I’ll say it again

His contract and the expectations will break him.

he’s pulled off a swindle and now needs the mental strength to stay the course. I think we’re already seeing the burden of expectation weighing him down

Ask Tom Boyd if it gets easier

The other thing is his teammates. They are his teammates not his mates, a very big difference

The people you work with aren’t always your friends

Your teammates know what you’re being paid, how you carry yourself, and whether you are performing and what their pay looks like

There will be plenty of niggle from his teammates, people around the club, supporters etc

the gap between who is and who they thought he would be is too big to bridge

It will break him.

I was slightly confused by the comments by the On The Couch guys because it seemed to me they wanted him to just flat out ignore what the coaches are telling him, or go the other way and tell the coaches he's to be played as a deep intercepting defender only.
Perhaps BT can be the coach. After all, Goody clearly isn't allowed to run the footy department

Yep! It would be a PR nightmare if Melbourne were to drop Lever. Imagine paying someone $850K to play reserves after giving up 2 first round picks for them!

Besides it’s in our own interest that they play him every game! :D
Tom Boyd, Chris Mayne, Tom Rockliff...all on good money they aren't earning so much.

Still those clubs didn't give up nearly as much

Hahaha... how great is it reading this thread over on the dees board!..
It goes from cheering and happy at the start when the trade happened, to cockiness over getting from the crows, to fawning over the way Lever spoke elequently in his first presser, to how great he is gonna be for the entire team blah, blah, blah.... vomit..

To this;
So much wrong with him being at our club. Obviously gave way too much for him. 2 first round picks really hurt especially when the last two drafts we really haven't picked up any top line players, another year without getting our hands on a top line junior I believe will hurt us long term.
The acquisition of Lever has meant our back 6 has had to adapt to him being there. And our backline was pretty damn solid last year. Although you can't blame the poor form of Hunt, Hibberd and Jetta completely on Lever, surely it's no coincidence that their form slumps as he comes into the side.
Acquiring Lever has not only been disruptive to the back half, but his form has been horrible. If his name was Oscar McDonald, he would have been sentenced and hung by now by most supporters. His positioning is way off, his ball use is just horrible, and his decision making is one of the worst in the side.
Another problem is the coaches seem to have no idea how to use him. Whoever our backline coach is, should be sacked on the spot. We have arguably one of if not the best backlines on paper, yet have been performing as arguably the worst. If it's Troy Chaplin, then we should be having no hesitation to sack him. He stuffed up out offence last season, and is stuffing up our backline now. Get rid of him before he ruins this club.
Lastly, with what we paid for him in picks and in price, expectations are raised for player and club. So criticism will come fast and quick. And fair enough. We paid a bomb for him. He should be playing better.

By all reports Jake has good character. He will need it if his form continues as the criticism from fans, opposition players and media will keep coming until he starts to string some good games together. But hey, with what we paid for this guy, I expect him to not just be good. I fear for his mental state, not just his on field performance if things don't improve soon. If he is still playing this bad by mid season, there will be more than questions being asked. Let's see how Jake and the team respond.”

And this;

“Yeah, we rolled the dice with the odds in our favour, but the house always has the last laugh! I don't know, it didn't look like too much of a gamble on paper, but when you look at what we gave up, we should be getting a player who is a lock to at least hold his position in the best 22. Like I said, If his name was Oscar McDonald, he would have been banished to the VFL for the rest of the season. I've seen him live twice now, and he has picked off a few balls coming in, and done the occasional decent fist away, but unfortunately his errors have far outweighed the good things. Yes he is young and time is on his side to improve and gel with our back 6, but from what we have seen so far, the criticism is absolutely warranted at him, the coaches and the decision to pay a high price to draft him when on the verge of finals. He will be the most closely watched player next round and It will be fascinating to see how he responds against the best team in the AFL at the moment. I'd hate to think of what the media will do to him and us if we get smashed. Which is a definite possibility tbh..” end quote/

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha.. ahahahahaha.. ahahahahahahahahahahahaha!.... it’s fu*king hilarious!!

And they changed the name of the thread title because they were getting all sooky that we reamed them.

I wonder if he regrets seeking a trade as he was uber comfortable and full of confidence in our defensive setup..the flog

I'm sure deep down he's pretty happy to be paid 850k a year.

I would be, even if I was being found out for being not worth the money paid.

I wouldn’t be.
Nope, me either. It's not as if $300-400K means you are living below the poverty line, it's still huge money. Half the money and constantly getting good media coverage, hyped up as a superstar and All Australian selection would far outweigh big money, but scathing criticism in every form of media available and your clubs own supporters piling on creating even more pressure.

Exactly. These are highly competitive people. You have to be to make it to that level. They wouldn’t just say oh well I’m getting paid a lot of money so who cares. And they wouldnt be able to look their teammates in the eye.

I'd be quite happy to see Lever get some comeuppance but I'm not sure it's as certain as you think. I live in the same neck of the woods as the Levers and I know plenty of young blokes who know them personally and plenty of others who've had interactions with them in junior footy. Jake is not popular, even in his own family, and not too many people have anything nice to say about his dad. But Jake doesn't care. He has talent and he's got gargantuan self-belief. As much as it would be poetic justice to see him struggle, I reckon he'll come through it.

If his gargantuan self belief equalled his ability, there’d be nothing to come through

He’s all at sea, melting under pressure. His cracking is taking place here & now

I think it’s broken much better players than him

He is after all a middling talent who’d struggle to make the next level on even terms
I think Melbourne will revise their expectations of him and adjust his role to suit his abilities. And he'll be adequate, if overpaid and unpopular. I won't however rule out him getting into a fist fight with one of his team mates. :)

Case and point was when roughhead caught him htb... Which happened to him like maybe 3 times in his career here... No doubt the pressure of playing accountable football is getting to him... His lack of speed and skill is not being overcome with brains.

Strangely I haven't seen much commentary from BT on this topic...not often is he lost for words. Perhaps he is out roaming for solutions

One thing I've learned is that if BT gives you a nickname, your AFL career may be in trouble.

Example 1 - The (not the full) Package - Kicked 5 on the weekend against Port after stinking it up for the past 2 years.

Example 2 - The Best Fister in the AFL - Changes clubs on a big money deal and forgets how to play.

He’s still a good fister though.
Melbourne would feel completely fisted at the moment.
