The Penrith Panthers have sacked coach Anthony Griffin just four weeks out from the finals.

The Panthers notified Griffin on Monday afternoon that his services would not be required beyond the end of this season despite being contracted until the end of 2020.

Griffin in turn walked away from the job, leaving assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo as the caretaker for the rest of the season.

It's understood Penrith have made the decision to part ways with Griffin because of a belief he is unable to take the club to a premiership.

There's probably a really interesting story here. Well never hear it because Phil Gould has a finger in every ******* pie. Nine and Fairfax won't touch it.

You know you’re in trouble when league fans turn on you and start trusting journalists for the truth.

That’s the position Phil Gould finds himself in today after repeatedly denying there were problems with Anthony Griffin and then sacking him anyway.

Just four weeks ago, Gus was asked on 100 Per Cent Footy whether Griffin would be Panthers coach until the end of 2020.

Question #1: Is there a falling out between you and Anthony Griffin?

Gould: "No"

Q #2: Anthony Griffin is contracted until the end of 2020, is that the way it’s going to stay?

Gould: "Yeah"

Q #3: Have the players lost faith in Anthony Griffin?

Gould: "No. There are people in the media obsessed with Penrith and they’re obsessed with causing distraction or disruption or whatever it is that turns them on. But it doesn’t hurt us."

On the weekend, Gould was quoted extensively in the Nepean News.

He was again asked about the coaching situation.

"There has been a lot of noise about our coaching situation for the past couple of years but I don’t bother to correct it," he said.

"It’s just noise outside this club. I would see no reason to change things (with the coaching set-up) as time goes on."

By the close of business Monday, Griffin had gone the same way as Matthew Elliott, (interim) Steve Georgallis and Ivan Cleary – unceremoniously shown the door by Gus Gould.

Gould is quick to criticise the media for speaking ‘untruths’ but is he not guilty of the same crime?

Way back in February, the Lurker broke news of a bust-up between Gould and Griffin.

"Tension at Penrith has reached boiling point, with club boss Phil Gould giving coach Anthony Griffin a very public blast midway through Saturday night’s embarrassing 24-10 loss to a second-string Canterbury side.

"Several fans and Bulldogs coaching staff witnessed Gould slam Griffin in the tunnel as the two teams left the field at halftime at Belmore Sports Ground.

"A furious Gould yelled words to the effect of "This looks like a reserve grade outfit… fix it" to Griffin and assistant coach Cameron Ciraldo."

Typically, sycophant fans turned on the Lurker after Gus dumped on the story.

He insisted he had no drama with Hook.

Gould continued to dump on any story or rumour that suggested he was off with the coach, although everyone in the rugby league world knew.

All along he seemed to be channelling legendary former Bulldogs boss Peter Moore, who once famously said: “You never, ever, ever lie …unless it’s absolutely necessary.”

Further to the above, it should be noted that Gould stated that a review undertaken by the board came to the conclusion that Griffin no longer had the respect of the playing group. However, James Maloney, on Sky Sports Radio this morning stated:
1) He still respected Griffin as a coach, and his coaching methods.
and
2) Nobody amongst the playing group can recall being questioned by anyone from the board about how they felt about Griffin as a coach.

Someone here is telling fibs, question is: Who ?

While Bennett was in his first stint as Brisbane coach, Griffin was one of his talent scouts.
Griffin travelled down to Gerringong to check out Korbin Sims, and after a few visits it was decided to sign him up. Sims was 15 at the time.
Griffin signed Sims up for Brisbane, and proceeded to advise Gerringong that if Sims was picked in reserve or first grade, the QRL would sue the club. He then told Group 7 administration that if Sims was picked for their rep teams, the QRL would, once again, see them in court. Had Sims played in those teams, he would've been a NSW Origin rep player. Shortly after, the Broncos flew Sims to Brisbane to check out the facilities. As it was, Northern Suburbs reserve grade had to play a deferred game mid-week, so Griffin, coach of Norths first grade, put Sims, now 16, on the bench for reserve grade. Ta daaa. Instant Queensland rep player.
To this day, Korbin Sims is pissed off about not being able to rep NSW in Origin. Griffin's name is mud in Gerringong and the Group 7 comp in general.
The above, like it or not, are facts. One of the myths we hear at Origin time is the famous Queensland spirit. If the actions of Griffin represent that spirit, then * 'em.
Two rumours that I've heard, but never been able to substantiate:
1) At the end of 2014, when Griffin got rissoled from Brisbane, the squad gave him a signed jersey. Sims wrote on it: "Goodbye and get ****ed"
2) The QRL have unofficially made Sims unavailable for Origin selection due to their "regret" over Griffin's actions.

How could the QRL sue some little club? The Brisbane Broncos aren't the QRL.

My money is on Gus. Spins so much s**t.

The Ivan Cleary backflip is so scheming. How often has a sacked coach ever gone back to manage the team again?

To be fair, that is a pretty, well, minimal statement from Maloney, isn't it? It's a long way short of a ringing endorsement.
 
This mess gets more and more muddy every day.
On Tuesday, Penrith CEO Brian Fletcher told Sky Sports Radio that Gould advised him on Sunday that Griffin had to go. Yesterday, on his Channel 9 podcast, Gould said that two months ago, he saved Griffin from the axe, and on Sunday night, Fletcher instructed him to bone Griffin.
On Monday, Gould announced that nobody had been approached to replace Griffin, out of respect to him, yet then told Channel 9 that a person had been approached and they were waiting for a reply.
Gould yesterday also said that he has not had any communication with Ivan Cleary about returning to Penrith. Yet chairman Dave O'Neill yesterday admitted that he asked Cleary two weeks ago whether he was interested in coaching Penrith next year.
So, either Gould is telling fibs, again, or he, as General Manager of Football, has no say in who runs the football team. And that is not likely.
FWIW, Cleary himself could've done worse than announce what his intentions are, as his silence is deafening.
I wouldn't be surprised if Ciraldo coaches Penrith ( well, he coaches them the way Gould wants them coached ) until 2020, by which time Nathan Cleary has signed a long term contract. Then Ivan steps in from 2021.
If that's the case, how does Ivan Cleary handle recruitment for 2021 for Penrith, while coaching Wests, where he would be expected to be putting their interests first while in charge ?
This is shaping up to be better than The Bold and the Beautiful !

It is reported to have cost the Panthers one million to pay Griffin out of his contract and if they do a deal with Ivan Cleary it will cost them another three million to buy his remaining contract with Wests Tigers out. On top of that there is the behind the scenes spectre of Phil Gould. Would Cleary want to go back to Penrith with Gould looking over his shoulder? If Cleary did return would the Panthers need Gould sitting in the background?
 
The timing was ****ed because Gould knew if they won finals let alone the premiership he wasn't going to be able to get rid of him. Gould has destroyed a season because he wants to be George Lucas and the coach to be Richard Marquand.

Which is why Griffin described Gould as looking dejected when Penrith beat the Dragons 28-2 earlier this year, yet was quite upbeat when they were beaten 50-18 by Brisbane.
