Upper Murray 2015

I agree with all the comments about the under 16’s. Especially that the administration has done Bugger all to support them. Seems like common sense to me. Looks like it’s going to go ahead and I hope it gets the support of the kids, parents, clubs and the community. Until the awjfl grows a brain this looks like our best option.

So fellas, some clearances starting to roll through the umfl website. What’s everyone’s predictions for the year ahead?
Old Kenny two sides that will be there are Bullioh Corryong leaning to feds an tumba just by going on clearances Tom Bennetts big lost to tumba but mate lets get the first 5 games out of the way then have another look. Hopefully the coaches at each club will promote the league alittle bit more this season. Regarding the u/16 comp they should be in the alb/wod league and should be wearing the upper murray inter league colours but if A/W haven't allowed them in because they are only fielding one grade that goes to show how backward they are and don't use traveling as an excuse

Agree on all of that chop. Think the blues are holding them back. Heard they were close to signing two brothers from Holbrook with family connections to the area that can play. Are any clubs playing pre season games? Come on fellas let's get some chat happening round here. We have the most even comp in the area and the clubs are ran the way they used to be in that it's more about the club than the individual.

G’day,
Got distracted trying to get a kick last year. Good to see you blokes keeping the thread going.

Here’s a bit of mail for you lot:

Bullioh
Word is there’s a Kiewa player making their way over. Kelvin Bailey played a few years back. Not sure if he’s still going around. Could be him, but with an influx of O&M players to their senior side it would be interesting to see who it is.

Cudgewa
Dave Low is on the top of their wish list.
They won’t get him though.

Corryong
Tangers has already registered apparently, so much for hanging them up after the flag!
Couple more from Barny on the way.
Grimes going round again too.

Federals
Haycraft got a new job working away a bit, don’t think he’ll play much.
Hales should play again.
Hopefully they rise up to the quality of the Bullioh and Corryong sides of 2017, would be great for the league.

Walwa
Their CHF has put about 10kg on his frame. Got picked in team of the year last year but didn’t really do much, if they can grab a couple of good mids they should be ok. Don’t think McCarthy will go anywhere.

Tumbarumba
Hard to see them being competitive, especially with no Bennetts. He’s in the top handful of players in the league.

Cheers lads.

Aaron Gordon may be the Kiewa player.
Clearance already lodged.
Paton from Mitta also heading to the Dogs.
Looks like they are going for the tall options this year

By my prediction earlier both McCarthy boys are on the move to the o&m really hope Walwa can find another guy who can get 50 touches and 5 goals games massive hole to fill
Looks like Corryong are recruiting straight from barny
Tumba hope to be on the improve with a handful from the RFL and FFL
Bullioh seems to be just topping up key spots
Early prediction is Corryong and Bullioh to be the benchmark then followed by feds tumba walwa and wooden spooners cudgewa

Just further on the Awjfl, why are some of the clubs allowed to have multiple teams in the same age group? I’ll tell you why. It’s so that is they can get more kids as 1 pointers if they end up being any good. This, combined with population decline in the upper Murray has stuffed the under 16’s comp up here and in the next couple of years it will stuff the whole show.

This is actually incorrect Old Kenny. AWJFL clubs have had multiple teams in the same age group for years. Well before any mention of league equalisation and points systems.

In saying that was it ever an option for say Wodonga to field a second team in the under 16’s which has an affiliation with the Upper Murray? Basically being predominantly made up of upper Murray kids and a few top ups from Wodonga. maybe playing 3-4 games at bullioh a year for example.

They way they are using them has changed though relton. In the past they played with two teams if the had surplus kids of their own. Now it’s topping up with our kids and no doubt kids from surrounding leagues clubs. Why can’t they have agreements with tdfl or Hume clubs to disperse these left over kids out there? Which would in turn maybe feed kids from those leagues back to our clubs. We are at the bottom of the food chain and our 16’s is gone and probably won’t return.

To your second point I think awjfl didn’t want an upper Murray team unless they could field teams in all grades of the comp. That’s what I was told anyway. AFL Victoria say they want us to survive. I think it’s probably too late.

Would be a pity if the UMFNL folded.
If it did would it be possible for a few clubs to merge together and put a side in the TDFL or in Wagga?
Rip if they did fold which i don't think will happen yes they could enter 2 teams into the T.F.L. Bullioh could be a stand alone club with feds Corryong cudgie walwa all joining forces maybe tumba but their best option and this is only my opinion the farrer league they would head to.making it easier to recruit

Just found out the kids playing footy in the Wagga comp are not even playing under the upper Murray name the kids have to play as EWK Hawks (east Wagga kooringal hawks)

So is Evan now coaching the Corryong Demons on sat and the EWK Hawks on a Sunday?

Didn’t realise junior leagues took themselves so seriously (AWJFL and Wagga).

Might have to think about possibly switching to the round ball.

It’s a better option than the kids not playing at all

Wouldn’t they be better off spreading themselves between a few different TDFL clubs...? How many kids are we talking about?
If they are a mix from all 5 clubs they were going to play against each other anyway. Feds kids to Mitta, bullioh to tallangatta etc etc...

In stead of getting a side together to play in Wagga helping out bigger town sides. Maybe get together and help a country side out? Eg mitta who haven't got many juniors. Not as much travel.
And the idea of bullioh being a stand alone club in the tdfl!! Your kidding yourself!!

Couldn’t it work the other way though mate? Why do some of the awjfl clubs need two teams when they can’t fill these teams with their own local kids? 4 or 5 of our kids are playing at tallangatta this year in the u 17s. So we are sending our kids to play for other clubs up the food chain. And what do we get in return? F$@k all. And there is no future for umfl clubs without the juniors coming through, aspiring to play senior footy, hence my comment on the future of our league.

And yes bullioh have their hand firmly on it if they think they can go a step up and be competitive.

Awjfl are made up of a growing number of albury/wodonga kids. Very much doubt mums and dads would send youngs kids up to Corryong for a 9.30 game just so they get a game. As for your kids going to tallangatta for a game that a personal choice can't stop kids wanting to improve themselves, what you get in return (hopefully) is better matured senior player in time. What my thought is the remaining kids in the upper Murray get together and help another country team out filling a team.
