Thats what i was trying to say :p

Wasn't potting the bloke , he's been/ still a great Carlton man just hasn't played to his strenghs due to not having the cattle to allow that.

Still think as you stated, Smurph can value add to this team for the next 3 years as a Winger/HHF, with OCCASIONAL stoppage rotations. Use his footy brain, use his foot skills. Can fill a slot next to Pickett in that role.

JAB, in all seriousness, he is averaging less than 9 disposals a game, twice gaining 11 touches, far from tearing it up. But I do like the cut of his jib

No worries I'm not here to sing Fogarty's praises - just thought McKay might have more mongrel in him and hunger for it. He was dropped for very good reason(s).

You don't ignore drafting a player because you already have that type of player. If you can upgrade then you upgrade.

SOS has picked a heap of young tall defenders, not to play them all but to hopefully find a couple out of that group, pick the best ones and go with them.

He's done the same with tall forwards. Casboult is the mature aged player, gives us some quality, depth and doesn't force us to play young players. Then there is Kerr, Curnow, DeKoning and McKay. Curnow is a tick, he's in the bank but none of the rest are. We would be looking to find another tall forward and hope one of them might turn into a good ruckman, maybe.

At some point in time you find your two tall forwards and your ruckmen and then you either keep the leftovers as depth if they are good and cheap enough or you delist or trade them.

We are still looking for a second tall forward of quality so if we get the chance to pick one who is better than what we have then we do that. Then all focus goes into other areas. Doesn't matter if we think the others will make it, if we get the chance to pick one who is or at least will be better then we do it.

With Curnow being a gun and McKay, Kerr and Dekoning showing potential we have gone from major focus for tall forwards to moderate focus for tall forwards.

Best case scenario if we draft a gun tall forward is we have Curnow and another gun tall. Perhaps McKay or Dekoning become a gun ruck or they become genuine trade bait or quality depth. That's generally what Premiership sides have hiding in their reserves and where we need to be to get there.

We need mids, absolutely but if there is a once in a generation type key forward there then grab him. We'll get our mids another way and another time.

I agree , the trouble Murph has had the last 12 months or so it takes him 6-7 games to get match fit but hasn't been able to string games together to do that due to injury imo.
Edit
Also playing a more of an inside role bangs him up a bit more.
He did kind of win the best and fairest last year you know...

Not sure why people keep saying he's banged up either TBH...the guy won our best and fairest last year as our best player and I'm pretty sure played every game.

He suffers a foot injury he's never had before this year and suddenly his body can't go on at afl level in some people's eyes.
Is this a different foot thing from the thing he had in 2016? Didn't he hurt it in the freo game that year?

This is the problem … he should never have been played as an inside mid! The guy has elite running and awesome disposal (when given time). Great field vision and highly creative. He was forced from the get go to be an inside mid.

Smurph never had the frame to do this role. CFC caned his body by forcing him to play a role that he "learned". In another team, like Hawthorn in the same era, he would have been a devastating outside mid (IMHO better than Gaff), that hits the scoreboard.
It was actually after we had 'Leading Teams' come in and the players had free reign to critique each other and he was told he doesnt go in hard enough.

I remember (vaguely) an interview where he said this surprised him but that he would make it a focus to go in harder. Something to that effect anyway, i don't remember too clearly.

Fully aware ! Im not having ago at Murph like I've stated !Hes been played out of his position as an inside mid and gets smashed ! last year he had gibba for support . If he's our link man between wing Hhf he would be much better value and would add 2/3 to his career imo.

Yes, you'd spot on. We forced him into a role he's unsuited for due to necessity. One of the worst smashing he received was by a mature age Lions player in his fist year Smurf has always been courageous, very talented footballer and great servant of the CFC.

Yeah but....

He don’t take a backward step, that’s been established since game one.

Couldn’t name one of our boys that has done that.
Williamson... didn't take a step back when we took it up to the Dawks last year!

This is what I have heard through the grape vine:

1. We are seeking to get Gaff and Wines.
1.1 The club is willing to offer, for Wines, our first this year and next for Wines, Ports first this year and next and their third round pick. But only if we get pick 1 this year because Port really want Lukosius.
2. We are looking at Miles from Bitchmond, Wallis from the Mutts and Fiorini, Brodie, and Scrimshaw from GC17.

The club is looking to load up on experienced mids this year.

All from the same source? Any points on the board?

So something like
Wines
2018 pick 11
2018 3rd round
2019 pick 10+
For
2018 pick 1
2019 top 5 pick

Here here! And as such doesnt deserve all this BS about him leaving and how hard he tackles etc etc
Poor tackling is still poor tackling, regardless of history at the club. A one off effort can be excused, unfortunately Murphy has lost the ability to nail players when tackling and it costs the team. Nothing wrong with pointing it out as an issue.

Abusing the bloke for it is an entirely different thing and should be called out for what it is.

Hope he signs on and floats up and down wing to forward . As others have alluded to .

It's been a bad half season but there's a lot of daylight between where we are now and pick 1. Lately we've been fighting out games despite being handicapped by injuries and a few turnover merchants gifting 3-4 goals a game. Here's hoping things improve in the second half, our boys get some serious mojo happening and SOS has to adjust our trade offers accordingly.

If SOS is the tight arse I think he is, our top pick is off the table (unless for an offer too good to refuse). I can understand why people are a little gun-shy about top picks and yes Wines is worth a top pick, but I’d much prefer to utilise free agency where possible. Gaff would be number one on the wish list, followed by Shiel next year. All of a sudden we would have serious quality and depth through the middle.
Realistically we arent going to get those targets .
Shiel maybe an outside chance given he was a blueboy growing up .
Id suggest Cam Guthrie is a more realistic target at this stage of our development if he is available .
Not sure whats happening with him at Geelong but i think he's a nice player and would give Cripps a welcome hand in the midfield being an inside/outside player with plenty of toe .

I don't want to be rude, but seriously if someone thinks we are a better team without Murphy they don't know much about our team or football in general.

It's just such an outrageously incorrect assertion it boggles my mind.

Murphy in form is an absolute gun.
I think that. But you disagree. I will refrain from attacking your football knowledge. Murphy is highly skilled but pulls out of contests. I don’t want SPS around that sort of stuff. Plain fact- we have played better without him on the ground this year. Arguably (my argument) it will be better for our team going forward if we part ways. And play the ball not the man. I know something about football. I have played under, with and against our current senior coach.

'The AGE' says Wines preference is Demons.
That’s fine so Gaff is still available then.
Extrapolating, Gaff was a Melbourne supporter and has been weighing up options, with the advertised info
that success is an integral part of his decision.

The recent "change of heart" (indecision) from Wines may be the result of an offer from a club firmly in a
"window" after being politely declined by the Free Agent.

Melbourne has a wealth of inside types, but perhaps looking at a succession plan for Jones.
