New Australian coach Justin Langer

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-...irmed-as-new-australian-cricket-coach/9721858
Cricket Australia has confirmed Western Australia coach and former Test batsman Justin Langer as the new man in charge of the Australian men's team, replacing Darren Lehmann.

Lehmann left the team after the ball-tampering scandal which overshadowed the end of Australia's tour of South Africa and led to the banning of Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft.

Speculation about his replacement has centred around Langer, and Cricket Australia made it official with a release this morning.

Langer will take over on May 22, beginning a four-year term that will take him through home and away Ashes series, a Cricket World Cup in 2019 and the ICC World Twenty20 the following year.

"I'm a little bit nervous but I'm very excited, so it's a really big day," he told ABC after the announcement.
A safe pair of hands imo. I might have liked to see CA be a bit more imaginative than that but good look to him, he's a mountain of work to do.

Not a great bloke.
Doesn't know much except cricket, but a very hard nosed coach and professional in terms of playing training standards.
I'd expect us to improve in results.
Absolutely the wrong choice if they were fair dinkum about changing the perception of the Oz team.
Fortunately Tim Paine is skipper (for now) to moderate our onfield persona.
I expect Langer to undermine him if he doesn't do what Justin says. Justin is that kind of guy.

Not so sure about this. Yes, he’s been renowned as a tough coach who expects a lot for his players on the field, but almost just as much off the field as people. Reinforces core beliefs and values. He’s really changed the culture of WA cricket from a point where it was practically a laughing stock. The WA boys both like and respect him.

In my interactions with him he seems like the perfect person to refresh the CA image.

Well done Langer

Hopefully he gets good support as he'll need it as we rebuild.

Will he ever see his wife and daughters again ?
I am surprised he is taking on all formats at once. Massive workload.
For his own personal life would have been more balanced to be coach of only one or two formats.
Good luck to the little hippie all the same.

Good luck to Justin Langer, it's not going to be an easy job for him. I don't think Australia can win playing the New Zealand way. There's a place for smart, clever and witty comments between players on opposing teams.

The good thing for Langer is we won't be expecting miracles straight away. Hopefully performances on the road improve under Langer, especially with the bat. Too often in Lehmann's era Australia's batting disintegrated on the road.

I'll always remember the 3rd Test, Aus v S Africa, at Jo'burg in 2006.

South Africa scored 303 in their first innings, then Langer ducked into a short ball from Ntini (first ball of the innings) and went down, in slow motion, like he'd been shot. Matt Hayden was very concerned and Langer had to be carefully escorted from the field with plenty of blood oozing from a cut to the back of his head. Heavily concussed, he was well and truly out of the Test.

Australia scored 9/270 and South Africa added 258 in their second innings. Australia needed 292 to win.

Hayden and Ponting fell cheaply before Hussey and Martyn took the score to 198. Symonds scored 29 off 26 balls before falling at 4/228. Gilchrist and Warne failed and we were 6/237. Then Martyn fell for 101 at 7/258. Lee and Stuart Clark took it to 275 when Clark fell to Ntini and the new ball. As last man in Kasprowicz came to the crease there was a rumble in the Aussie dressing room. Langer had slipped into his whites and started padding up.

The Foxtel cameras showed Ponting, Hayden and Gilchrist trying to convince Langer he wasn't going to bat. Langer kept pushing them away, still in cloud cuckoo-land.

Lee and Kasprowicz got the runs and Australia won by 2 wickets.

After the game Ponting was asked what he would have done if a wicket had fallen? Ponting said he would have waited till Langer got onto the field, then declared the innings closed...and run from the stadium as fast as he could so he wouldn't have to face Langer.

The Australian Cricket Board have chosen wisely. The team is in good hands. Good luck to JL.

how far and how deep did they have to search for a new supremo. ?

My guess is that like every other conglomeration, they had their second and third hands already selected.
Not that it is a bad choice. A very good choice as he is a reknowned fair and equal chap. Lang may we live..

Langer is the wrong choice, especially after hearing his first presser.
Already making excuses for poor behaviour.

Hypocrisy is still alive and well in the Australian cricket team.

McGrath calling Sarwan a "pussy" and asking him what Brian Lara's dick tastes like is perfectly fine and just "good cricket banter". However, bringing McGrath's wife into it is crossing the line. :drunk:

Yes, Jane McGrath's was undergoing cancer treatment at that point in time, so I can understand the sensitive nature of it. However, McGrath was the one who went after Sarwan. Don't play with fire if you don't want to get burnt.

Yeah that's been part of the problem with Australian teams in recent years, they can dish it out with sledging but can't cop it when it comes back at them.

If Langer thinks that only Sarwan overstepped the line in that incident with McGrath then I don't see the culture of the Australian team changing much.

Yeah, he's not the bloke to improve the behaviour/demeanour/culture of the team imo.

But time will tell.

Langer appears a more polished and articulate version of Lehmann.

Sure on paper, he is a terrific candidate and worthy of getting the title of coach.

But he seems the type of person who'll jump to defend his players the second they receive criticism, warranted or otherwise.

As mentioned above, the reference to the McGrath - Sarwan incident makes out Sarwan the villain and paints a largely false truth to mislead the public.

He said there were 'consequences for that incident' but most would refer that to consequences for Sarwan based on how he referenced it.

Also, the way he defended the Australian brand of cricket suggests someone set in his ways of thinking.

Not sold on him being a cultural changer in terms of on-field conduct.

Elite mateship?

Here's an idea Mr Langer. Train the players to bat, bowl and field. Tell them to shut their ******* mouths and play cricket.

He won't go too soft on them from what I've heard of him in county cricket as a coach and skipper. They'll probably be fitter than they've ever been at any rate.

He stopped the WA party boy culture in its tracks, which I've always been very grateful for.

Langer's smart enough to realise that the "culture" of the team he played in is probably no longer applicable in today's current climate.

He turned WA around. Good appointment.
