The Pearson name also holds a special record in the Essendon District Football League region.

Playing in the EDFL in 1939, Pearson Snr booted 28 goals in one match for La Mascotte.

The league record still stands today.

https://www.smh.com.au/national/hot-form-with-dogs-and-footy-20101227-198k3.html

Meanwhile, his natural ability as a sportsman in the Ascot Vale-Essendon area attracted the attention of the Essendon District Cricket and the Essendon VFL (now AFL) clubs. One of his feats, kicking 28 goals in a single match in 1939 playing for La Mascotte, still stands as a district record.

World War II interrupted his rise in sport and he served as an AIF gun-layer guarding a RAAF radar unit at a remote jungle outpost in Dutch New Guinea. He was invalided home before the war ended, with tropical dermatitis, perforated ears and tattered nerves.

He made his debut with Essendon's senior football team in 1945 but had to spend a period of rehabilitation at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital with many other young men suffering from what Pearson termed "scarred minds".

Football was his saviour. His confidence returned playing VFL - he was a star in Essendon's 1946 VFL premiership team, although injury during the season perhaps cost him the first postwar Brownlow Medal. He polled 13 votes to 19 by the winner, Melbourne's Don Cordner.

Pearson played in all 18 home and away games in 1947 - the year he married Joan Muir - but a crippling knee injury in the final game against Collingwood at Victoria Park ended his career. He was only 25 and had played a total of 51 games for the Bombers and kicked 24 goals.

Nice overview of his life and career....but...articles written in 2010 only direct one's interest to an event in 1939...

Perhaps the local Essendon paper we need just hasn't been loaded onto Trove yet.
But at the moment I hesitate to accept the 28 goals claim as confirmed.

I've tried all sorts of variations on Trove - surname only and 28 and then filtering down to just those for 1939...variations of football, surname, club name etc etc. Have found a few match scores for La Mascotte in 1939, but average totals not huge ones...and no ref to a Pearson kicking a bag of goals. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/...01&dateTo=1939-12-31&q=essendon+"la+mascotte"

22 - S.A - D. Kroemer, Loxton Seconds (v ????) - Upper Murray FL B Grade 1954
2 games of 20 goals, and one of 19 in the Loxton B's 1954

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/48124918

When the lists were first created on footypedia years ago, they were meant to refer to senior division matches only, not seconds or D grade or junior or school. I'd prefer it if they were not eligible for inclusion, but if most others don't mind and there has been a change of feeling, then I suppose I could see them there too [in italics perhaps ?]. But it will lead to a real skewing of various lists.

For example, Doug Ensor's 60 goals in an under-14 match in 1967

Yes, I've had a good look and found nothing (back then) either, so I agree there must be some doubt about this one.

This was in an earlier thread that covers this topic:- 28 - Vic - William Pearson – La Mascotte (v ????) – Essendon DFL –1946*

* as stated in the EDFL 75th anniversary history book.

https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/leagues-goals-per-game-records.238200/#post-7016674

He was playing for Essendon in 1946 so lots of doubt on this one, given that the EDFL didn't even seem to know when it happened.

yes i agree
in this case its loxtons second team / not senior team
the fellow is at the end of his football journey
should go from the list

in some instances the club only has a team in the second grade
i'd rather put these as a footnote if necessary or historically significant

The story does also get a (modern-times) run in the Football Record (2009 Rd. 5 - page 82):
Pearson’s first club was the exotically named La Mascotte club, which competed in the Essendon district league. They wore a blue guernsey with a yellow stripe down the middle. There wasn’t a yellow streak down his back though. He was a 14-year-old boy against men. One opponent warned: “Kick another goal and I’ll break your legs.” It didn’t deter him – one afternoon he amassed a league record 28 goals. He says: “I’m glad somebody took notice because I was kicking so many that I lost count!”

20 - Qld - Darren Bradshaw Brisbane Lions (v Morningside????) AFL Queensland – 2002
can find JackO about this one on the net 2002 QAFL game and all
He was kicking plenty of goals that year according to the Football Record (e.g. 47 after 7 rounds) but whether he got 20 in a game is a bit doubtful. The Record included results, goalkickers etc. for AFLQ games that year.

This was posted years ago in a similar thread: I went to a Brisbane vs Carlton game back in 2002 at the gabba Darren Bradshaw (brother of Daniel) kicked 20 goals against I think Morningside it was the Suncoast Lions vs Morningside

https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/biggest-player-goals-haul-in-one-game.73767/page-4

Perhaps it really did happen sometime that year, but when Brisbane played Carlton at the Gabba in 2002 (it only happened once) Bradshaw kicked 7 that week against Mt. Gravatt (as shown in the Record).

MINOR GRADES.

Dearle Kicks 28 Goals.

The remarkable kicking of Dearle (North Fremantle) when he kicked 28 of his team's 31 goals against Achilles was the outstanding performance in the Amateur Football Association's fixtures on Saturday. Dearle's total for the season is now 71 and he now heads the goal-kicking list with Woolcock (Palmyra) in second place with 66 goals. Dearle is a brother of the South Fremantle league player.

University beat Maylands by five Points in a hard game while Inglewood took the lead in the "A" division by beating Wembrey ley by four points. Mt. Hawthorn scored heavily against Claremont. Mosman Park led until a few minutes before time, but East Fremantle finished strongly to snatch victory. South Perth surprised by defeating Sandovers team by 62 points.

Scores:

"A" Division.

University. 5.8. beat Maylands. 7.9: Mt. Hawthorn. 20.22 (Richards 7). beat Claremont. 8.9; Inglewood. 6.7. beat Wembley. 5.9: South Perth. 18.16 (Curry 5. O'Dea 5) beat Sandovers. 9.14.

List of Highest SA Scores in a single match

26 - S.A - V. Camporeale - Seaton Ramblers (v Colonel Light Gardens) - SAAFA A3 - 1961
This is Vin Camporeale, almost certainly the same chap who went on to have a very long career as a boundary umpire in the SANFL (also grandfather to Scott).

In A3, Seaton Ramblers’ rover Vin Camporeale kicked 26.10 in his team’s 48.35 to 4.2 thrashing of Colonel Light Gardens in August. This equalled Sid Maley’s record set in A1 in 1946.

It as the last H&A of the season , Dromana turned up with half a side. On A miserable day Dromana used some young lads to add to their side
After Hastings kicked 52 to half time the match was called off
Mentiplay kicked 29 goals in a half of football”

This one is on the NSW list should it be on the Vic list?
21 Stuart Way - Berrigan v Wunghnu - Picola & Districts – 2005

This one should be Paul Speechley
26 - NSW Paul Spreechley Nowra Blues (v Dapto) Leisure Coast FL 199?

i've discounted the St Patricks - (United Church League) 29 goal score from 1935 as this was b grade

20 Vic Mr Williamson Woodside (v Carrajung) Alberton FL - 1952
this would most likely be Charles Williamson 1952 july 26
