Yeah strongly disagree with throwing him back.

As i've said before, I think it's fixable because he has shown, especially earlier in the year, that he can kick accurately with the correct approach and set up. It's mental rather than physical and can be worked on. I think he's shown more as a 20 year old than Tabs has as a 25 year old frankly.
From memory he still chipped/stabbed at the ball rather than kicking through it properly which is rubbish technique, a couple more nervously managing to go through the goals doesn't change that much for mine. When we now have a few options to choose from this needs to be 100% fixed to keep being automatically played forward every week.

So many forwards now?

- Hogan
- Lobb
- Cox
- Taberner
- McCarthy
- Walters
- Ballantyne
- Matera
- Fyfe floating?
- Logue?

In reserve:

- Apeness
- Dixon
- Strnadica?
- Darcy?

We’re probably now a couple ahead in terms of ruck/forward types.

Apeness certainly wouldn’t have got an extension if they’d waited until the end of the year.

You’d think a couple of those will have to go by the end of next season, even if they find some form.

These are problems I’m not familiar with FFC having.
Imagine if we had people to kick it to them

It's going to be super tall as a forward line. Lobb is a bit of a log and Hogan and Tabs aren't exactly famed for their defensive pressure. There really needs to be complementary smalls to pressure and crumb to make this forward work, hopefully that means we're moving away from our half forwards moving into midfield to create dirty ball and taking more risks to score.

I thought Lobb was pretty mobile for a tall

Log was a bit harsh, he's mobile for someone with a ruckman's build but he's still slow and a bit gangly. He's a marking target, not going to get many pressure acts out of him.

I think Freo put a highlights package up.

McCarthy - Taberner - Walters

Matera - Hogan - Lobb

McCarthy as a lead up on the wings as a second target to Tabs when we're trying to get the ball out of D50 which remains a problem. In our forward areas he should aim to become one of the elite defensive forwards in the game. Sonny as the link between midfield and the forward line.

It will be nice to have opposition defenders be accountable now with our marking power rather than letting them take easy intercept marks over and over. Very hard for poor Brennan Cox as a teenager and our undersized forwards to battle out of their weight division continually.

McCarthy - Hogan - Walters
Matera - Lobb - (some small forward)

I really like McCarthy for balance. Reckon it's a real talking point but imo Sandi/Darcy, Hogan, Lobb and one of Cox/Tabs is one too tall.

Certainly too tall under the previous rules and our previous game plan but I think the coaching staff are taking a punt on contested marking increasing in importance with the zonal rules. Also West Coast arguably won a flag on the back of inercept/contest marking around the ground.

I think a bit of it hinges on whether McCarthy can improve his defensive game, otherwise we'll need to go for an outright small.

Yeah I mean I reckon we'll definetly try it out and WC showed that it can work (albeit I don't think McCarthy can play in that lineup as well which isn't ideal for imo) but I think we'd need quite a radical shift skill wise to make it work (WC are by far the most skilled side in the comp) and I don't think that's happening in a single off-season.

Why do people love Taberner so much? Honestly, it’s an amazing feat... the guy has never ever dominated a full match, has never ever even had a good month, and five or six years deep into a career with intense patronisation he still can’t lodge himself into the 22.

Come on, these arrivals and Cox’s decent showings at age 19 have stamped his papers.

Unreal. Unreal. What’s the appeal? People just like him for the sake of it.

I don't think West Coast are the most skilled team in the comp. I think they have a very structured, positional approach to moving the ball from the back with lots of options for the ball user. I think teams that play a more contested style and counterattacking teams end up looking less skilled because of their style.

Having forwards that defenders have to respect gives you a lot of options as a coach. A lot easier to create space by pulling defenders out of position.

West Coast are very good at moving the ball slowly.

What? Sandilands is far better than Darcy and Lobb will be playing primarily forward.
Sandilands is also what, 35, and his best (full) season was about five years ago. This obsession with going best best best is ludicrous - Johnson, Spurr, Pearce all kept on a season (or probably two or three) too many. They were all well past it but we have this thing where we have to have ‘proven’ qualities out there. Why? We are a developing team. Our segue to younger blokes and balancing of young and old was butchered but it’s too late to play Sandilands ahead of Sean Darcy... Darcy isn’t rated that well around here for some reason but I loved how quickly and confidently he asserted himself and he’s got a lot of potential. Sandilands is on the list to play 10 games and help him at training. If he’s our first ruck I’ll shit.

Then again I reckon Sandi was great for taps but fuuuucking useless around the ground. Could only mark under zero pressure which was always half way down the ground, just a dumb player, and if he got a mark he’d always always always handball it off (Suban, Danyle Pearce used to love these and always shank the inside 50...).

If Sean Darcy didn’t ask to have him around for some development, he’d have been gone.

Ugh I hate when I agree with you but alas.

FF Walters Lobb Bennell
CHF Cox Hogan McCarthy

Need a defensive forward somewhere in there.
I prefer to see Hogan as a roaming forward rather than stay at home wrestling machine (which he’s not famed for).

Cox ditto the above.

Lobb deep can be the contested mark we’ve been crying out for.

Bennell (oh to dream) and Walters are dynamite on the ground

It’s really McCarthy’s role at HF that’s subject to conjecture (Bennell aside).
He needs to improve or potentially remodel his game
