Yep Melbourne's great, It's the best......
Best Bollards, to keep you alive as you walk down the street.
Best Sleeping spots, footpaths.....
Best place to experience an aggravated burglary.
Ice is cheap.
$1,000,000 to live in the shittiest suburbs.
45 degrees in summer, 5 degrees in winter.
Eddie McGuire.
Join a gang.
Can't swim in the bay.
Trams, 2 hours to get to Bundoora.
Hipsters.
Trains, punch yourself in the head before you get on, save the bogans doing it to you.
Beggars earn more than you.
The Yarra.
Docklands, where there are more mice and rats than people.

Ahhhh.
Melbourne.
Good call Kidd Vicious......

Yeah safety bollards are a major hassle. ?.

Crime is down, its a 45 minute drive to decent beaches. There is transport everywhere, ice is cheaper everywhere else and it's easy to book a restaraunt for a feed before heading to the dome.

I agree with your points.

Decent beaches, where?
Transport. More crime on trains and Trams than in the street.
Crime down? Laughable.
Restaurants are good though.

There are no words to describe what an absolute shithole Darwin is. Was hugely disappointed in it. Doesn't even have a KFC in it's CBD.

Melbourne is my favourite city to live in Australia, but you can't claim it has beaches. Certainly not in comparison to Sydney.

Google maps says it 1h20m to direct drive from Elsternwick to Portsea.

It also says 1h24m to do a scenic drive of Royal Botanic Gardens to Double Bay, Rose Bay, Parsley Bay Beach, Watson Bay, Bondi Beach, Coogee Beach, Maroubra Beach and Malabar Bay.

This contest would like early 90's Mike Tyson fighting against himself ten years later.

I loved my time living in St Kilda but the first time I laid eyes on the "beach" was one of the great disappointments of my life.

Love Melbourne but it's getting weird and slowly shitter I feel.

I mean how many *en burger joints do you need. They're burgers FFS.

Traffic considerably worse in the last ten or so years. Becoming a bit more cliquey as well. Used to love the inner North and Richmond, and Prahran areas. Starting to become infested with too many w***ers.

Still great for food, bars, events, art, sport. Just stop knocking down pubs and putting up apartment buildings

Haven't lived in Melbourne for 5 years (have visited multiple times in the interim, though not since 2016) so would be very disappointing if that is happening en masse. It's one of the biggest things that killed Sydney. Sydney was never the most "soulful" city but it had great beaches and enough pubs that the nightlife was good. Now Sydney is just a never ending sprawl of apartment blocks with the worst nightlife of any major western city I have been too.

Can't expect a tropical isolated Geelong to compete with any proper city in terms of facilities.

Gah....it’s going to look like Sydney soon... souless.
Need stronger heritage laws, bigger fines for those cretins like the assholes who knocked down the corkman.

Horses for courses.

I would go with;
Melbourne - however, lack of affordability will see it drop soon enough
Brisbane - nice city, good climate and close to a lot of great holiday destinations
Adelaide - underrated, affordable and nice suburban coastline, wineries north and south
Hobart - very picturesque town/surrounding areas, starting to develop a tourism industry.
Darwin - has a unique laid-back culture that appeals to me.
Sydney - perhaps the best city if you are a millionaire, unappealing in every way if you are not.
Perth - nice looking city but too isolated, I was there recently though and I think the new stadium will be good for the CBD
Canberra - dull, freezing and full of government servants looking only to further their careers and not to socialise.
government servants dont socialise? are you kidding? Canberra is the best place in australia for work colleagues to socialise. Probably cos most people in the public service come from out of town and its easy to organise social events as everyone lives within 15 mins of each other. No other place in australia has so many work events and sports teams as the government public service in australia.

if you think melbourne is a scary place you have lived an incredibly sheltered life. i have no problem walking around melbourne late at night and have done it often. never had a single incident. Never had anyone break into my home. this has happened to me when i breifly lived in perth and canberra however. The whole gang thing is incredibly overplayed for political reasons. stop falling for right wing propoganda. The house price thing is an issue but rent is as cheap as anywhere else.

Perhaps you should focus on the good things about cities rather then just compare them on negatives (real or imagined).

I'm not sure what the criteria is as far as rating the cities. I will rate it based on cities which I think I'd feel most comfortable living in. The only cities which I have actually visited/lived/been in are Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart and Canberra.

1. Melbourne
2. Adelaide
3. Hobart
4. Sydney
5. Canberra

Of the cities I haven't been too but based on the impression from looking from the outside.

1. Perth
2. Brisbane
3. Darwin

As a whole.

1. Melbourne
2. Adelaide
3. Hobart
4. Perth
5. Sydney
6. Canberra
7. Brisbane
8. Darwin

Yep. And not just on the national scale, but international too.
The day to day experience is getting worse though IMO.
