In other words, in driving parlance. Drive to conditions.
Of course.

Don't you have daughters HHH? Would you instruct them to walk through isolated places in the late night-early morning hours?

FFS, I scope back at blokes I walk past under the same circumstances.

Not sure what I'd advise. You can't stop people living their lives. It's dark @ 530 in Melbourne now FFS.

But I do the exact same thing and nearly every male I'm sure does. And I use the term male as we tend to know they're just too many unhinged violent *******s around where you can't feel safe. Telling people they are free to walk around whenever is batshit insane. You have to take care. While we all wish it wasn't the case it very much is.

To buy more alcohol to make the problem worse? No way!

For starters government benefits should be credit loaded on a card that is only good for buying certain items, not cash to buy booze, drugs etc.

Social programs of some kind to get kids surrounded by more positive, successful people.

Like priests ? Or moombah Celebs ?
Or movie directors ? Or uncle Charlie ....
Whites meddling in the world is the problem , then technology , then people who think there kind gesture is some ticket to enlightment .
Fact your wishes don't come true .

What's a successful person thou? As the person above alluded to many of the above occupations were once considered successful yet abused their power.

Yep, two girls and it won't be too long before they oldest is out and about on her own or with friends.

One thing I'm actually drumming into their heads now when we're in the car together is if they ever end up in a car with a driver who is driving like an idiot for whatever reason and you want to get it, if they won't stop for you, tell them you're going to throw up in their car. Watch how quick they stop. Then get out and call either myself, if I'm home, or their mother.

Am curious. Are you being ironic or arguing something like a UBI could help?

No. I am pointing out that socio economic factors in crime require socio economic solutions.

It's not that I walk around scared but darkness + isolation are circumstances that require some basic vigilance in my case, and should be outright avoided in the case of women.

What thou is the million dollar question? And even then peoples attitudes tend to get entrenched at a young age and don't really change. Or do they?

No behaviour can be stated to be irrevocably entrenched, it's just that poor socio economic factors bring a lot of added pressures.

But if we take this to it's logical conclusion, what are women left with? They face more risk of violence from a partner than a stranger, so should they outright avoid romance? I've known several women who have been attacked or made to feel unsafe in Ubers or taxis - should those modes of transports be avoided? Public transport late at night is dodgy for everyone, so avoid that? I recognise that there are inherent risks in certain things and you need to be vigilant but flat out saying women can't do something is totally shirking the issue when we should be working hard as we can to ensure they CAN do those things, or at least aren't looked upon as architects of their own demise if they do so and encounter violence.

We're left with dealing with the realities of the world, and nothing is bullet proof for anyone. At the end of the day we can only address the odds. Female + early hours + isolation = potentially bad odds.

Public transport has it's risks for women, depending on the time and point of entry/exit, but taxis and ubers are generally safe modes of transport.

Any woman or minor that is ever in my company personally after hours is driven or escorted to their residence. I suggest all responsible men conduct themselves in the same manner.

The issue there then is how is a woman to know which man is safe to get in a car with late at night? Last week, for instance, I was at a party and a girl there got way too drunk and is currently unemployed so couldn't afford an Uber. She lives near me so I offered to give her a lift home, which she accepted. We'd met that night. That story could easily have ended badly if I were a creep but I was just doing what I thought was right. To a woman's eyes, taking in the inherent risks and your comment on odds, this scenario seems to pit the two "solutions" against one another and leave a massive grey area. IE. Men should act responsibly and take care for the women around them whenever possible but given the threat we can impose, how are women to know which ones of us to trust?

There are clearly no easy answers for this but I really, really dislike the notion of simply shrugging and saying "Women can't do this now." Telling half the world's population they can't do something because we apparently can't come up with a solution to fighting the small percentage of monsters in the world just seems so defeatist and sad.

They can only be reasonably sure if they know and consider the male safe, or are utilising a professional driver with a paper trail attached to them.

Of course, and the overwhelming majority do, but there is no way to guarantee that every man acts this way, in the same sense that males can never guarantee that they will not be betrayed by a woman.

I don't like the calls to stop telling women to be careful, teach men not to rape etc.

Those men already know it's against the law, they know it's against the rules and they break them.

There are unknown, unfixed monsters out on the street and anyone who wants to absolve themselves of personal responsibility because the world should live up to an idealised standard is crazy.

Humans are animals.

It's not sensible to stop telling women to be careful, we all have to make judgements every day about personal safety, what we do where we go who we associate with. If we didn't life would be impossible.

Most rapes go unreported if I remember the stats correctly, I imagine big numbers out there who have got away with it when the assault hasn't ended in murder, for one reason or another. Some or a lot of those reasons might be a woman's inappropriate self blame and shame.

I run at night as part of rehab regime, hate having eyes on me when I train. Really hate it. Vigilant, dont run with both ear buds in, or pink shorts, sometimes take a dog etc etc and I'm not going to stop even though I'm aware some might think it's reckless. Personal, I've had trouble before and it came into my house, between the walls. I actually prefer my chances out in the open.

Humans are animals, true that.

The 1950s called they want their car back

Instead of trying to find fault with women who choose to live independently* why not strategise around making everybody safe. If you dont feel safe then make it safe. Stop telling the females how to behave and start telling your mates and men in general how to behave

*independently means making the choices to walk , drive and congregate wherever they choose

I run at night too for the same reason, I want to be in my own little world, except I do run with earbuds and a sense of dread that someone is hiding in every bush and around every corner.

I run twice as fast and see nobody.

Choices have consequences.
We are emotionally unstable, violent animals living in close proximity without familial or social ties.
The choice of language by me here has to be very careful otherwise my entire point can be dismissed on grounds of one sentence appearing to blame a victim.
As long as there is a need for prison, there won't be free and safe communities for people to move about at all hours of the day and night.
There are predators out there. There is evil in the darkness and it knows what it does is wrong, but it will still do it. You need to be smart enough to outwit it, you know it targets solitary women in dark places.

Don't treat men like they are the problem. Men are human. Monsters aren't.

It's not who you see , it's who sees you that's the key .
As old mate points out above the lad possibly is autistic from jabs , see what meddling in society gets you !

I am not one to blame a victim , plenty of others have done that here. I just think the focus needs to be on the men, the predators and finding ways to minimise the darkness. If nobody is safe then everybody is in danger. Predators attack the weak.

What's wrong with calling it out if you see the behaviour? That could go quite some way to making change. Nobody's asking for your testicles.

By 'calling it out' I don't mean by shaming all over social media and trying to make it go viral. Not sure how I feel about that, another discussion maybe. I mean, it can be done quietly 'thats not cool' whatever. A little nudge in the right direction.
