Hello and welcome all to Round 8: Heritage Round. In Season 26 we explore the City of Sweet and delve into stories behind some of the historical venues that have shaped the culture of the league and by extension Sweet. This week at Dun Lop Parklands, Gumbies FFC will clash with the East Side Hawks where a replica of Boncer's Castle, the neutral venue that hosted the Season 16, 17 and 18 grand finals has been built. The castle was the field where the Gumbies emerged victorious in their first and only premiership in Season 16.

The idea of building Boncer’s Castle originated when the Sweet FA fans expressed growing demand for an extravagant neutral venue that provided a more entertaining and engaging game day experience. The arrangement of playing the grand final at the home of the wooden spooners saw insufficient ground capacity see vast amounts supporters locked out of the game and created a perception of reward for mediocrity which was widely disliked among the fans. Dun Lop Stadium was no longer up to standard for top-level Qooty games so the boncer34 administration made the decision to construct a new state of the art ground within a castle structure on the Administrator's Reserve.

The entrance to Boncer's Castle as at Season 16

The entrance was via a go-kart course which was installed to help provide an attraction for new fans that traditionally did not attend Qooty games, and encourage people to bring families and children along with them. Inside was an indoor Qooty field surrounded by state of the art training facilities, hospitality and dining. During the season, the castle served as a small sized mall mostly attracting tenants from international luxury brands aiming to expand into the Sweet market. Boncer's Castle was a successful venture for the league until Sweet's economy experienced a decline during Season 18 resulting in the eventual closure and demolition of the castle during okeydoke7's administration due to necessary cost-cutting measures. It was replaced by the plain turf of the Administrator's Reserve with a single portable toilet set-up aside the field and dubbed Okey's Outhouse.

Ten seasons after it first hosted the Sweet FA grand final, Boncer's Castle was planned prior to Season 25 to be reconstructed in time for the Season 26 Heritage Round clash between Gumbies FFC and the East Side Hawks. However, due to difficulties in getting Sweet City council approval and the league experiencing unexpected cash flow issues, budget and time constraints meant that not all the features of the original behemoth of a venue could be recreated.

Nevertheless, the game is expected to be a sellout with plenty of families buying tickets in bulk anticipating tremendous displays of skill and particularly high flying marks.

Players To Watch :

Gumbies FFC
New Gumbies ruck roo2macca has been on fire this season regularly giving the midfielders first use as he leads the hitouts by a fair margin to start this season averaging 13.9. In their win last week, roo2macca was bested which is a rare occasion and will be looking to bounce back quickly and extend the Gumbies winning form.

Gumbies premiership veteran StFly never had much love for the Hawks and has had a relatively quiet season to date, but was crucial in his role on the wing, hauling in 8 marks and kicking two goals in a close win. He'll look to stamp his authority on the site where he experienced premiership glory 10 seasons ago, as the Gumbies attempt to consolidate a position in the top 2.

East Side Hawks
Hall of Fame Immortal Hawk boncer34 played a fine game and displayed vintage form moving to the wing - gathering 27 disposals and kicking a goal in the last quarter to seal the deal against the Bombers in a fantastic performance. If he manages to continue to produce similar efforts on the wing the Hawks should be able to sure up their finals spot and challenge for the premiership again.

Former Gumbies captain Noobz0r will play a key role in deciding the result this round with the new Hawks full forward not quite having the kicking boots on so far this season. He currently leads the behinds kicked for the league, but he is getting plenty of shots on goal and if he fixes his technique he's in for a massive goal haul.
