I feel sorry for Murph.

I never have questioned his effort or desire to do his best for the Navy Blue.
Because we have been crap he has been forced to play a role that doesn't suit him at all. People forget how small he is and the injuries he has suffered. If he had played his career as a wing/fwd he would have thought of differently.
IMO comments regarding Murphy have been unfair and in some cases disgraceful. Is he elite? No, but has played some good footy over a long period in tough circumstances.
Next year I hope they give the Captaincy to Doc or Cripps and let him play a better role without the burden.

He has had a career many would give anything for and has always given his best for the Navy Blue.

I don't like to knock our Captain, especially after a good year last year, but I was at the game and those stats do not reflect the stinker he had.
Sure a lot of our team had brain snaps (especially Simmo's howler kicking in short to Marchbank which was immediately turned over for a goal), but I did not see any desperation or leadership from Murph on Saturday. He plays for the free way too much instead of giving the young blokes a lesson in winning the ball.
I'd argue that MOST of our players were caught playing for frees on Saturday, it's part of why whenever they got a decision their way we simply didn't fold back in time to stop them. Most of last year, whenever we'd concede a free kick or the opposition would take a mark, I'd be screaming at the screen, telling us to hold them up; the key to our defense is time to get set up, make sure the loose/inteceptor players are in the right spots and those that aren't have the right matchup/location. Against GC, we struggled to do that all bloody match; name an inside 50 that they got which was ponderous, thoughtful, or difficult.

I'd agree that Murphy had a shocker, but that wasn't what I was disputing. The original post - one of many potting Murphy in this thread - said that Murph goes missing a lot. The stats don't just not demonstrate it, they actively disprove it.

There was a single match last year, where Murphy could have won it for us and didn't; he came screaming out of a stoppage on the forward flank, we were less than a goal down, and he was 45-50 out on the run, so what does he do? Tries to do the team thing; didn't want to kick it himself. Put it to the hotspot, and the resulting contest led to the ball getting swept away by organised defense.

One match, and a single play, that he wasn't a captain.

Apart from that, he has given everything to us. There is a reason that, since his return to fitness, he has averaged nearly 30 disposals despite being the little bloke without the pace and agility of his youth. He clearly gives a shit; one wonders, really, if some of the people potting him would give as much in the same position.

Yes my main knock on him atm is that he's not responding the way a Captain should. Better to free him up to play his own game without extra responsibility. For me, Docherty is the man who needs to lead us next year. He is already the 'General down back' and I don't think the responsibility would affect his game as he thrives on playing for the jumper, and being down back is better placed to see the play unfold. Cripps seems a bit to easy going for me and I don't want to see his form drop due to extra responsibility also.

That kinda illustrates my point. If the Captain plays for the free continually, it sets a poor example for the others. Even Joel Selwood plays for the free too much but makes up for it in sheer desperation, and can sense when a lift is needed, which I don't see from Murph. He's definitely getting the ball enough and I don't think he goes missing as others have said, I just think he needs to rise to the occasion and set a precedent, but alas I don't think it's his nature.

Yes, we need to be way more accountable. Our tackling has slipped and we are back to throwing one arm out in a half assed attempt.
We also need to keep our feet. Slipping or even diving way to much.

Can someone explain why we didn't persevere with Holman ?
He was delisted at the end of 2015 after playing 9 matches in two seasons. Surely he could have been kept on the list for Bolton's first year as coach.
We dropped a whole bunch around that time.....[I was a Tut fan as well as Holman even Boeky is pretty good]
no way of knowing we was going to be a worker and pretty tough competitor as we have seen...luck of the draw?
Our best players are around everwhere look at crows, dees, and eagle

We did get Judd tho !!!

I just think there are a lot of unrealistic expectations amoungst our Carlton big footy forum members, 2018 -2019 mentioned as "potentially playing finals" and "2020 top 4 flag contenders".
These opinions seem to be the general flavour and if you don't agree you must be crazy sort of vibe.
It will most likely take at least another 4-5 years to be a great team, give the players time to mature.
Please look at Nat Fyfe in 2010, a stick figure at only 77kgs - 5 years later a total transformation.
Keep things in perspective.
isn't this our 5th 4year plan

Have a feeling about this week we will get up.

But a lot has to improve.

We still can't seem to stick a tackle after all this time.

I feel sorry for Casboult.

I never have questioned his effort or desire to do his best for the Navy Blue.
Because we have been crap he has been forced to play a role that doesn't suit him at all. People forget how battered he is and the injuries he has suffered. If he had played his career as a third tall/ruck he would have thought of differently.
IMO comments regarding Casboult have been unfair and in some cases disgraceful. Is he elite? No, but has played some good footy over a long period in tough circumstances.
Next year I hope they give the main forward role to Charlie or McKay and let him play a better role without the burden.

I’m happy to move on from this game, put it behind us, learn from it, and look forward. But before I do, one last thought...

I have been as harsh as anyone in this thread. Not like me, but the performance was seriously disappointing.

However, let’s not confuse the “immediate” with the “long term”. I understand the anger, disappointment and frustration that is being felt. This game in isolation was awful. No doubt.

But it’s an aberration. As a collective, there’s no way we could play that badly again, if we tried. The fumbling, the basic skill errors, and the comedy capers that went on, were strange in the extreme, but it was a one off. It had to be.

Ending the careers of Weitering, Polson, Murphy, Bolton and so on, and so on, is a bit of an overreaction I would’ve thought.

It was a catastrophic day at the office. It happens to the best of us. Again, if we’re discussing THIS game in isolation, go your hardest, because they deserve every criticism in here.
But if we’re discussing the club and where we’re at, and where we’re heading, I for one, couldn’t be happier. We have everything in place to be a powerhouse in the very near future.

Put this one down to Mars being in retrograde, angry footy gods, or a glitch in the cosmic force. Whatever it was, it was a one off and you can rest assured, we will not see another performance like that from our boys again.

We’ll be fine. Don’t worry...

Well said.
I would give the captaincy to Cripps.
He is an absolute brute who will drag the players forward with him. The very opposite to murph.
I can appreciate murph has had to captain us over our toughest period but he needs a break and we need a new leader.
Change is needed.

With Harry they just want to see him have an extended run of consecutive games. Never had that in his short career. 200cm fwd/rucks take time. If he can get 5-6 games in VFL and improve each week benefits will be huge

Although playing in the ruck isn't an issue. No more risky than playing key forward

He is not a fwd/ruck. He is a key forward only. De koning is a fwd/ruc.

Only one that counts, unfortunately.
I guess what I’m pointing out is that we weren’t that bad. With the ball in the right hands going inside 50 the game looks completely different and the suns have 1 bloke who can tear the game away.
