Only thing that needs to change at St Kilda is the senior coach and his band of over paid under qualified assistant coaches gone! Particularly Sexton, Kingsley and the midfield coach (forget his name) they have all been at the club far too long and have overseen a period of insufficient improvement.

The question really is; who are we "guaranteed" to beat?..

Before knowing anything about the actual season and how we have improved and how other clubs have improved - the only ones going from pre-season outside observation would be:

North x 2
Gold Coast x 1
Freo x 1
Bris x 1
Carl x 1

6 wins.

And even though that's guaranteed, its not guaranteed.

Freo away game. We only just beat them last year and we were pushing for a finals berth.

Carlton? Have improved by the looks of things.

Even Gold Coast have beaten us 3 out of last 4 times at Metricon ( although vastly different side now ).

It'll come down to winning all of these. Hawthorn x 2 and Collingwood x 1

Then stepping up against the top 8 team contenders which we'll need another 3-4 wins from.

Looks daunting.

Im usually pretty bloody excited waiting for the footy season to start when it gets to this time of the year .
But i gotta admit I've can't remember the last time I was so 'Meh' about the start of another season .
Yeah Coffield and Clark look the goods but they need time to build up and get a tank.
Yeah Paddy's pre season looks promising and Billings could be elite by the end of this season. There is promise.
But until we get some more polish in our midfield I think it's just gonna pretty much be a tread water year.
We will win a few, lose a few and maybe still get flogged in a few. Just gonna be last season on repeat IMO.
Im still proud, passionate and paid up as always. But land another gun mid by waving our so called " war chest" money around and I think I will be much more excited about 2019.
It's a NO to finals in 2018 for me.
But I'll be absolutely wrapped if the club proves me wrong.

I think we would be in a better position if we had pumped more games into younger players over the last two years instead of persisting with mature players producing mediocre performances. As it sits we have a handful of quality players, a whole bunch of GOPs and a whole bunch of unknown quantities. That doesn't sound like the makeup of a finals side to me. I expect a finish between 10th-14th after an incosistent season. No doubt there will be moments where we look like world-beaters, but I don't think we have the experience, game plan or quality to play good footy through an entire season.

The Re-re-rebuild....we are still a young club blah blah blah, next year once we get a good midfielder from freo or gws blah blah blah...

But we need more than one player that can hit targets...

I don’t care where we finish, I just want the players to have skills and be able to hit targets better then kids in junior d grade footy teams.

I’d rather lose by getting the ball less, but being clean and skilful.

A try hard team that gets the ball a lot, but constantly makes mistakes and runs out of breath is hard to watch.

Every 3rd or 4th week we are completely buggered and get thumped,cos we are running flat out chasing the ball and also seemingly running flat out atanything else, players, even seagulls every week..

The other big mistake was not trying to get Dustin Martin 3 years ago when he wanted to go..

If we lose the first 4 or 5 games we need to sack Richo, the bulldogs won a grand final with a new coach, Richo has had his time.

I think it’s the free agents more than anything that got to me. Sold promises of landing game changing players - when in reality, it just doesn’t happen. They are a blue moon.

In 2 games of pre season I’m more than comfortable that Clark and Coffield are future elite players. It’s adding to this next years draft and the one after. Not just first rounders, but we simply have to get the latter picks right as well.

If we’re contending in 4yrs I’m happy with the extra wait. As long as we contend.

Same with me.. but I honestly don’t think this wave of players is getting us there. It has to be the one after. May even take longer than the 4 years.. I don’t think we have a 2nd next year do we? Traded it for this years basically.

Which is so disheartening to think about.. I’ve actually trained my brain to block out any thought that we might have to go through another rebuild before contending again.

I used to have a half laugh and think we at least are going to get an elite talent through the door with a draft pick. Now its just sad. Although I want Rankine so badly I’d give every draft pick we have for the next decade just so he’s on our list.

Its no where near it. The reason people say we have depth is because most players are of average standard.

I think we do have more depth than we have had in recent years, we have a dearth or star power.

Even Brisbane have more stars, that said they have been held down through injury to key players so are probably a middle table list. They have lost heaps of games to Dayne Beams who is an A grade talent, Allen Christensen who was a gun in Geelongs premiership year, Tom Bell an underrated bull, Mitch Robinson a strong competitor.

They also had Zorko, Martin and Rocky last year who are all star players. On top of that they have Hipwood, Harris andrews and Dan Mc Stay who look like they will end up elite talls, guys like Witherden, Berry, Mc Luggage and Rayner who look likely to be guns.
