Greeted with a massive show of force. 100 of them are costing us a lot of money.
A massive police operation is being carried out as more than 100 Rebels bikies descend on Melbourne ahead of a national event this weekend.
Authorities have set up an elaborate checkpoint with roads blocked off and hundreds of witches hats lining the road in Sunshine West.
The gathering comes as tension with rival gang Comancheros reaches a boiling point.
Police have conducted breath and drug tests, with sniffer dogs also brought in, checking licences, registrations and carrying out road worthiness tests.
Members of the Rebels national outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) have travelled from as far as Western Australia for the weekend gathering.
One of Western Australia's top police officers went on radio yesterday warning fellow cops top be cautious around the bikies.
"We've got some warnings out for our officers to take particular care because these tensions are emerging," Police Commissioner Chris Dawson yesterday told 6PR radio.
"What concerns me and should concern the community is particularly when firearms are being used out in public, as we’ve seen, and people being injured."
Dramatic images from the 9NEWS helicopter shows the bikie members heading to the checkpoint and 2km away the police lying in wait.
Victoria Police said they are prepared to "act swiftly" if any violence breaks out and are warning residents in Sunshine and St Kilda they will see increased motorcycle traffic this weekend.
"The run will be closely monitored today to ensure public safety," Acting Commander David Clayton said.
