The Great Injustice - The Grand Final Contract thread

I think that would prove how amateur and pathetic the competition is if they decide that the grand final will be set in stone at Stadium A before the season

Where is the WAFL grand final for 2017 going to be played?

The best system IMO would be to have a system where the GF is hosted at states according to team numbers, as in, if in 2038 there are 3 WA teams, 3 NSW teams, 2Qld teams, 2SA and 10 Vic, you have 10 out of the next 20 grand finals at the G, then have it at the Perth arena 3 times over 20 years, NSW 3 times etc, etc.

Would be really exciting seeing teams plan their rebuilds to coincide with hosting the GF 3-5 years in advance.

It is amazing the viccentrics want to stop the game from becoming truly national. They will stall the games growth.
When other states get a 100k seat stadium then maybe we will be able to have interstate Grand Finals.

Personally in due course would like to see the GF played at a neutral venue, eg this year played in Sydney due to participating teams being from Melbourne & Adelaide. Probably would never work but just a bit of thought to put a bit of fairness into where the GF is played. Also umpires need to be from other States also, if possible. Having umpires all from Victoria umpiring the game at the weekend plus being played at a venue that favoured one side was a bit of a joke;)

It wasn't the 40 consecutive GF's at the MCG that was the real problem of this deal, it was that for 40 years they had to play at least 1 final a week at the MCG. There already was Sydney, West Coast, Brisbane and Adelaide in the league, WCE had made finals in 1988, 1990,1991 and looked like again in 1992 when the deal was signed, Sydney had been there in 1986 and 1987 and they knew Port wanted to get in given the 1990 attempt to put a team in and that WA would get a second side, and they just blindly said yep they can play their finals at the MCG. Introducing the 8 and 2 PF's in 1994 got them out of the s**t for a few years but the 2004 Brisbane home PF at the MCG showed them up for fools.

You forget WCE were robbed of hosting 2 non-GF finals. I think 96 & 99.

Australia doesnt have the luxury to fund a 100000 seat neutral venue

Wembley isnt an option here

The AFL have been selling memberships for near on 40 years based on the predication that it's members would be granted access to the Grand Final. It was the original shitfight between the VFL and MCC/Government that all subsequent shitfights stem from, and it is now a golden goose that relentlessly lays golden eggs for the AFL.

This is a factor that needs due consideration before moving the Grand Final is even looked at.

Just out of curiosity how many does ANZ Stadium hold?

70,000, BUT its being converted to a rectangular format because its not viable in its current configuration

ANZ is the classic white elephant

It just doesn't feel fair - an opportunity to the other state governments wasn't even tabled. AFL fold to the Vic govt in return for football funding.

20 extra years...The Grand Final will never move in my life time unfortunately.

That's not to say i'm against Melbourne - I live here. It just doesn't feel right.

Other states weren't considered because the VIC government in pumping in a few hundred million into a AFL owned asset.

Oppo supporters should be happy, the AFL is getting considerably richer.

The MCC is also pumping in $800m+ to develop the MCG on the proviso it stays.

WA govt also pumped in 1.8 billion to a stadium that afl is the predominant tenant.

Great, but the AFL don't own it do they? Only a small percentage of the profits of that stadium go to the AFL.

$225m is going straight onto the AFL's bottom line.

No, the AFL did not contribute a single
Penny to the thing. But the fact of he matter the stadium was built first and foremost with football in mind.

I'm happy with the capacity of the stadium, but I think its important for the growth of the game as a national sport for the grand final to be shared around, even if its not every year. In the big picture the growth of the game is of greater benefit to the AFL than the loss of revenue an interstate grand final would generate

since when do the afl give a toss about the growth of the game? run by victorians for victorians
