Moved Thread Optus Stadium capacity should be increased to 80,000

Optus Stadium is obviously a brilliant stadium however I think the capacity should be increased to 80,000 ASAP.

I believe the stadium was built to be able to add 1 more level to increase the capacity however I stand to be corrected.

West Coast need an 80,000 plus stadium like Richmond, Collingwood have at the MCG.

Fair point, in due course. I just believe that West Coast in terms of size is similar to Richmond and Collingwood - so for finals, derbies and big games 80,000 would be ideal.

West Coast don't "need" 80,000. They may want 80,000 (they don't), but football isn't the only consideration. A game is just another booked date for stadium management and West Coast only have a dozen or so across the year. This is a taxpayer funded stadium, not an AFL stadium. Does the increased cost for all other events justify it? I wouldn't have thought so.

When Perth Stadium was built, it was said they could increase capacity to 70,000 without making structural changes.

Melbourne have more than double the population of Perth.

4.6m compared to 2m.

100,000 seat stadium is 2.1% of Melbourne's population.

60,000 seat Stadium is 3% of Perth population.

Simplistically the stadium fits with our population.

West Coast also want to keep supply low so they can charge the highest membership prices.

High membership prices suck but it's the price you pay for a stadium and clubs to be self sufficient.

If Victoria needed a new stadium the people would be crying that it needed to be given to them for free, all tickets were $20 and available on the day and their clubs would keep 90% of the revenue and only play against other Victorian clubs and only in good times lots.

It was just built, surely there is a significant cost to increase its capacity, let it sit for 5-10 years and see if an upgrade is required.

Freo had 6 games with a crowd under 50k and 3 under 40k (one was a one off against GC).

West Coast had one crowd under 50k and 7 under 55k.

Judging the venue on two finals is silly. On that metric the MCG is too small because they keep getting 90k+ sellouts with all Vic finals.

I was a proponent of 65-70k but it really doesn't need to be a super stadium that's rarely full. Most WC games you can buy a ticket if you want and the ground is still fairly full which is what the clubs and operators want.

It needs a 5-10 year period of operation to gauge whether the capacity is sufficient.

Why they would need to is beyond me. Sure, WC are doing Great, but I’d be willing to bet that it’s mostly a shiny new toy thing.

Thing is, if you make the stadium any bigger, the break-even number per event increases also because of the higher operating and maintenance costs. Make it too big and you risk turning lots of smaller drawing (not AFL Finals) events into making a loss. The whole idea of having the stadium is for maximum public benefit drawing as many events as poissible - I think next big event at the stadium is Taylor Swift.
