Future Developments of Sydney Stadiums

Alright, here’s a random ANZ-related question that I’ll put out there: what’s happening with naming rights? ANZ’s agreement runs out at the end of the year and there’s been no announcement about renewal. Given that it will likely be demolished in the next two or three years, should we expect it to revert to Stadium Australia on January 1st or does anyone here know any better?

If the NSW government was smart they will build a new SFS 50k stadium, but piss off the SCG Trust and build it somewhere else to make it closer to the cbd or more importantly transport.

The yanks would have built a new stadium where Barangaroo is, ie where the wharfs and docks were at the Hungry Mile area and made it an integrated stadium, apartments, casino, and parks inner city revitalization project.

I reckon above the rail tracks next door to Central station.

Great location but How much disruption to central would construction be? Is there enough space to put up the require supporting pylons as the trains get pretty close to each other. ok they are separate widely at the platform but not south of them.

Is the foot print of central wide enough south of the platforms to build a rectangle stadium.if the pitch is 70m wide and you think the whole structure would need 50-70m each side of the pitch. No problems about being long enough.

Saturday night footy with a 50k crowd and the normal train traffic might be a bit of a zoo at central and around it.

No idea if it would work or could be built. Would be one hell of a project. Just an idea.

Prince Alfred Park looks like the most likely candidate to me. Belmore Park on the East side right spot. It's ugly politics but I think subsuming a Park/swimming pool in Redfern might be easier than the CBD.

Was there room to rebuild sfs bigger?
Ideally, I would’ve said go for ~70k at sfs and ~30k at Parra.

They wanted to level SFS and build a 60k stadium about 200m away on kippax lake. People revolted over this option.

Having a 60k plus stadium at Moore Park/Centennial Park completely undermines the need for ANZ stadium.

Bottom line is, Sydney doesn’t need another bigger stadium. No one turns up to watch sport. SFS is hardly ever half full.

They should have leveled SFS, used $800m to upgrade SCG and made Waratahs, Sydney fc, cricket, Swans and Roosters all play there.

As for ANZ, no 20 year old should be knocked down and rebuilt at a cost of $1.2b in public funding. It’s beyond absurd no matter which way you spin it. If a private company wants to fund it, go for it. But there is no public need for a knock down and rebuild

Lol - you want NRL, AFL and SuperRugby to share one ground in the winter, and cricket and A-League to use the same ground in the summer?

Do you even sports??

The ALP NSW Opposition oppose the demolition of the SFS, but agree to renovating ANZ (which is less then 20 years old, & is easily now reconfigured to rectangular status-where it successfully hosts RL SOO & Grand finals).

Opinion Polls suggest the ALP has a good chance of winning the upcoming NSW state election.
Your views on what % approx. of NSW voters living in country NSW support spending c. $2 billion+ of taxpayer moneys on the LNP plans for ANZ & SFS?
Ditto, for voters who live in Sydney?

Dont pretend to know what percentage of voters want or dont want it.

Infrastructure is needed though.

That's the problem with Sydneysiders. They are very Nimby.

The sfs will be demolished well before the next election.

They were against demolishing ANZ and now that's been changed to an refurbishment.

Actually, what I am proposing is exactly what is going to happen while the SFS is rebuilt. I know you’re a Freo supporter and probably 3 hours behind on everything, but here in the future on the eastern seaboard we know what the deal is.

Let’s see how it works for all those slowpokes west of the great dividing range.

Mid February to early Aug
- Waratahs split 8 home games between SCG and ANZ
- any finals to be played at ANZ

Mid March to End Sept
- Roosters play 12 home games (roosters currently sell a home game or two interstate).
- any home finals played at SCG

End of March to End Sept
- Swans play 11 home games
- any home final played at SCG

Start of Oct to Mid May
- Sydney FC play 14 home games
- plus any fa cup or finals at SCG
- home games from mid nov to feb played at kogarah and liechardt ovals

End Nov to start Feb
- NSW play 1 x day game
- Australia play 4 x ODI
- AUS XI play 1 x 3 day game
- Australia play 1 x test
- Sixers play 6 home games.

Waratahs - 6 games max
Roosters - 14 games max
Swans - 13 games max
SFC - 10 games max
Australia - 4 ODI and 1 test
NSW and AUS XI handful of games but should be moved to North Sydney Oval, Bankstown oval and Spotless stadium
Sixers - 6 games plus finals - 8 games max.

Your trying to tell me the SCG can’t handle 55 games of AFL, NRL, Rugby, Football and Cricket in a 365 day period??

When the pitch is in (Nov to mid Feb) Sydney FC can play at ANZ, Kogarah, Liechadt and North Sydney Ovals. Gives all of their key catchment areas a chance to see a game as well.

You can’t justify spending $800m on SFS for 12 NRL games, 9 Rugby and 20 A league games plus 4 concerts a year. That’s like 44 major events a year. A woeful return on investment.

And now SFS will compete with world class stadiums in ANZ, Spotless, West Sydney Stadium, Acer Arena for big events. So it’s not like SFS is going to magically explode with events and put on 100 events a year.

You ovbiously aren’t used to understanding a complex market like Sydney. But yeah, do I even sport indeed....

The Roosters and the Swans could share without any huge problem, apart from arguments over the preparation of the playing surface. If they alternate week to week should not be a problem. Perth and Adelaide host two AFL teams playing on alternate weeks so that could fit in. Even in this scenario you have the Waratahs only partly using the ground with a preference for ANZ.

Sydney FC effectively have no home ground and are scrounging around for other venues. While the pitch is in (4 months) they can't play at the SCG. Looking at the A-League draw for this season they play only 4 games, not 10 at the SCG. Your plan is largely speculative and involves moving cricket out to alternative smaller venues to free up the SCG. Good luck getting NSW cricket to move away from the SCG to allow others to use the venue.

Perth Stadium will be about 35 events per year and costs nearly twice as much. (22 AFL, 7 BBL, 1Test, 1 ODI, 1 Wallabies game, plus finals and a few concerts).

And so the circus continues. We want state of the art facilities they say. But are you willing to pay the price?? Hell no.

This is why having WSS, ANZ, Spotless, SCG and Allianz will never be as successful as Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

You have 5 major sporting stadiums in a city that is difficult to get around due to geographical and historical design, where people don’t like leaving their own suburb/region and would rather watch sport on tv than travel 25km to see a game at ANZ. That just doesn’t happen in Melbourne.

Melbourne has MCG, Marvel and AAMI. 3 major stadiums smack bang in the middle of CBD. Easy for everyone to get to, and the city loves going to see live sporting events.

Perth has 1 major oval, and NIB for football rugby. Adelaide has one major oval and 1 small field for football/rugby.
Brisbane has Suncorp and the Gabba.

What an absolute waste of money. White elephant doesn’t even begin to describe these stadia.

Going off what the Rebels attract here in Melbourne, would the Waratahs command a crowd bigger than SFS even for finals? Just thinking here. I understand it’s not the main focus of your post but just curious.

And so the circus continues. We want state of the art facilities they say. But are you willing to pay the price?? Hell no.

In all fairness, we don't actually know the deal they were offered.

I know the initial offer to both AFL clubs at Optus was batshit insane - in the vicinity of $10 million per club per annum in rent. It was laughed away - I don't know what was finally agreed. But it's not out of the realms of possibility that Parramatta were offered a deal that was unaffordable, especially in the context of a team unlikely to fill the ground regularly.

Having a 60k plus stadium at Moore Park/Centennial Park completely undermines the need for ANZ stadium.
Which is what I want
Play parra/Penrith/Canterbury/Tigers games at parra, Sydney/south/manly/Cronulla at sfs.
It’s obvious with anz and sfs the nsw government won’t be proping up Leichhardt or brookvale oval etc. in the future much.
May as well move to somewhere which fans can enjoy.

Do feel a bit with playing tigers out at parra. Sfs would be marginally closer, but they are further west than the 4 I have at sfs right?

Ps. St George can play all their bloody games at Wollongong.
