Have a listen to the Santo, Sam & Ed podcast with the lady who worked on our world cup bid. She explains how they were told they would lose by a FIFA exec not long after they signaled their intentions to bid. Basically beIn sport giving FIFA a wad of money as a television contribution only if they awarded it to Qatar made it a done deal

That's the FIFA exec trying to incite a bribe in other words.

Yep. Basically means we'll never get the world cup. The USA with their big TV networks are believed to be ready to back the next US bid with the same sort of arrangement. They mask it as a "broadcast contribution fund"

Disgraceful decision from FIFA to change the date. Should have just stripped it from Qatar. First game to be played on November 21 with the final on December 18.

I’m that fussed on the date change.
Heat and all that.

Just hope it’s a terrific tournament and helps facilitate better behaviours from the whole area.
Democracy would be a great start there.

Just hope we get great matches

Never gonna get democracy in places like Qatar.

Every member nation of FIFA now votes on WC hosts, not the executive committee. Had that arrangement been in place for 2022 I believe we may have won. No way could Qatar buy out a majority of 211 voters.

We really should have targeted cheap mining deals with the governments of the exco members. That was the only way we were going to win the 2022 bid. Instead we tried to win it on technical merit.

I've just thought of this for the first time (as they're pushing for it to be included in Qatar 2022 which sounds like madness - a country that size could barely cope with 32 and a last ditch effort to spread games to UAE and Saudi Arabia is frankly pathetic.).

But.

How do FIFA propose to qualify 32 teams for the knockouts in a 48 team comp?

Apparently they're angling for the Top 2 teams going through which brings up a whole host of problems. (16 groups of 3 teams).

1. Final game 2 teams will know exactly what they need to do to qualify and will no doubt lead to a lot of SCORE DRAWS. Coincidence? I don't think so.

2. So hang on, what if all 3 games are draws - that will leave all 3 teams on 2pts so presumably the highest scoring draw match teams will go through and the other team will miss out. See 1 above.

3. Hang on, so it's possible that from some groups you'll have 2 teams qualifying for the next round that haven't won a game! Ha, ridiculous.. Particularly when you consider the next (and most important) point.

4. In a a group in which A beats B, B beats C, and C beats A. One of the teams will finish third and inevitably miss out. In fact, it's even possible this team will have a neutral goal difference and miss out on goals scored to the other two teams.

What does this mean?

It means that a team that is 1 Win & 1 Loss (3pts) potentially with a For (5 goals) and Against (5 goals) will go home while another team potentially with 0 Wins & 2 Draws (2pts) potentially with a For (1 goal) and Against (1 goal) will go through. It's even possible that team could score no goals and concede no goals and go through (if all the teams in the group play in three score-less draws and the Top 2 goes to Red Cards & Yellow Cards - See Japan & Senegal in 2018 World Cup for how that works).

Clearly farcical. And yet - it seems almost inevitable something like this, or close to this, will almost certainly happen (perhaps multiple times) at a 48 Team World Cup.

The solution is pretty obvious.

16 Group Winners go through & 16 'Next' Best performed teams regardless of groups. So you'll end up with some groups only having 1 qualifier, some having 2, and some having 3. And so what if it's uneven like this?

What do people think?

yep no point whinging about it anymore Qatar 2022 is happening! eventually everyone will have to accept and accommodate for it that includes the big European leagues!

What will stop it is Trump's war on Iran set for 2019. The blowback across the Gulf will see the stadiums lit up as primary targets.

This will bring forward USA/Mexico/Canada to 2022 and leave 2026 open for Asia to re-bid.....

Will it be Qatar though? Or will it be China?

Who is more lucrative?!?!?!

An aside

Does anyone think Argentina is plagued by the ongoing and ongoing and ongoing maradonna presence.

Maybe he should be retired?

Just asking.

Not really Saintly. They made three finals in 14,15,16. Should be winning at least one. Had the lottery of penalties too in both Coppa's and a man advantage in 2016 before a dumb campaigner player of their own got sent off. They just choked.

Messi couldn't handle the big stage when it TRULY mattered in International football.

That's a far fetched prediction mate I think you have to stop believing the scaremongering media.

If for some slim reason Qatar can't hold or FIFA will strip the tournament off them depending how close to 2022 it gets stripped I doubt FIFA will open it to bidding. They'll probably put out an expressions of interest to the AFC or any other confederation like they did back in 86 when Colombia forfeited the Tournament. I doubt any Asian countries will take up the offer at such short notice even China who probably will not want to host a Tournament until they are at least competitive enough to win it or get close too winning it or at least a big player on the World stage! atm they are crap! and that ain't gonna change within the next four years!
My guess will be FIFA will play it safe and just give it to one of the big European country, e.g England or the UK to share it will be a good choice, or Span/Portugal. etc.. I very much doubt it will come to that through.

To be fair he single-handedly got them to this World Cup, which was a fair indication of how ordinary this side was. The World Cup before he won player of the tournament in reaching the final. In 2010 they had the catastrophe that was Maradona as a manager. If they’d just had a semi competent manager they could’ve had a shot then. And his first World Cup they were knocked out on penalties by host nation Germany. In reality he’s probably overachieved at world cups given the squads and managers he’s gone with.

Fifa seem to have a thing about putting the world cup in really homophobic countries. Qatar still has the death penalty for being gay and Fifa have chosen to give it a s**t ton of media attention. Disgusting.

Travellers planning long-haul journeys in the run-up to Christmas 2022 face much higher fares due to the World Cup, The Independent has been told.

After the success of the World Cup 2018 in Russia, the next global football tournament will be held in the tiny Gulf state in four years’ time.

Due to the extreme heat in June and July, the competition has been shifted to November and December, with the final to be held just one week before Christmas.

Qatar Airways, as the national carrier, has made commitments to Fifa for operating flights for officials, teams and media. The usual pattern in a World Cup host nation is for a massive surge in demand for departures in the two or three days after the final, which will be on 18 December.

Normally at this time of year, Qatar’s hub at Doha is extremely busy with travellers from Britain and the rest of Europe connecting for flights to Asia, Africa and Australasia over Christmas and the New Year.

Akbar Al Baker, chief executive of Qatar Airways, warned that other airlines will exploit his carrier’s commitments to Fifa to raise fares for such passengers.
