Play Nice Was that Gaffs last game for WC?

8 is the absolute floor of the acceptable range, for me. Take it and move on. Context:

Other off the ball incidents:
Hall [high] [severe]: 10 weeks (reduced to 7 for guilty plea under old sytem). Staker missed only two weeks
Bugg [high] [high]: 6 weeks. Mills played the next week

Gaff [high] [severe]: 8 weeks. Brayshaw drinking through a straw for 4 weeks. Available to play? At least 6. Long lasting damage.

Given the above context Gaff got off lightly. The only thing that can mitigate his action is that it was "accidental" ie. he meant to hit him elsewhere. Holds little weight though, if you intentionally strike, and he did, you're responsible for the outcome. In this case the outcome was as grave as we've seen in a long time, so the sentence needed to be at the extreme high end. The final outcome was slightly short of that, but it'll do.

No not at all

Given im in Vic i hadnt much exposure to him as you guys obviously. Saw his press conference and had a touch of swagger that i found interesting.
I'm a Victorian as well.

The feedback was from a mate of his and footy fans who have met him casually when he travels for the odd away game.

Been told he is genuine, approachable and really cares deeply about footy and the club. Which is probably why he has stayed on so long. Not guarded or phony.

Which is maybe why his temper got the better of him.

Man, just reading the last few pages tigers fans want to see Gaff lynched.

I understand the Freo fans piling in but why the Tigers fans?

Quantify that mate. . .If you read my posts I said 7 weeks is fair and I would have been
But while we are on the subject what's with west coast supporters dragging Cotchin into it. ..like giants fans piling in I could understand. . But west coast fans?

If Gaff had hit Brayshaw slightly differently, Brayshaw does not break his jaw and he gets 1 or 2 weeks.

The intent should should be graded on equal basis to the impact, and if you throw a punch or elbow you should get 1 week.

Tom Mitchell Elbowed someone off the ball, and did not get 1 week.

Please show me any past incident of a player hitting another player, that player goes down and the player checks how the player in the ground is

Not exactly the same, but when Vlastuin threw an elbow back and hit Parker in the face this year, he immediately moved to apologise. If Gaff had really meant to strike the chest, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect that he’d stop and check on Brayshaw’s welfare.

Gaff’s a professional athlete and not an unco drunk. Reckon he hit where he aimed. And that’s not to say he wanted to maim Brayshaw or that Gaff’s a mongrel or that he’s not genuinely sorry.

How is it dumb? Steve Smith wasn't suspended for 52 games. And cricket is a complete non contact sport.

So to compare the ball tampering scandal to this incident reeks of hysteria and to satisfy the primal need to have Gaff lynched and the results broadcast on Channel 7. Were some of you seriously hoping he'd get deregistered for a year?

I was referring to the 35-40 weeks...

Serious Question: If an AFL player king hit an opponent during a game and the other player actually died from his injuries, what would be the penalty be?

Staker has a permanent brain injury. You don't need to underplay it.

On topic, assuming we finish top four and take the long way to the Grand Final, it means he will still miss Round 1 next year, at the very least. A week 2 exit would see him miss 3 games next year.

Combined with the obvious, anyone prepared to call whether Gaff is staying or going back to Victoria?

ignoring the Wallace melodrama bullshit, can Gaff go back to being just a footballer in Perth and not the guy who smashed brayshaws teeth? Perth being perth, I know it can be full on, but it can also have a short memory.

if he's gunna be heckled constantly, retreat to melbourne in a sea of AFL white noise may appeal

If deliberate punch I'd imagine life ban. Would manslaughter be sought?

Nice thinking. On what planet do you live?

Interesting comments from Angus regarding good ole Trev's golf match..... that never happened.

I think Gaff will dwell on this a long time, it came completely out of the blue, and having seen a fair bit of his footy it was completely unexpected. Whilst that is no excuse you'd have to say 8 is around the mark of what many expected.

Don't think WC exactly put their best defence forward, be very interesting to see where Gaff lands as an RFA, will WCE be less likely to match?

Perth has a short memory. I doubt anyone cares two figs if Adam Selwood has a coffee in Fremantle and he had a very public spat with Des Headland after a derby. It's a two team town sure but in the end it's just footy, and I like to think we're all reasonable when it comes to dealing with footballers in public.

Yep. Didn't seem to think much of the "he didn't mean it" talk either. Said he clearly squared up at him and smashed him in the mouth. Some of the spin put out by the Eagles is looking pretty dodgy at this point. Great mates with the Brayshaws etc

Don't think moving would change too much. He will get hounded by the media till they get bored. As far as I know, people weren't having a crack at Bugg in public.

And some rando attacked Juddy in Carlton. Point being it's unpredictable for famous or infamous footballers in any state they are recognised.

Pretty sure he is an indoors guy regardless.

it will be interesting to see how long it takes to settle.

im in melbourne, but i cant remember reading/seeing this much open hostility between the two camps here and in the media

the bolded is the key. the media will move onto the next jake king story, or danger busting a toe nail surfing in his suit, or bomber t and his soap opera. there is always something coming down the pike

10 teams over two means the focus gets spread
