity for a few of our list to emerge, due to their age demographic and their experience reaching a threshold. If we can get 4 or 5 to make quantum improvements in their game then a spot in the 8 is very feasible, if not most likely. Acres, McCartin, Dunstan, Steele, Billings are some that might be able to improve their output and drag us collectively higher. As well at last we have some degree of depth on our list, which will make spots for a game very competitive, which is a good thing in a team sport.

Also I don't agree with the Richo bashing, it is much along the same lines as those wanting to tear strips off Hardwick before last season. I like the softly softly approach to coaching and teaching young men to be their best that our coach employs. A lot of our list have only known Richo as their coach, and continuity and familiarity is important in a lot of areas of life. If we crash and burn this year, then it is time to ask some serious questions. But I will wait till that happens before sentencing Richo to the gallows.

Too many inside mids and too tall up forward.....unless a breakout outside mid runner or 2 appears....no
Last year hamstring tendinitis took away Jack Steven's explosive speed, but he looks to have that back, and has had a full preseason, so with us now having all these inside options that you speak of, it ought to free Jack up to get back some of the run and carry he's lost in recent years- when we've needed him to do more of the in-and-under grunt work. That could help a bunch.

Interesting how it is set up this year IMO....just need a couple of line busters and all will be good I reckon. Just not sure who the Saints have to bust the lines

its looking good that armitage is back in shape and will be a big asset this year and with steven in the best shape he has been in for a while , with the emerging sinclair , ross performing we are already ahead of last year.
throw in macartin , billings , dunstan , gresham , steele and acres we will be more than in the 8.
our 3 marking targets in the forward line will catch many teams out with billings , gresham picking up the crumbs - hope they can fit in another highly skilled player down there as well like hunter would be perfect

Well Steven did it a lot more back in say his first B&F winning year (when Lenny Hayes was still here to do most of the inside stuff), so he can do it as well as most, if he's freed up to do it.

Our next best at it is probably Savage, who for the last 8 games last year (once he returned to the side) was ranked 4th in the comp for metres-gained (over that period). Need him to keep playing like that, or better and consistently for the year.

Newnes would be our next best (averages about 430+ metres gained), or Roberton, and Seb Ross has really added outside run to his game in the last couple of years. Then we'll be looking for Sinclair and Acres to really step up in this regard as well.

Ive said that i dont think we will but im ok with that. I dont unerstand all the negativity. Weve got a nice list thats growing and building every year. Our core 25-30 players are all under 25. I think everyones getting impatient because the dogs and tigers won the last 2 flags from no where. I think our list will b able to compete for a flag for a few years not just smash and grab one. Just needs time

This. We're building a strong list that bats deep and which ought to be able to contend for years once/if we add a "big fish" as the cherry-on-top in the next year or two (with the huge amount of cap space we have to play with).

No. Armitage's aggression is not enough. If that team you nominate hits the park it is way too stationary IMO. A gut runner, carrying the ball is needed..not a left foot or or right foot in an under extractor...who will run the ball?..as for all those talls..no chance all playing in the same team surely..IMO ..As a magpie supporter..give me a break here...you think you have problems?..lol

Everyone's talking up Melbourne's chances of making the 8 this year (with good reason, IMO), but who are their "midfield gut runners", who run and carry and break the lines and hit targets?
