Sigh. I feel like it goes without saying, but if you're an opposition (Collingwood) fan looking to come over and get into a fight about Maynard's bump/tribunal case (again), go elsewhere.

No more warnings, cards will be handed out. Please read the room.

Probably what the wait was about. Instead of 2 years at 500 it's probably more like 4 at 300k. Means that his future is safe guarded re concussion.

Surely he wouldn't sign four years unless there is a bit of coin there. Reckon we would be paying him at least 450k a year now, maybe with a games played clause or something like that.

That’s not the way they’re leaning at the moment. Shorter length more cash, longer = job security for player but lower coin. Unless they’re a marquee signing like Buddy or Dusty.

Blokes played 10 really good games in his career to this point. As much as we wanted to keep him if you paid everyone that kind of money we would be over the cap.

$300k is just the average AFL salary though, no? I'd be surprised if that's all he'd sign for especially with some enquiry from rival clubs. Not saying he's just become one of our top 5 paid players but think he'll be well looked after.

****ed if I know mate lol but considering that if he gets knocked unconscious again it could be the end of his career I reckon a guaranteed 1.2 over 4 is decent. Could be say an extra 5k per game played or something but the caps only what.. 12 million? Between Hogan and Tmac that's like 1.5 gone already.

There probably isn't a black and white answer to this but has enough time passed for Brayshaw to be in the 'safety zone' re concussion?

If I could get 1.2mil over 4 years, I consider it pretty decent!

Looking at the breakdown of league salaries from last year, I'd think that he'd get between 300-400k, probably closer to 400 with safeguards/clauses for concussion.

There's no way Brayshaw isn't making at least $450k. Sure he's got concussion concerns but we don't get away with paying him $300k when other clubs would definitely have been knocking with significantly better offers. His body of work is small but his best performances suggest top 20 midfielders in the comp type potential.

So using the above link, assuming a list size of 44 and if you take the 2017 AFL averages, each club has this many players per category on average:

$ Players per category
0-100k 2.4
101-200k 9.5
201-300k 8.8
301-400k 9.3
401-500k 5.6
501-600k 3.3
601-700k 2.1
701-800k 1.4
801-900k 0.3
901-1m 0.7
1m+ 0.6

There should be around 8 players per club on more than 500k per year. Gus should be top 8?

Given what we know:

- Hogan
- TMac
- Gawn
- Lever
- Jones?

Question is who are the other three. Hibb maybe.

i think Gawn, Lever, T.mac, Viney, Oliver, Hogan, Jones and Lewis would be at the top end of the contracts, so Gus would probably be right in behind them imo. Jones and Lewis likely had front loaded contracts as well i'd say, but at the end of the day i'm only guessing.

Great analysis, and hopefully this will put a few people straight who consistently undervalue what players get paid.

Yeah I think you'd be right. The other thing I forgot to take into account is the salary cap rises every year so 450k+ is a strong possibility.

Doubt Gus would be on over $500k. Still young and hasn’t proven he can perform consistently year after year. Reckon he’ll be on around the $400k a year mark and during this contract he can prove he is worth the much bigger money if he he establish himself as one of the best players at the club.

I’d forgotten that in the past only young players who’ve proven they can perform consistently have gotten big contracts :p

From memore Lewis wasn't on a big contract. Something along the lines of $1m-$1.2m over 3 years.

The reason why he wasn't on a big deal was because of the security of a 3rd year in his deal
