JL could be a prodigious talent....
Shiel is! Let’s not under rate the influence bringing a 25 year old GUN midfielder at the peak of his powers into our team will have.
Not only to the football performance but also to the all round strength of the club, on and off the field.
If it is pick one, change will be coming back our way.
Trust in the talent we have in your Key position youth.
This potential trade makes a lot of sense on a lot of fronts for us.
Especially after Nth Melb striking out over and over again. Shows us as being attractive

If we end up with pick 1, this is how we should play it imo:

- Trade pick 1 nice and early (1st or 2nd day of trade window opening) for a package of first rounders (Adelaide most likely), maybe sending one of our second-round picks back.
- Only after pick 1 is gone does Shiel publicly request a trade to Carlton.
- Send one of the newly acquired first-round picks to GWS (or next year's first), use other first rounders to draft best mids.

My preference is not to trade for Shiel at all but as others keep pointing out if he wants to make the move now there's not much we can really do.

GWS has a player Carlton wants - Shiel (Marchbank)
GWS demand we give them a first rounder, assuming they will get our first pick #1 (#5)
We end up trading in an extra first rounder from Adelaide (Geelong)
We give that to GWS instead, giving them their 1st rounder but managing to get our player AND draft a decent 1st round mid - eg Smith (SPS)

Hmmmm, where have I heard this before?

GWS ended up with #7 and #7 for Treloar, and gave #28 back. Not sure one first rounder will be enough.

But Treloar was younger? We got #10 and #16 for Gibbs and gave up a 4th rounder and a 2nd and 3rd round downgrade.

We have 3 things in our favour here though. GWS salary cap, the probability that they want someone in the top 2 of the draft, Shiel being a free agent next year.

Yes, Shiel means we lose 7 years of service compared to a draftee. Mind you, the development is already done so we can't stuff that up. Our top draft pick may take 3-4 years to come on, depending on position though so it is really only 3 years or so we miss out on. We also get the benefit of improved performance, quicker development of younger best 22 players as they have more support around them, and potentially look more attractive to other trade targets going forward. Our memberships and sponsorships will improve with better performance as well.

Yes, Lukosius may play 300 games and kick 1000 goals. He might. The intangibles are that he may not have done that for us. We may have lost a couple of promising youngsters whose patience ran out. We may have wasted most of Cripps' career as we did with Judd. The net loss for us may be far greater than the career of Lukosius. Of course, if Shiel fails and we don't improve the reverse could be true. They will always be uncomparable to any reasoned person who is not looking in the rear vision mirror.

I'll support the club's decision on this no matter what they decide.

I can't get my head around Shiel actually leaving GWS this year.

To me, it seems patently clear that the GWS boys have set themselves this year and next year as a group in their prime to compete for their coveted premiership.

After that, all bets are off for that club imo.

I'd be shocked if Shiel up and leaves before the end of 2019.

Well, I'm sold.

Have any ice to sell me? Yours, Eskimo.

Or
A bashed up washed up 27/28yo Cripps as against a well managed beast with still plenty to offer ...

I see what your saying, but no reason why we can't get some senior mature bodies in to support Crippa via free agency or trading our second rounders whilst keeping our first pick.

Up fwd or in the mid, Cripps isn't gonna go in soft and change the way he plays, Sheil next to him or not. He LOVES a contest !

They will have major headaches resigning in 2019 …

Shiel
Kelly
Himmelberg
Tomlison
Hopper
De boer
Lobb
Coniglio

Those eight names are gunna take some serious dollars not to walk.

In 4 years would we want a 22 year old walsh or Luko coming into their prime with the rest of the group or a 30 year old Sheil ?

We shouldn't sell the farm for a 26 year old, no matter how good! If he was 22/23 years old, thats a different story !
In 4 years time there is no Murphy, Simpson, Thomas, Rowe, Casboult ... Kreuzer would be on his last legs if still playing, and Ed might be the only one still around.

Deboer? Delisted by heavo ho freo Deboer?

If they don't look like challenging they are in strife to retain those guys. I'm sure the AFL will give them cola 2.0 to help at that stage.

To clarify on the rumor that I posted re: the Bulldogs

1. The source is a former player from the 1990's
2. The favorite son is Rohan Smith
3. I have since clarified that the position the club allegedly want him for is higher than the one he serves at the Dogs. Rohan is the current Development Manager at the Dogs. Therefore, logically, it has to be a management position.

To vouch for the reputation of my source: The last time that I got any sort of 'rumor' from this bloke was him telling me that the Dogs would draft Lachie Hunter with a third round selection as a father-son pick. This was months before the draft and he was a relatively big name draftee. I shared that news on the Dogs board back then.

In my opinion, it would take something special to get Smith away from the Dogs. He was at the Pies and the Dogs worked their asses off to get him back to the club. The Pies absolutely loved him and were loathe to let him leave.

The only speculation that I can add is that

A. I was told on the same day as Andrew McKay announcing he was leaving the club
B. Rohan Connelly has suggested that we have our target firmly in our sights and that he is presently at another club

It would tie those together but have also heard that we're after Chris Bond (edit: that was also posted here by another poster, so there's likely to be multiple sources on that one) and someone (haven't got a name) currently at Richmond that Lidle is attempting to poach.

Another (full) preseason and 5 or so kgs onto McKay, plus a midfield led by Cripps and Shiel feeding him, and no one will care about a skinny 18 year old KPF who may or may not be good in 2022.

I think we'll know whether McKay is the one by the end of the season anyway, so it could be a very easy decision if it plays out that way.
Imo they have full confidence in him now.
Otherwise they would be pumping the games into him to make it clear for themselves as to whether they go with Lukosius or not if as i expect we finish last .
Leads me to think its Walsh/Smith or trading pick 1 .

Way closer to 750K than 900K.

As much as I am loathe to get Shiel (if we're giving up pick 1 this year) if we let it go to next year it'd be closer to 1 mil than 750k. The only way that changes is if Shiel has his heart set at being at Carlton and knows that we need to preserve some salary cap space to guarantee him the best opportunity at a premiership. It wouldn't surprise me if we got him this year he'd be looking at 850k.

Agreed. I expect we will give him something like this but don't think he is worth that much personally.
