Might want to double check your top 10 data on this one. Seems unlikely to me that every single player has finished in the top 10 at least once.

On the contrary, Given they all finished in the top 10 this season, I'd say it's highly likely...

It was messed up previously and all players outside the top 10 had an extra 1 added. It's because my template defaults every player's finish to 1st before the data is entered. Might set it to 99th instead.

Blicavs is a worthy winner (my money would have been on Hawkins) although people may do a double take that his Carji tally now matches Ablett Sr, Scarlett and Bartel's combined tallies.

I will say that it feels like Geelong's voting system could use a revamp. It seems like almost every year of the hundreds of votes awarded, the top five are all within a bee's dick, like the purposely make it close.

Maybe this year is a bad example, because there were up to half a dozen genuine contenders, but it just seems to happen too often. It seems like it would happen in counts where everyone gets a rating (e.g. the entire team could conceivably get, say, a 7 out of 10 in a given game), rather than the players being ranked (top five, top 10, 1-22, whatever).

Certainly highlights the differences between voting systems - Ablett finishing outside the top ten for the first time since his debut season 2002 despite polling 14 Brownlow votes, and Blicavs winning the b&f without polling in the Brownlow.

Steve Johnson managed to poll 25 and 19 in the Brownlow in separate seasons without making the top ten at Geelong.

Both worthy winners. Rapt Devon Smith won it after his finest season yet, has really grown into his full potential at Essendon. Well done to Saad, coming 4th at a club that was largely decent (and to that top 3), only just turned 24.

Blicavs might look funny as a 2 time winner, and the finish is hilariously close, but he had a worthy season. Tim Kelly almost did it!

On the Brownlow votes, Blicavs doesn't necessarily play a Brownlow game, and the umpires are understandably conscious of guys like Ablett and Stevie J later in their careers. All three of those polls were mildly surprising on the night.

Great night for the recent list additions.

Johnson was always a terrible Carji performer, even though in his best seasons, he was very consistent with his form. Ablett's also been a bit stiff in our B&F counts: people talk about how amazing it was that he didn't win the Brownlow in 2007 and 2008 (and he - not Dane Swan - would have won in 2010, had Judd been suspended), yet he's only won two Carjis (2007/09) and one of those was shared with Enright.

Both the Dons & Cats order seems to almost be exactly lined up with the amount of games played.

Makes their awards seem like a "most consistent" rather than a "best & fairest"

Would be interesting to see if this was the way members were happy with their clubs highest individual honour being decided of it is just a relic of past ways.

I'm not sure Devon has improved that much. I do think he's been able to play the role he wants, and is best suited to at the Bombers.

I've been huge fan of Devon for years. He's always had the skills and aggression AFL players need. I have very fond memories 8f him coming to the bench ( my seat used to be right above) really angry whenever we were behind. Seriously good attitude I think.

Congratulations to him and delighted he's going great.

I will now take a self indulgent moment to snort in derision at people saying last year he wasn't in our best 22, or our top ten players.

I don't mind the idea behind the Cats' method of 'your best 21 games (total games for the season minus two)', which basically means you can still be a chance if you missed a game or two, but that seems to skew it towards reliable and durable defenders. Scarlett must be dark this system wasn't around in the early-mid 2000s, he'd have won 4-5.

Hard to see how a key forward can win with that system, in retrospect. No matter how good you are, you're always going to have a few stinkers in a season. Throw in the obligatory suspension or injury for Hawkins and he's out of contention. Perhaps 21 is too high, maybe 19 would give everyone a decent chance?

Again, no problem with Blicavs, but seems a shame Hawkins didn't have even a podium B&F finish or AA selection from a remarkable season.

Well I think it's fair to assume that I've been a big fan of him. I've watched almost every Giants game and been a big fan of Devon since 2013. He clearly found a more suitable role at Essendon, but this responsibility/opportunity has also allowed him to grow as an individual and footballer.

Anyone who didn't know he had the skills and aggression, or thought he wasn't best-22, even a top ten player at the Giants, is clearly a moron, or someone with passing interest in the teams up north. But I think its fair to assume that most people don't think that, at all.

There is nothing wrong in saying that Devon's 2018 was his best season to date.

I wasn't referring to you, apologies if it came across that way. On reflection I can see it was carelessly worded.
I did find those conversations with people last year frustrating though.

Ablett never stood a chance after missing too many games. I don't like their voting system at all. He was 3 votes behind Danger in the Brownlow (top 20 overall) and misses the club top ten. Robbie Flower only won one B&F for Melbourne because of their voting system, Laurie Fowler won 3 in the same period, he was a handy player but nowhere near Robbie's standard.
