Unsolved National Missing Persons Week

Mums who spend all Christmas Day looking out the window expecting their son to walk up the path. Dads who refuse to update the family car that keeps breaking down in case their daughter sees and recognises it.

  • Sunday marks the launch of National Missing Persons Week for 2018.
  • The AFP are profiling 30 long term missing people to mark the 30th year.
  • A video has been released exploring the impacts on families left behind when a person goes missing.
The register: https://missingpersons.gov.au/search

Profiling 30 but there are 2,600 long term missing persons. Probably more. We know that even women like Karlie Pearce with small children, can go missing. Murdered and they're not even on the register.

Missing people leave frayed edges, stay connected.

Does anybody know of a missing person? I havent personally known one but my uncle goes missing and years pass . Found him in a tavern once and wasnt even looking.

He has little ID and no electronic footprint. Lives in an atco hut and its been a couple of years since I have dropped by (on the other side of Adelaide) so he may well be. Some of the company he keeps may decide he is too drunk one night.

Tony Jones' family say they have crucial evidence to solve cold case
By Brittney Kleyn
Posted1 day ago, updated12 hours ago.

National Missing Persons Week launched by Jones family 30 years ago

"This week marks the 30th anniversary of National Missing Persons Week (NMPW) which was set up by the Jones family so that Tony and others like him would never be forgotten.

Trish Halligan from the National Coordination Centre said these families suffer what is called an ambiguous loss, not knowing whether their loved ones are still alive.

"As human beings we love to know the why, the how," she said.

"When someone goes missing, families don't have these answers. It's very difficult for them to move forward with their lives."

Across the country, the Australian Federal Police are dealing with 2,600 ongoing missing persons cases.

Another 38,000 people are reported missing each year.

Mark Jones said while NMPW had come a long way in strengthening communication between police in different states, grieving families needed more support.

"[It] always just feels like it's never quite enough and whilst it helps people get publicity that they badly need, it doesn't always get the resolution that they need," he said."

One unidentified body in Perth.

Another article about Tony Fahey of Murrembateman.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-...ony-fahey-mother/10075830?WT.ac=statenews_act

Two articles indicate slightly different things. One says

"All she knows is he left their home in Murrumbateman, and was dropped off at a bus stop in Belconnen by his aunt."

Posted from shellyg above says last seen at the Jolimont Centre.

Murrumbateman is a small town just outside of North Canberra. Belconnen has a major bus terminal which would have a direct bus to the city which would be about a 300 metre walk from the Jolimont Centre is. Jolimont Centre is where you catch buses going to Sydney. Not sure if there is proof that he got on the bus.

"Almost a year to the day after mother-of-two Tanja Ebert was reported missing, police have announced a reward for information leading to the recovery of her body.

Her husband, Michael Burdon, killed himself at the couple's property, at Manna Hill, in the state's far north-east, on August 16 as police searched the 410 square-kilometre Oulnina Park Station.

Police believe he may have told someone where Ms Ebert's remains were hidden.

Major Crime Investigation Branch Detective Sergeant Paul Ward said police did not believe Mr Burdon's story that Ms Ebert — a German citizen — got out of the family vehicle at Roseworthy on August 8 and walked away.

"There are now two young boys who are orphaned and Tanja's family in Germany have no place to visit, or body to lay to rest," he said.

"And while her remains have not been found, Oulnina Park Station will always have a cloud over it.

"We, as the investigation team, suspect her remains are on that property, so until she is found there will always be that question over the station at Manna Hill.

"We have searched all the waterways, all the sentimental locations, and buildings at the property but unfortunately we have not found her.

"This property is enormous, but everything leads us to believe she is there."

This one is so tragic, nobody's missing him and he wasn't that old. He must have lived somewhere at least, where all his belongings were .. even a share house someone must know he didn't come back.
A couple of years when I was looking at Karlie and Khandalyce I found out there were more cases than you would expect of bodies being found that are unidentified. There are about 20 unidentified murder victims across Australia.

500 sets of human remains unidentified.

Huge fail imo that Karlie was not identified sooner, both her and her daughter just fell straight through the cracks.

There was one in Melbourne a few years ago, happened in the same street a friend lived in. A man was beaten and he knocked on someone's door for help, they said they'd call the police but wouldn't let him in. He was being trailed by people in a car, they took him and his body was found a few suburbs away. Never identified far as I know, nor the people in the car.

Maybe when you're kind of heading that way you can drop by, or get the police to do a welfare check on him if it's playing on your mind. Can't hurt.

The National Missing Persons Week PSA is effective but it's interesting that they chose to depict a father and young daughter being the ones left behind, rather than a father and young son. It remains a truism: when you need to pack an emotional punch, use a little girl.
