Similar to the thread I posted last week, it’s time to rank the forward lines heading into 2019.

I acknowledge that teams don’t necessarily have a ‘forward six’ due to rotations, but for the purposes of ranking each part of the ground for different teams, this will do.

Again, these lineups are what seem to be the general consensus on each team’s board (mixed with a bit of my opinion) - if you disagree, by all means let me know where I’ve went wrong:

Adelaide

HF: Lynch Walker Gallucci
FF: Betts Jenkins McAdam

Brisbane

HF: Rayner Hipwood Taylor
FF: McInerney McStay Cameron

Carlton

HF: Fisher Curnow Petrevski-Seton
FF: Fasolo McKay McGovern

Collingwood

HF: Thomas Mihocek Hoskin-Elliott
FF: DeGoey Cox Stephenson

Essendon

HF: Fantasia McKernan Smith
FF: Stringer Daniher McDonald-Tipungwuti

Fremantle

HF: Walters Hogan Colyer
FF: Matera Taberner Lobb

Geelong

HF: Dahlhaus Ratugolea Menegola
FF: Parfitt Hawkins Cockatoo

Gold Coast

HF: Ainsworth Day Corbett
FF: Sexton Wright Young

Greater Western Sydney

HF: Deledio Cameron Greene
FF: Giles-Langdon Patton Himmelberg

Hawthorn

HF: Burgoyne Gunston Wingard
FF: Breust Roughead Puopolo

Melbourne

HF: Petracca T.McDonald Melksham
FF: Hannan Weideman Neal-Bullen

North Melbourne

HF: Anderson Wood Atley
FF: Ziebell Brown Simpkin

Port Adelaide

HF: R Gray Marshall Boak
FF: Motlop Dixon Lycett

Richmond

HF: Caddy Riewoldt Edwards
FF: Rioli Lynch Butler

St Kilda

HF: Billings Bruce Kent
FF: Gresham McCartin Membrey

Sydney

HF: Hayward Reid Papley
FF: Ronke Franklin McCartin

West Coast

HF: Cripps Darling Rioli
FF: Ryan Kennedy Vardy

Western Bulldogs

HF: Dickson Boyd McLean
FF: Gowers Schache Lloyd

For what it’s worth, I’m picking Richmond from that bunch, closely followed by West Coast. The Tigers seem to have the perfect mix.

I'd take Hawthorn's (but am biased), but West Coast, Richmond and GWS are all quality. Still got NFI why Melbourne would get rid of Hogan. Terrible decision.
Needed a strong key back (May), a skilful winger (Kolodjashnij) and a decent 18-year-old (pick 23) more than we needed our second best key forward. Sam Weideman also fits our high-pressure game style better as he puts in a second effort if he doesn’t mark the ball.

Additionally, in the elimination final, Weideman did something that Hogan rarely (if ever) does - dominate against a top eight side.

Nothing against Jesse, but we have a much more balanced side now. Made perfect sense.

A quick attempt at a ranking:
  1. Richmond
  2. Hawthorn
  3. Collingwood
  4. West Coast
  5. Sydney
  6. Melbourne
  7. Port
  8. Essendon
  9. GWS
  10. Adelaide
  11. North
  12. Geelong
  13. Brisbane
  14. Carlton
  15. St Kilda
  16. Bulldogs
  17. Fremantle
  18. Gold Coast
Very difficult to assess teams in the middle there. In fact I could easily move most teams up or down a few places.

Has to be Richmond. They have 2 of the top 3 forwards in the league + 3-4 above average small forwards in Caddy, Rioli and Higgins.

It's hard to say this though without seeing it in action, on paper it's an excellent forward line but it remains to be seen how Riewoldt and Lynch function together.

Our midfield is probably a rung below the top-tier. Our defence is in the top-tier, but West Coast are probably a bit ahead if you look at it as a unit. Our full-strength forward line however looks top-notch.

If Riewoldt's form is anything like the last 2 years, Caddy maintains what he normally does in our forward line and Lynch has a decent start at Richmond, then I really look forward to what this group of forwards can produce in 2019.

I am also silently hoping that Balta can sneak into this forward line to make it tall and physically strong, but I understand that this may not work in modern footy.

You put Carlton at 14, I'd take Freo's forward line over that quite easily.

I’d be very easily persuaded about changing that ranking. Freo probably is slightly better.

Curnow will be a star next year. As will Hogan.

I think McKay will equal Tabs.

McGovern will have a better year than Lobb.

Fisher is better than Colter.

Fasolo is better than Matera but both aren’t that good.

Walters shits all of SPS.

So yeah Freo slightly ahead.

Carlton have not kicked above 100 since mid 2016. Freo comfortably have the better forward line.

Between Richmond and WC.

Kennedy and Darling are pretty much equal to Lynch and Riewoldt

Comes down to the rest -

Cripps v Edwards
Ryan v Caddy
W Rioli v Butler
Vardy v D Rioli

Probably lean Richmond because Ryan is still too unproven at this stage. Seems to have the most x factor of the lot though

Richmond, West Coast. And Collingwood's forward line going from crap to easily above average drove a lot of their success.

Essendon have a lot of talent but I'm not convinced they have the right 2nd tall to work with Daniher and who knows how Stringer goes there.

GWS have a good top 4 in Greene, Cameron, Himmelberg and Langdon, just need to find the right 1 or 2 others.

Sydney shouldn't be underrated, if they had any kind of supply then Franklin, McCartin, Heyward, Papley, Ronke with a rotating Heeney and Parker would be very hard to stop.

Really like Hipwood, Rayner, Cameron for Brisbane, like McStay as well, just a matter of how they can round that out.

Adelaide are a bit too old and too young/inexperienced, not a fan of that.

By the way teams usually play 7 forwards, should probably be written like that. Although the high half forward is really just a midfielder.

Your post reminded me. Man I want to see Rioli v Rioli in a final next year.
