Opinion Is McGovern overrated?

Funny to read through the posts before he signed, there should be a few mea culpa’s from people, someone claiming neither gov and Barrass no good at one on one...oh my.

McGovern as a player is rated about right but the importance of a specialist intercept tall defender is overrated.
Every other club is scrambling to catch up, and have their own ‘interceptor’ down back.

A unique fusion of a large cement wheat silo and a lazy podgy country boy
filtered through rural football and mixed with robust seasonings,
has delivered us a living miracle, a football Titan, a god of the leather pill,
Mcgovern of the Iron Ribs, AKA the Governator....all kneel in his presence.

Guv is what you call a good old fashioned footballer (not athlete). Full of courage and reliable, and someone you would like to go to war with as he would protect your back:):thumbsu:

This guy was so lucky we've had injuries so he could show us his skills. Our MC never had him ahead of Emac or MIich Brown. FFs he was even told to lose Kg or ever return to the club again. JK gets injured in 14, GOV kicks 10 in 4 games. His biggest break was 2015 when Emac and Miich brown were sidelined for a while so he took advantage of that and never looked back. I wonder how many Gov's we have in WAFL right now.

This is a bit off. McGovern would have broken into the side if he hadn’t been injured early in 2013. His move to defence was improvised due to injuries.

Watching McGovern live early 2013 there was something special about him, he kicked six goals in two games. He misses ten weeks with no little running in that time.

Was playing Ruck, Forward and beat up Mitch Brown in a few one on ones.

Same thing happened with Gaff.

Watching game highlights makes me realise how good Gaff's ball use has been this year, changes our ball movement immensely.

Insanely talented and natural reader of the game. Haven't quite seen a player so dominant like him, especially in the air in defence.

Barrass is gaining ground too which is so great to see. Had a brilliant finals series - was Huge. Incredibly underrated.

Very overrated. Dropped 3 marks in the GF and cost us goals

Before the melts, only joking. Mihocek actually pushed him on at least 1 of those dropped marks, should have been a free kick.

Classic interview with him. One of the commentators asked him what he was thinking before that play. I thought he wasn't thinking he plays on instinct
He says he wasn't thinking, he just goes for every mark he can, does that every time.

Next day he seemed to be unaffected by the nights celebrations, unlike Hutchings, who looked like a mess

He's going to be one of our all-time great cult figures. I mean, he's not particularly strong or quick. He looks like he's never been in a gym. But he's got unbelievable hands and reads the play beautifully. And I think he's still an under-rated field kick. And he's been AA three times in his first 100 games. If he wasn't so good, he'd be a running joke. I'm still slightly puzzled by how he does what he does. He looks like a country footballer who has 10 beers, a few darts and three pies after every game. Everyone bangs on about the physical demands of the modern game and also the demands placed on players when it comes to strategy and game plan. And I'm sure that's all true. But McGovern says "nah I just try to mark it every time".

I think his secret weapon is laziness. He only runs to where the ball is going to go, and doesn't bother running anywhere else. Its very efficient, and totally the opposite of my headless chook strategy of running 2.5 km per possession.

Eastern Rangers - I have been watching Eastland put together s body of work during the year and there is a lot about him that reminds me of Gov. I saw Gov at Claremont before drafting and post draft but before alignment. Eastland is slightly more ruck then kpp and could he be our next Gov. I personally think his ruck performance is better than Gov and while shorter than AFL main rucks, he would be able to relieve and give a contest.

I’d appreciate your thought as I am keen to pull the trigger with a late pick and it would mean we could let McInnes go and I’m really not clear on Olango and next steps.
