Is it really harder to go b2b than win 2 premierships with a gap year?

I personally think it's a lot harder to win two premierships over 3 years than 2 years.

My reasons are:

  • More change in the competition
  • Retaining club culture and premiership standard for longer
  • Unable to be thwarted by hungry oppo coaches and players, for 70+ rounds compared to 45.
  • No honey moon peroid
  • No media pressure or assisted belief
  • More exposed to changes in your list, players and culture.

So are those your reasons why b2b is harder to accomplish than a 2in3?

The fact that Geelong didnt win back to back despite having two opportunities to do so should indicate to you that 2 in 3 is easier to accomplish than back to back.

Next thread please.

My reasons are:

  • More change in the competition and you're allowed to change with it
  • Retaining club culture and premiership standard for longer except for that year in between where you didn't retain premiership standard
  • Unable to be thwarted by hungry oppo coaches and players, for 70+ rounds compared to 45. Even though actually thwarted by oppo coaches and players in the middle year
  • No honey moon peroid but maybe a premiership hangover
  • No media pressure or assisted belief could work either way
  • More exposed to changes in your list, players and culture.but you're also an attractive club for players to come to

Going to back-to-back is harder IMO. The team that has won the most recent premiership will always be the 'hunted' and have more pressure in that regard than the other 17 teams. We saw the Bulldogs crumble under that pressure last year.

From my experience watching football reigning premiers aren't actually hunted. It's more or less the opposite. From what I've seen oppo clubs are usually stunned with fear of the built/hyped up premiers and get thrashed, knowing they're playing this big scary side hyped up by the media. It's not like they have 17 other clubs hunting them. They have 17 other clubs shit scared to play them already calculating their seasons around not winning those games. It's an advantage.

It's only when these clubs show signs of falling clubs really go hard at them and hunt them. We weren't hunted until around 2015 when everyone saw weakness and really really went hard at us. The same will happen to Hawthorn, clubs go/will go hard when they show weakness. That's another reason why I'd suggest 2 flags over a longer period is harder. You don't have that reputation as a club anymore that gives you that advantage on match day.

We didn't show weakness during our gap years, therefore weren't hunted and just stunned younger sides, so we were hunted no less than a reigning premier, clubs were still shit scared.
I haven't actually seen any clubs hunted besides Geelong and Hawthorn tbh 3 or so seasons after their last flag. Never a reigning premier.

So much harder. Having gap years is tough. You initially think it will be all sex, drugs and rock n roll but you end up in factory working the graveyard shift wearing a poorly designed moon suit with failing safety features hoping you won't be infected with asbestos poisoning.

Point is Geelong are really good. The best.

Off the top of my head... clubs that have gone back to back:

Hawthorn
Brisbane
Adelaide
Essendon
Carlton
Richmond
Melbourne
Collingwood
We have. Broke a league record (still standing) of 23 wins in a row in the process.

That's a fair few. I'd imagine around only 4 or so clubs have managed to win 2 with a gap year. Probably even less.
