When we continue to play fan favourites in the fwd line based on reputation and not form, we’re always gonna struggle.

Not a big, but why is Ballas still playing AFL? Doesn’t play front and centre well anymore, lacks pressure, slips over, kicking is iffy! Do we need that many smalls in the Fwd half?
Why mention Ballas but not McCarthy? McCarthy gets games because he played 12 good games at a different team a few years ago. Been very, very average since. Take away his time at GWS and how many people here would actually rate him that highly? Thank God GWS didn't accept our two first round offers.

he said apart from Fyfe and Mundy

Read it again. Mundy is the only mid we have that is an above average kick and/or doesn’t get his tackles broken by opposition mids at ease.

Fyfe is Fyfe and more than makes up for being an average kick in other ways.
My bad, obviously can't read.

I feel its not so much not enough talls but our general height balance as a list. We have 6 ruckman competing for 1 spot game day. Plus we have 8 guys sub 180cm and while I’m not totally against that, it’s a lot of guys who don’t have the size to lay effective tackles or compete in the air which are problems of ours. It’s getting harder and harder to be small and compete at afl these days but we seem to be banking our future on it.

I’d much prefer 4 rucks and 4 sub 180 players and a greater selection of mediums and kpps between 184-196cm. WC have 4 pure ruckman who compete for 2 spots game day and only 2 guys under 180cm which is a much better balance IMO.

I’m probably McCarthys biggest critic on here...look at my history with posts about him. I’m sick of ripping into him though, as I know he won’t be dropped.

Look I can understand some of the criticism levelled at McCarthy but he's still only just playing his 50th game, had 12 months out of the game and as has been well documented, he's been played out of position.
How long did it take Tabs or Darling to click? I think Ross said recently that once Cam gets over 100 games under his belt he will be a gun.
Time will tell I guess.

Cam will only be a gun if he is played as a third forward. Our structure looks a lot better with a Gorilla (Dixon, Apeness, Nads) as the FF, Tabs or Cox as a Roaming CHF and then Cam allowed to do his thing with a lesser backman playing on him, he will come into his own then. This is essentially how GWS used him. Unfortunately our cattle to allow this structure to happen are in the main injured or not ready. At the moment he is copping the likes of Alex Rance on him as the No 1 forward and he is not up to it as a young and relatively inexperienced player. In my eyes we did not need Jones and should have drafted another forward prospect. We lack medium forwards, infact I cant pick one on our list since Mayne left. Fasolo type would be good, the bugger cant stay on the park though, we already have enough of the injury prone types. Pure forwards with Goal sense, a kid who in Junior footy was one eyed and greedy but because of this learnt how to work into position and slot goals from anywhere. As my kid plays junior footy I see this every weekend, frowned on by junior coaches these days but in a big picture sense they are developing that goal sense for later on in their career.
On another note it S--ts me that McCarthy and Apeness do not have rock hard bodies and big bloody arms, should be locked in the bloody gym over pre season and not let out until they are built like Tabs. they should even be working on it during the season. Apeness after being out for so long should have a monster, ripped upper body. What is their diet like?? They are the two flabiest (is there such a word) guys in the squad. It points to "are their hearts really in it" it is these 1%ers that make the difference between gun players and also rans, they have the potential to be guns but do they have the commitment?????

Most players would look good if you take the third tall position. Essentially it means you will be matched up on their third defender right? Isn’t that just the easy way out to say McCarthy will come good, playing 3rd fiddle?? It’s the coward approach for a 193cm player, who doesn’t play tall.

He needs to gain more muscle to give himself the edge in one on one contests. Third tall or not, he’s been in the system a while and he needs to find a way to compete better in 50/50 contests.

Ahem.

http://m.afl.com.au/news/2018-05-25/lyon-feels-guilty-for-outofform-docker

ROSS Lyon feels "guilty" for not giving Cam McCarthy enough aerial support in Fremantle's attack, after the mobile tall was whacked for his performance against Sydney last round.

Former Western Bulldogs and Richmond coach Terry Wallace blasted McCarthy's effort as "awful" after he went goalless from 11 touches and took two marks at the SCG.

McCarthy's form has dipped since spearhead Matt Taberner went down with a broken foot in round five, with the former Giant averaging eight disposals, 2.5 marks and a goal over the past four matches.

While emerging swingman Brennan Cox has offered McCarthy some respite, Lyon put his hand up for not giving the 192cm goalkicker enough help in the air.

"I feel a bit guilty with Cam because (of) the team we've picked," Lyon said ahead of Sunday's expected wet weather clash with North Melbourne.

"I take responsibility for Cam not having a lot of support, so that just flags (David) Mundy will play a lot more forward.

"We think with the support, when he's more freer and he's not feeling the pressure of being that spearhead and tall all the time, he then plays very good footy.

"I think as a match committee we've missed that a little bit and it's something we're conscious of going forward."

The Dockers, who only scored 52 points against the Swans, also have Shane Kersten in the wings.

But Lyon has been reluctant to call on the former Geelong forward following the decision to reignite his career as a defender.

Thanks for that.

I agree that McCarthy needs more support in the air.

Sending Mundy forward is robbing Peter to pay Paul. Just like sending S Hill, and Blakely down back is robbing our midfield depth. Also, Walters playing in the midfield is taking from our front half.

Lyon and match committee are a bit of this.

Darling kicked 24 and 53 in his first 2 seasons. So he clicked early I would say.

Sorry but what a garbage article.

I could have told Ross that a year or so ago.

Sorry but wasn't lack of aerial support in the last quarter a major contributing factor to us losing the 2013 GF?

Gee whiz.
I'd say it's more about him coming out and defending one of his out of form players getting criticized in the media...

Whatever.

So McCarthy doesnt need a bit of company as far as having a few more forward targets around?

The kool aid is strong in these parts.
Mate I don't think there's a single Fremantle supporter on Bigfooty or not who thinks that.

I wasn't even disagreeing with you, you strange person

Not the first time I've been called a strange person to be fair.

I've found a fair few that disagree as of late to be honest. Feels like I've wandered onto Dockerland by mistake recently.

Aren't those articles just for people that can't be bothered to watch the media conference?

Need to draft some more pure fwds. We drafted midfielders for years and we still paying the price.

Last year we got switta and dixon. Couple of years before that nads and yarran. Yarran was a massive loss. Apeness and simpson didnt work out.

Need to take a goal kicker in the first round even if it is a stretch. Wc are stocked with natural goal kickers and still have brander and allen in the cupboard and ryan on the injury list.
Obviously rosco has a defensive game plan. Hes moved away from the fully effort based team and focused more on the defensive transition. Now its time to find some goal kickers by either playing wats available or drafting more. Having really only one tested tall fwd in tabs isnt gonna cut it we need more depth. We all know cox isnt a natural goal kicker but is played due to necessity. Kerston isnt upto it and mccarthy is a lead up type. Just play nads and see wat his got to offer. And if that doesnt work ape can have a crack. Hopefully we can get a look at dixon and switta towards the end of the season.
