If it's the last possession out of bound rule that the SANFL have, it works well. It's only awarded if it's off a clear boot or handpass. If in doubt, it's a throw in. If shepherded out, it's a throw in. Players deliberately getting the ball onto an opposing boot for a free doesn't happen.

Since you mentioned it --- in the first quarter of the PA v Richmond game the Ch7 twerps mentioned Richmond's loss to Adelaide.
BT rambled on about "when Adelaide were playing better back then" (yeah, after folding to Essendon the game before) and "had a full side" (not quite) and "Round One, I think".

I've often thought a half circle from point post to point post would be a good replacement for the "goal square".

Love this , great idea, would have a radius of about 9.6m. Maybe 12m would be even better?

If you drop the ball in a tackle and you've had prior opportunity (eg. taken on a tackler, tried a fend off/side step), it should be holding the ball. None of this "ball was knocked free/spilled out" rubbish. If you didn't kick it or handball it, you're done.

If the player has time to attempt the fend, turn/spin/side-step, or is attempting to raise his arms so they're free after the tackle, should ALL be HTB.
Likewise when a player takes possession and then just braces for the oncoming tackle. More often than not it's just a time-waster. If an opponent takes possession, the point of tackling is not to dispossess or create a bounce; it's to nab them with the ball and get the free.

My post was in reply to your total lack of understanding of what the rule actually is and how it works. It’s got nothing to do with how the opening post misrepresents the rule, I’ve covered that previously.

This was amusing, from that article:

Not to mention that at the moment, 15m varies hugely depending on where on the field the ball is and what stage of the game it is, and that 15m when kicking is about half as long as 15m when running and bouncing.

There was a time when the minimum distance was 2 yards (1.8m) so not without precedent, I think the VFL increased it to be different in 1897.

Congestion at centre bounce I don't believe is an issue. Look at the Melbourne v Essendon game I think it was a few weeks back, with high number of goals in the first half. Not too much congestion as it re-set to centre bounce after each goal. The issue is ball ups around the ground. I think this won't address the issue.

Call the rules as they stand verbatim for a season and see what happens. The idiots will be surprised...

Stuff that I'd like to see ...

- 6 on the bench and unlimited interchanges
- starting zones at centre bounces only (6-6-6) and I'd force the wings to start level with the centre
- destroy the 3rd man up ruck rule completely
- clock stops when mark / free is paid - starts again at play-on / disposal (might need to reduce quarter length to 15mins + time on)
- circle from point post to point post instead of goal square for kick-ins - ie a goal circle - also allow rushed behinds under pressure inside the circle.
- last disposal out of bounds rule - maybe allow a kick to touch from inside defensive 50m to outside defensive 50m
- get rid of video score review, put a goal umpire on each goal post
- 17-5 fixture
