Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

The hawks biggest challenge at the moment is KPP.

If we had picked up Lynch (yeah I know, we were never in the hunt) in addition to the swag of players we did land then we'd have people starting to talk about us in top 4/premiership terms.

Key position players a real problem for us, and if we draft one this time we won't see him hit acceptable form until 2022 at the earliest.

Put simply hawks need to find a key position player that can perform at a high level for the next 5 years as Mitchell , O'Meara, Wingard play through their peak years and Gunston, Breust, Smith, Stratton continue to play A grade level footy for a couple of years at least.

Is O’Brien in the Hawks best 22? No.

Hawthorn should adopt the Carlton approach. Recruit 2 or 3 Western Sydney players every off-season and still finish last. :D

Hawks are trying hard you got a suns dud a tigers one an payed pick 19 for one haha! Worst then carlton..

but I'm sure 2 kick nash an O'Brien will lead the hawks to another finals smashing lol

He probably has, but only against his mob...

And if O'Brien played against the other 16 sides, like he does against Melbourne, he'd be worth two first round picks himself. A Melbourne specialist unfortunately. If we could tap into whatever happens to him when he sees a demons jumper, we'd not be crying over missing out on Lynch.

I would say no.

The 3peat team had its fair share of talent from the elite end.
Hodge, Lewis, Roughead, Buddy, Rioli, Birchall, Smith - all critical to their success, all of them 1st rd picks.
McEvoy, Lake, Gunston, Burgoyne, Hale - all cost 1st rd picks
Frawley was considered the equivalent of one as a FA
And now, Mitchell cost them a 1st in the biggest trade steal of all time. Jaeger cost them a 1st and a raft of other picks.
And Wingard has cost them 2.

I'd argue you take Buddy and Lewis out of the threepeat side, and they don't win that many premierships.
So it was a draft where they had 3x top 10 picks and nailed each one, on top of a number of other round 1 successes and drafting of high end talent in whilst a destination club that led to their success.

You are glossing over how many early picks we stuffed up. We probably stuffed up about as many as we hit. That means even Hawthorn's recruiting team which is probably above average should consider any top level player they can get for two first rounders, because it costs them about 2 first rounders to get a decent player via the draft anyway. Furthermore that was when we had a few top 10 picks. The chances are even lower for first rounders after pick 10, so if we can get a top player for two picks (or even 1 pick in Mitchell's case) after 10 then that is a move we should definitely be strongly considering over going to the draft.

Feels like they've gone the Swans/Cats route of trying to rebuild whilst still making finals.
Yet to see a team succeed in that approach.

Yeah, if you ignore the most recent 3-peat. After winning the flag in 2008 we have a few key retirements (Croad and Crawford probably the best of them). Finished just out of finals in 2009 (thanks to your mob), scraped into finals in 2010 to get bundled out Essendon style in week 1. Instead of falling down the ladder for a big rebuild we brought in Gibson, Burgyone, Lake, Hale, and got some hits with the picks we had left over after getting those deals done. The way I see it, the only difference this time around is that we are building the elite core via trades instead of the scatter gunning the draft. I haven't seen a convincing argument in this thread on why that approach of building a core is any less effective than doing via the draft. In fact I'd argue it has several advantages.

It could be that with an array of average talls the hawks could be one good KPP away from being really in the mix.

In 2012 this was Brian Lake. If another fullback emerged could hawks revisit Frawley at HF or FF?

Yep. And never understood the Hawks posters who said “we don’t need Lynch”.

KPF stocks are scarily bad. Hoping and praying for Nash and Mitchell Lewis to become champions - and if they do I will cry beers of joy

Big fan of Mitchell Lewis. Nash looks talented but not sure he plays like KPP

Carlton gave up Pick 7 for Kristian Jaksch and Pick 19 (Blaine Boekhorst).

Let's not get into this battle of who is worse at the trade table because Carlton have a history so littered with shoddy deals this would turn into a 120 page thread.

You are aware this is a hawks topic so please stay on topic thanks.

Mitch Lewis there is a player you can build the next flag with. but unsure kew rovers can afford him

Your posts are painful to read. Please complete year 8 English class and then return to us. Thank you.

Mitchell Lewis was drafted a year later and at the end of the draft, and has to date performed a whole lot better than pick 10 messiah Harry McKay.

Well that's just not true. Maybe in time, but you're having a laugh

He's had less exposure to AFL, but on exposed form in the VFL he's kicked more goals this season than McKay has in 3 years of VFL footy and in less games.

Clarkson will find a way around this minor problem

Maybe a 31 year old like with Hale Or Lake?

Mohr outside the box thinking to come...
Really hoping Mitchell Lewis develops well this year. Nash is another one to think about as a KPF.

Way too early for Kosi. Will he have enough time to develop with Frawley and Mohr? Is Brand going to get there

We don’t have obvious up and coming Stars in these positions for sure

I think the talk of KP's is a little bit overblown. Sure they would love an extra gun KPF but they still have Gunston right now. Richmond won a flag only 2 years ago with their Riewoldt lead side with no other KPF's of note. They obviously have Sicily down back as well.

I don't believe their list can't succeed because of their KP talent, KPD's are not that hard to find. On the flip side I don't think their midfield has enough quality, particularly on the inside. Mitchell is their only elite player and there is a massive over-reliance on him. O'Meara is borderline and very injury prone. Scully and Smith are good wingers and if Scully is fit this year then they will go well. If Wingard goes onto become some great contested mid then I'll eat my words but lets see where he plays first.

What I think will happen is that over the course of the year - they will suffer as their many older and injury prone players eventually succumb to injuries at some point. On the law of averages its just simply bound to happen. Expect to see them start the season a lot better than they end it unless young players from the reserve who are virtual unknowns improve out of sight.

Your final point is what happened over the last couple of years. Aside from our pretty terrible Finals this year, our kids had stepped up very well.

At the start of the year would anyone have put money on us having 2 Rising Star nominees?

Injuries don’t strike equally. Even among the older teams
