I was chatting with Tim recently, picking his brain over some thoughts around 'what clubs actually look for', and he mentioned that it's "probably been a while since we last did a Q&A - let's do it again"

For those that missed the last one - Tim works for Stride, manages Lachie Neale (amongst many other young bucks in the AFL, and some soon to be) and is a ripping bloke. A few years ago he was kind enough to openly answer any question we could think of about the players, management, life, football and the clubs

For us pundits, it's a great opportunity to gain insights from someone in industry, who has a refreshing view that is quite different to what you see in the media

My three questions for Tim to kick this off -

• does a team going through a rebuild represent greater opportunity to a player manager?
  
• what is it that you see in a young player that makes you want to represent them? (aka - what do you look for)
• what's the deal with so many of your guys playing for Geelong? is there something you're not telling us?

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Maybe an easier one. How often do you speak to a club for a player with an existing contract? So a 3 year contract in their first or second year? Obviously more in their final year.

What talks happen with a senior player still at the club (like Danyle Pearce) when the club is clearly going in a different direction?

Have clubs ever considered doing extreme contracts like in the US?

Eg: For a superstar - $10 million over 20yrs. Knowing that the player will only play for 6 of those years. Allowing a large portion of the contract to be spread out over non-playing years. Knowing that by then the cap will be higher.

Tim, do you think any damage has been done to our potential to recruit or retain players (established) due to the alleged issues surrounding our coach off the field.

Do clubs ever talk with players directly about contracts, even if only casually, with out their manager? Or is it considered extremely taboo like having a lawyer present etc?

And, do you think free agency is becoming irrelevant with all the player movements? Should they lower the age limit or scrap it altogether?

Three questions, all of which might be more for the AFL but massively impacts a manager’s role:

Will the AFL allow clubs to trade player’s contracts while the player is still in contract?

Will the AFL do away with the compensation for losing a free agent, allowing the mechanism to be a proper concept of free agency?

Will the initial term for early (first and second) round kids drafted increase from two to three or four years? Or will clubs have an option to extend the initial two year contract by one or two years to protect the value should said player request a trade away early on in their career.

How often are contracts front and back loaded? Can it change during the contract? To what extent is the loading, for example could it be 50% year 1, then 25% years 2 and 3, or is it a bit closer to 40%, 30%, 30?

How did clubs and managers operate without know the latest CBA? Were contracts done on percentage of salary cap, or an assumption that the cap would increase by 20%, and did some clubs like Port keep contract under the old CBA
