TRUE CRIME PODS.

Serial season one

The pod that started it all, Serial’s first season deals with the disappearance and murder of high school senior Hae Min Lee in 1999 — and the subsequent conviction of her classmate and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, for her murder. Reporter and host Sarah Koenig follows up on thousands of documents and trial testimony while also talking to everyone she can find, resulting in reams of research that raise even more questions about what really happened. The podcast’s immense success even led to a popular spinoff, Undisclosed, that continues to follow Syed’s battle to prove his innocence.
Episodes: 10 in season one
Length: 1 hour or less

Missing and Murdered
The first season centers on the unsolved 1989 murder of Alberta Williams in British Columbia, following reporter Connie Walker as she meets with the person who sent her the tip in the first place. Season two shifts its focus to Cleo, a young Cree girl who was apprehended by child welfare workers in Saskatchewan in the 1970s. Her family tells a different story, however, of how she was stolen, raped, and murdered.
Episodes: 18 over two seasons
Length: 1 hour or less

S-Town
From the same producers as Serial, S-Townquickly became the podcast everyone was talking about. Its single season follows John, a man who despises his Alabama town and wants someone desperately to investigate the scion of a wealthy family who’s been going around town saying he got away with murder.
Episodes: 7

Crimetown
Season one explores the dark underbelly of Providence, Rhode Island, where organized crime and corruption once ran rampant. Didn’t expect a Godfather-style saga of alliances, betrayals, heists, mobsters, and crooked cops from this sleepy New England state? Prepare to be shocked. Length: 1 hour or less

In the Dark
In season one, you’ll learn about Jacob Wetterling, an 11-year-old boy who was kidnapped in rural Minnesota. The lauded second season takes a different path with the case of Curtis Flowers, a black man who, over the past two decades, has been tried six times for the same crime — and has maintained his innocence throughout. A great dive into the annals of the justice system.
Episodes: 17 over two seasons
Length: 1 hour or less

A Killing on the Cape
From ABC Radio and 20/20, A Killing on the Cape offers a chilling look at the 2002 murder that rocked an idyllic Cape Cod town. Fashion writer Christa Worthington was found stabbed to death with her 2-year-old daughter unharmed by her side, and after a three-year search, the entire community was under suspicion. Ultimately, Worthington’s garbage man was convicted of her murder and rape — but it doesn’t end there.

This is a New South Wales one. A young man, Mark Haines found on railway tracks and made assumptions. No real investigation. The investigator I don't believe had any idea at the time the outcome at the end.

There is also a youtube video with a description of the scene. Probably best after you have listened to a couple of episodes. There is also an Australian Story episode on it. Don't watch that either until the end or the last couple of episodes.

This new Australian podcast seems to be pretty good, the hosts are relaxed and a bit cheeky. Here they tackle WA serial killer Eric Cooke, the Nightcaller.

This week we discuss the horrifying tale of Eric Cooke, a man who couldn't hold a tune, but did hold Perth hostage. Hear about the brutality of Eric's life, the bizarre police plot that apprehended him and the enormity of the collateral damage.

Did you compile the list in the OP shellyg? Fantastic resource! Love podcasts and will certainly check some of these out. I have so far got through most of the Casefiles, the original Serial, Unravel (Blood on the Tracks), The Teachers Pet and Dead Wrong.

I didn't compile the whole list, I grabbed it from a couple of sources and tweaked it. If you want something a little bit different from the ones you've listened to, try Detective and Small Town Dicks. Both really interesting - the true story tellers are the cops and they don't hold much back.

Googling small town dicks could backfire on me but will check it out. Thanks for the list too.

"Background briefing" - Episode -More than a fight is another one similar to the Unravel podcast. Indigenous teenager Lewis "Buddy" Kelly whose body was found on the train tracks New Years Eve 1983. There seems to be a whole series of podcasts, not all related to crime.

Also available via podcasts. I haven't yet listened.

It also looks like there may be more to come with Unravel on a different investigation.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-...olve-real-crimes/10346474?WT.ac=statenews_tas

"In 2012, reports to Crime Stoppers Australia led to 12,845 charges being laid across the country.

Last year that number had almost doubled to 24,630.

Crime Stoppers Queensland general manager Jonathon Cowley said there was no denying public interest in crime was up thanks to hugely popular crime podcasts like Serial, The Teacher's Pet and the ABC's own Unravel and Trace."

Had to laugh when Senior Sergeant Lindsay said 'while the fervour around the true crime genre was interesting, people needed to make sure they did not take things too far and became the perpetrators themselves.

Obviously if you go into someone's backyard you are committing the offence of trespassing, for example.'

I imagined an enthusiastic sleuth ringing Crimestoppers

Caller: "I'd like to report a crime please. I'm standing outside my neighbours bedroom window and I knew something was going on in there ... I can see a heap of marijuana and a bong on one of the bedside tables. On the other bedside table ... hang on I'll just zoom in with my phone .. pretty sure there's a couple of little empty plastic bags. I'll wait under this bush til the cops get here .."

Thanks for the reminder. Did a bit of pre-reading on it beforehand. If it is anything like the first Unravel there should be some good analysis done.

They keep going on about the Insular Peninsula. Rather scary thinking of people growing up there.

They're only half hour episodes, really looking forward to seeing how this rolls out. So well done its very easy to put yourself right there. One of the descriptions a witness has given of turning off one main road and suddenly being completely isolated and nobody can hear a thing.. spot on. Quite frightening.

A lot of creepy things with the episode. The ranger obviously had an intimate knowledge of the area. My directional sense is not that good that I could pin point and exact spot many years later. It must have haunted him particularly finding it untouched many years later.

A couple of articles from the Australian after the 2011 inquest. Case wasn't referred to the DPP as there wasn't enough evidence.

"The first line of investigation followed by the inquest involved a suspect named Neville Tween, a career criminal who was convicted of a brutal assault on a man in bushland in Sydney's north in 1975.

Tween lived in the Terrey Hills area, close to where Adams disappeared, and drove a light-coloured panel van at the time.

The second line of inquiry involved a group of young men who came to be known as the Roselands Lads and who had access to a green combi van.

Mr Mitchell dismissed both these theories, saying there was not enough evidence for a jury to convict any of the men."

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/ne...c05e37733?sv=93fe77e5d536244f2426fb89444fb0d9

""I strongly believe that Trudie Adams was kidnapped off the street by Tween and [Raymond] Johnson for the purpose of sexual assault," McKean wrote in a statement tendered to the court.

"I believe that something went wrong as the two men went about the business of sexually assaulting Adams and she has been killed."

Johnson took whatever secrets he had to the grave in October last year.
Tween, now known as John David Anderson, is serving an 18-year sentence for a 2006 conspiracy to import $7 million worth of cocaine, for which his son, Michael, 32, was also convicted."
