If Rankine and Rozee are gone then I'd guess the Crows will go Hately, which I'm fine with. Don't think he fills a need.
I'm thinking of the composition of our future starting midfield when I say Hately. Once guys like Boak, Rockliff, Robbie and Ebert are no longer around, the stocks could get thin. We have guys like Ollie, SPP, Atley and Drew who should still be around, but I think we need more. I agree that the Crows probably grab Hately at 8 though, if Rankine and Rozee are gone.

Am not 100% sure Atley and Drew will make it consistently at AFL level.
Atley will probably be a marginal player. Drew has been too injured and missed to many games to do a decent evaluation of his prospects.

All this talk of cows trading up surely not even the sun's and saints are stupid enough to give those picks up. Surely not.

That's why I reckon they are foxing with Adelaide and hoping we will stump up 5 and 15.

If you want a laugh, go to the Adelaide draft thread and see them trying to use 8, 13 and 16 to get 2 and 3 from Gold Coast.

If we could give up 5, 10 and 15 to get Lukosius and Rankine I'd do it in two seconds flat.
Could you do 5,10,15 and next years first for 2,3 this year. Unlikely to be accepted, but 5,10 could possibly get gold coast both the kings

5,10,15 and next years first for 2,3 and 6 maybe. I haven’t done the points maths, but it might be more possible to do 5, 15 and next years first for 3 and 6, so we go into the draft with 3,6,10 and gc go in with 2, 5, 15 and an extra first next year. May have to swap 10 and 15 around again and give us a later pick.

Atley has some characteristics that scream AFL player. His ability to burst out of contests, to break tackles, to win the ball inside, etc. However his ball use is a concern like a lot of our players. Its a shame our failed Rockliff recruitment hindered his chance to get games last year.

Im comfortable Drew wont make it and was very surprised he got a 2 year extension.

If Port had picks 2 and 3 and gave them up for 5, 10 and 15 and next year's first I think even I would burn Scott HQ to the ground.

Why would Gold Coast even begin to entertain that thought?

I like Hateley from the bits I saw of him at SANFL level, but agree that there may be more explosive/creative types to take around pick 10.

I've been looking without success for footage of Caldwell. How does he compare to Hately in playing style and ceiling?

Ceiling higher, playing style a bit difference. Caldwell is more explosive, has better pace and agility.

I feel if Caldwell played all year he’d be thought of as a top 5 pick

Any concerns about all the hamstring injuries Macca? Not another Nathan Freeman?

Geez I must be on the ignore list of many! I posted that and tumble weeds lol

I’m dreaming but I’d still love to wrangle 2 and 3 or 4 and 5.

I wonder if GC could do 5, 10, 15 and next years first for 2 and 3 plus two 2018 second rounders?

Mine was better

No it was worse. If GC did that the AFL should wind them up and start again in Townsville.

Come on four first rounders, one potential no.1 in 19 for two firsts and two seconds

Atley will probably be a marginal player. Drew has been too injured and missed to many games to do a decent evaluation of his prospects.
Atley plays like someone who has too many thoughts going through his head when he has the ball, and is doing his best to be unselfish all the time.
His hands are very clean under the fall of the ball, and when he fires the handball off immediately, it is often very effective to help clear traffic. Where he struggles though is when he is running forward with space ahead of him, and he still seems to be looking to give off the handball instead of using his pace to break the line and then deliver the ball cleanly to a teammate upfield.

He must stop over-handballing it. I don't think his kicking is poor as such, it's just that he overthinks things. He's a bit like Adam Thomson in that regard.

Drew remains a complete unknown for me. I was looking forward to his improvement this year, but he was deprived of a whole season with that foot injury. In his first year at SANFL level he was often high in the tackle count, and relatively low in the possession count. Right now, I don't know what sort of midfielder he will actually become. He looked ok in this bit of footage from 2017:

According to this and this Carlton have had 12 players go out the door and 4 come in (not including the two state league players they received then offloaded) and have only 4 draft selections at present - 3 of them in the fourth round. They might need to get hold of some more picks to fill their list.

The potential number 1 depends on Port finishing bottom. Potential and a bag of peanuts gets you a bag of peanuts.

Picks 2 and 3 in this draft could get you two generational players. It is the best of the best. Throwing that away is madness.

At best I think a club could prise 3 away from Gold Coast and we are best placed to do that with pick 5. If Gold Coast are more interested in Rozee than Rankine then they would be very likely to to get him with 5 so anything attached to pick 5 is gravy.

But 2 and 3 together has exponential value. To Port Adelaide to get our hands on those picks would be next to priceless. It's Holy Grail stuff. And GC know it.

And on top of trading 2 and 3 you expect GC to throw in two second rounders? That's mattresses on the walls time. ;)

If we did trade up and somehow, both Lukosious and Rankine were available, who would we rather?
Rankine suits our needs and it looks like we are targeting him, but if Lukosius was available too, f*** needs. Lukosius in a heartbeat.

So just swapping our 5 + 10 + next year's first for their 3 + 6:

GCS keep 2 (Luko) and get at 5 who they would have got at 3 (Rozee), so they're effectively swapping 6 for 10 + next year's first. Would that be enough for them?

While we move 5 + 10 up to 3 + 6 (Rankine + Smith or King?), giving up next year's first in the process. Maybe we would have got Rankine at 5 anyway, but this also gives us Smith.

Though if next year we're going for a big FA (? Coniglio) or an OOC (? Kelly), we're definitely gonna need next year's first.

Caldwell is possibly the hardest player to judge in the draft pool. I’ve seen him play twice, best on ground in 15 minutes of a championships game and best on ground in half of a tac cup game.

I couldn’t name a single thing he does poorly. He wins his own footy, uses it well, he’s pretty quick, tackles and does all the defensive things. How can you compare that to Jackson Hatley who has ticked every box while playing 12 weeks of consistent senior football?

Caldwell at 10, regardless of the hamstrings, might be too good to pass up. At 15 and it’s pants down time.
