The GIANTS are delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Kingsley as the club’s next AFL head coach.

As a former Premiership and Best and Fairest winner with Port Adelaide, where he played 170 games, Kingsley quickly moved into coaching following his playing career, immediately taking up assistant coaching roles with Port Adelaide and then St Kilda. After eight years with the Saints, Kingsley joined Richmond as assistant coach in 2019 where he played a leading role in the Tigers’ last two Premierships.

GIANTS Chief Executive Officer David Matthews said Kingsley's appointment marked the next chapter in the evolution of the football club. “On behalf of the Board and our entire organisation, I’m thrilled to confirm Adam Kingsley as our new head coach,” Mr Matthews said. “After a thorough and considered selection process, Adam’s vision for the club, our players and our people made him the standout candidate for the job. Adam has outstanding values that align with the GIANTS and with 16 years’ coaching experience he is an exceptional tactical coach, a strong, clear communicator, and someone who brings people together. In our 11 years in the competition we have undoubtedly become a successful club with a fantastic culture and a great playing list. But we haven’t been satisfied with our recent results. We - and Adam - believe success isn’t far away and we’re thrilled to have him lead us into our next chapter as a club. This is an incredibly exciting day for our club and Adam's appointment will not only take our playing group and football department forward but will help continue to grow our game across NSW and the ACT. We look forward to welcoming Adam, his wife Nadine and children Cayla, Ethan and Raf to the GIANTS family.”

Mr Matthews also paid tribute to caretaker coach Mark McVeigh. "We thank Mark for his efforts as interim senior coach and the tireless work he has contributed to our program since taking over in round 10,” Mr Matthews said. “It’s a difficult job to come in as caretaker coach but he attacked the role with fresh ideas and sought to improve our players, staff and program at every step. Mark is a person of the highest integrity and character, and he has always put the club first. He was steadfast in leaving the program ready for whoever would be taking over.”

Following an extensive interview process, Kingsley was deemed the best fit for the GIANTS by the club’s interview panel that consisted of Mr Matthews, Chairman Tony Shepherd AO, Football Director Jimmy Bartel and General Manager of Football Jason McCartney. Kingsley said he was honoured to have the opportunity to coach the club for the next three years. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” he said. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be the next senior coach of the GIANTS. I’ve been clear in my aspirations to become a senior coach and over the last 16 years I’ve continued to learn and develop to the point now where I’m absolutely ready to take the next step in my coaching career. This is a club which has built a strong culture from the ground up in just a few short years. In just 11 years the GIANTS have made multiple preliminary finals, and a Grand Final, and while the ultimate success has eluded the club, it’s clear the building blocks are in place. It's clear the players, staff, members and fans are hungry for success, and we’re going to drive each other to get to where we want to go. I believe in this club and what we can achieve together.”

Kingsley played 170 games for Port Adelaide between 1997 and 2006 and was a member of the club’s inaugural team as well as their first Premiership in 2004. He won the Power’s club champion award in just his second season. In 2007, he became an assistant coach at Port Adelaide, a position in which he stayed in until the end of 2010. Kingsley joined St Kilda at the end of the 2010 season as an assistant coach before moving to Richmond in 2019.

Think we are entering sack the coach territory very soon.

I think the players are going through the motions and waiting for it to happen. It’s not as though they aren’t trying hard, but I think there is some spark, some belief that things are going to work out, which is missing.

4-5-1 probably isn’t severe enough for the club to do something but I feel the signs are bad.

We are in it. Have shown nothing this year.

Only time we were dominant was with the Dogs who were self destructing at the time.

The thread to this tells me he has no clue in how to turn it around.

No plan B.

I thought the game was lost when we busted a gut all through the 2nd and 3rd quarters for a grand total of 5.6 to 3.6.

In the last 3 comfortable losses, in each case I50s and contest wins have been about equal.

No system going forward. Win an intercept - then think about it for 10 seconds and launch a slow high kick down the line.

Leon, the problem won’t be solved by telling the players they didn’t work hard enough for long enough...

We used to use the ball faster than other teams could think up a defense.
Made us deadly on the counter.

They now appear afraid to act.
We spent so long in our fwd 50 last night and did stuff all with it

More criticism will be coming the way of the club and the players but I am a believer in the group and the coach as I have stated before the reasons for the poor form are
Lack of experienced assistants, maybe McConnell is not the right person to have in the box with Cameron (old school?)
Loss of experience at the end of last year
Loss of depth through trading out of so many players after being on the list for 1/2/3 years/Wasted draft picks (McKenna/others)
Poor form of senior players
Lack of leadership on field
Injuries to key players
Lack of development of 1/2 year players because of injury forcing players to play in multiple roles in the NEAFL Sproule playing defence/mid/forward will develop skills but he will play forward if he makes the AFL so he needs to spend time their and dominate and should be kicking 2+ goals every week to make a claim for selection. That is just one example and I am sure their are others i could come up with

the Toffees, the Bays.
Leon has now got 4 in a row. All coached from the bench, leaving the boys upstairs with the tactics.
That's admirable by Leon, it shows a team culture in the coaches department; it seems to be working.
Two more wins from the next 3 games and he's officially turned it all around.

I hope so and if he does turn it around and we get up i will happily admit I was wrong.

But look at what clubs we have in front of us to play compared to who we just beat the last 3 weeks.

The adelaide win being the best of them, all games showed the same problems we have had all year and last year. Barely beating the lions and hawks even though we showed large periods of dominance especially in the hawks game. Obviously our defense is an issue but to me the biggest problem is just lack of conversion of our opportunities. Who cares if Hawks get 80 points if we get 140. Which we should have in that game imo. Should have been a 60pt win.

Going forward we need to improve defense by getting the right players, no doubt, but the players we do have can play a high scoring game and we need to make sure we get those players converting all the chances they are getting.

I think some experience in the line coaches would be a good thing so am all for chasing some of the options coming out of the south

As an observation, I chuckle to myself now that we have some wins under the belt and reflect on the number of #leonout posts there were on here when the chips were down. As a supporter i thought we were fickle in out criticism- we go to back to back prelims and it only took a month of poor footy to turn on the coaching staff.

Can we get better? Yes, but who couldn't?

Still stand by my thoughts on Leon at the time. I backed/defended him all the way previously and this year he doesn't seem to have improved any.

We shall see soon if he can get them over the line or not. Would be happy to be proven wrong.

Yep
It's actually usual for club boards to have threads critical of the coach, :Dexcept the Hawks board where'd I'm sure the mods would try and go after your family if you tried. There's usually a standard of decorum though, andI doubt most board mods would allow vitriole.

Some of the abuse of Leon and the club genuinely shocked me. I can't see how a person with a modicum of integrity could claim to be a supporter of the club having said some of the things that were said. On Twitter and Facebook it was much more get around the club, which is what I'd expect. Emotional reactions happen but retractions aren't that hard either.

Lol @ the Hawthorn comment.

Me too. It genuinely worries me because it was honestly just a bad month of football. Imagine what it will be like when things aren't going well? Disappointing that U r correct, that the Facebook community (which I rarely look at as they irritate me) were much more willing to dig in and get around the club.

Anyway, glad its over

Would support the club picking up an experienced assistant coach and even if it is for 2/3 years if they come from another system with some success they will add to the coaching group and I think ease the load on Cameron
Whether Nicks is the right person I don’t know but seven years at port will bring the required experience IMO
Not sure who else would be available that would bring what the club needs

The GIANTS are pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Nicks as senior assistant coach for the 2019 season.
Nicks joins the GIANTS after eight years at Port Adelaide, where he has spent the last two seasons as senior assistant coach under Ken Hinkley.
The 43-year old was one of the inaugural participants in the AFL’s Level Four Coaching program, which was designed to prepare assistant coaches looking to take the next step to a senior coaching role in the AFL.

Hopefully gives Leon some help and confidence to get back up to the box.

Coaching from the sideline is something you do as a point of difference but not every week.

Fingers crossed Nicks is a positive.
