Autopsy Blues loss to Suns discussion/rant etc etc.

Forget VFL history, the task facing SOS et al in 2015 was to replace every player on the list not named Cripps or Docherty. The only clubs with a comparable experience are GWS and GC. Possibly Melbourne, to a lesser extent.

this is called throwing the baby out with the bathwater
when you get rid of every player on the list and replace them... with say... Lamb.. mullet.. summer.. Phillips..goringe.. Palmer etc?

I think you can argue that he does embody all 3 of the "Cs".

You have rightly identified he is caring.

When you look at some of the serious injuries he has sustained, some have come about as a result of him putting his relatively small body on the line. This certainly ticks the courage box & he has won plenty of clearances/contested possessions over the journey.

As far as consistency goes he has won 2 John Nicholls Medals (2011 & 2017), finished 2nd in 2008 & 2009, 3rd in 2010 (Judd won in each of these seasons), 2nd in 2014 & 2015. Most of the years in which he hasn't featured at the pointy end of the John Nicholls Medal have been the result of serious injuries (2012 was a serious shoulder injury & 2016 was that terrible ankle injury).

Any suggestion that Murph is in "cruise control too often" is not supported by the facts.

I reckon Murph will play another 4-5 years as a forward, like boomer, he's ability to stop and change directions and hit targets is very good.

Reckon as a pure offensive player there'll be use for him for a while

Yep, I did not even mention my disgrace with how much it cost to pay for food there.
After I paid $12-30 for a 600 ml coke and hot dog I promised myself I will never pay for food and drink there ever again. Hate to think what a family man buying for 3 kids would cost. It is criminal prices.

Take your own - food/drinks at the football are a disgrace

This might sound weird but it almost feels like since Pickett got injured we don't have a Plan B in terms of transitioning the footy forward.

Pickett's score involvements were huge in the JLT, I think Bolts was very much banking on getting the ball into his hands at every possible opportunity to deploy that electric pace, or get him chasing onto loose balls over the back of the zone.

Since he's been injured we suddenly look devoid of ideas and slow in moving the ball from one end to the other.

Obviously the coaches wouldn't have based their entire attacking gameplan around a single inexperienced player, but it certainly doesn't look like we have any kind of alternate strategy.

What has also been emphasised since Pickett's injury is how bloody slow our forward line is. We simply cannot carry Lamb, Wright, SOS, Levi etc in the same part of the ground - it is not how modern footy is played and we need to start managing the list to get some genuine pace in there (hard workers who tackle and are quick in the Puopolo mould, don't have to be blue chip talents). Surely we can find a couple of guys in the state leagues with late picks to fulfil these roles?

Cannot wait to see Williamson back in the side, it's a fair indictment that missing such a young inexperienced player could have such a big impact on our fortunes but he offers genuine pace, a cool head and excellent disposal, a trifecta that few others in the team could boast.

Yup .... this was why I was so shattered when he got injured. We have been so unlucky with injuries I honestly believe when we are ready we will have a year like RFC last year .... we have paid our injury dues!

Everyone jumped down JSOS back last week for having one bad game where he played a good chunk of it on ranch who is a champion.

But at least JSOS even if he didn’t get much ball would always lead his opponent away from the ball, freeing up our forward line for space, now without him we just have one strategy and that is all our forwards clumping together in the middle of our F50

Don't know if this has been discussed but I think it's very valid.

SOS mightn't have the highest possessions or the best leg speed, but he would have one of the highest workrates in the team. In our forward line we can't really do away with those sorts of players; Silvagni and Wright would probably be the only ones who play with a high motor. Constant movement is better than stagnation and waiting for a bomb.

Haven't read the whole thread.

Thoughts on Cuningham's game? His stats looked promising. No clearances is disappointing, still see him becoming an inside/outside player.

Though I see the merit in playing him at HB for a while as he settles in.

He thought his way through that run long the wing very well

Can play, needs a good run at it and to remain injury free and he should become best 22. Good size, good skills and footy brain all help.

So I've read a fair whack of this thread and the doom and gloom, my 2c worth.
  • 10 players in our side less than 50 games, some of them are still developing and are under 80kg's
  • We had a bad day at the office, the fumbling, dropped marks and poor skills, we aren't as bad as we played, the effort was there but our skills let us down on the day.
  • Gold Coast have some big bodied players compared to us and destroyed us in the air and pressured us around the ball.
  • We are still young, so are a lot of other teams, however, our young players are key positional players, midfield, CHF, CHB, we don't have the luxury to play them in the pockets or flanks.
  • The Pickett injury has hurt us as we don't have a fast forward to apply forward pressure, Thomas and Lamb as forwards have no x factor, Mullet and O'Shea were interesting selections, still yet to see why we need them?
  • I'm sure the match committee would have selected a ruck man to replace Kreuzer if we had a fit ruck man to come in.
  • We really need our best 22 out on the park to be any sort of chance

Good summation. Only thing I will add is because we are so young we will not know our best 22 for a long while and as such players will be coming in and out.

I look at what Clarkson did last year after a few early losses. He said we can't win the flag and brought in kids for experience and put seasoned players in different roles to refresh & look at other genuine options. Benefits are showing already.

That's why he is the best coach in the AFL.

I've not read the thread but as I understand it it's fairly doom and gloom. It needn't be. Gold Coast are not as bad as advertised, they've been woefully under-performing ever since Eade took charge. The feeling as soon as Eade was signed was "great, here's a waste of a few years". Even during his first game in charge a few of us in the members area were laughing and joking that this could be the shortest coaching reign ever (snidely hoping he'd be sacked after 1 poor match, given the lack of hope his signing gave us).

They're a decent team, as shown in patches last year and in particular the 80 point drubbing of Hawthorn. The issue was they'd play 1 qtr of amazing football then not try the other 3. Now with a decent coach they've got the motivation to play proper football and it's showing. I don't think we're as good as the Suns at this point, and wasn't expecting us to win going into the match. The positive I took from the match was that we lost it, they didn't win it. They never overwhelmed us into submission. Our unforced fumbles were unbelievably bad and imo are the sole reason we lost.
