News Scott Lycett signs with Port Districts

Has form on the red cans. Welcome back mate.View attachment 571341
2010 reserves premiership coached by Darren Mead and Port won 11.6 72 v Sturt 8.15 63. Went to the game with my mate, whose younger cousin was Brad McKenzie who played for Sturt was 17 and taken pick 18 by North the next year. Sam Gray kicked 3 goals that day. Scott played ok that day - didnt make best 6 - but was serviceable and I thought we have to draft him.

Thanks to Power Pete for this photo from several at the following link. Scott fist up on the right and pretty sure that is a young beardless Frodo in the middle at the back. Terry and Tim Milera played as did Justin Hoskin.

Need to see a few - Lycett taps to Gray - snap - goal - in 2019.

Maybe Lycett can tell Hinkley how West Coast set up against Port, what they really think of us and why Simpson tactically pisses all over Hinkley at AO when the game gets tight.

Except it's not tactics, it's mindset.
A shrimp on McGovern is a tactic. A stupid mindset by Hinkley, but a basic tactic.

I doubt that was a Hinkley tactic, more an inability to deliver under pressure from our players and leaders.
We've played Impey, Johnson, Sam Gray on McGovern. I'm not talking about who we played on him in the dying minute of Rd 21. Hinkley has this dumb tactic of refusing to pick a 3rd tall to play on McGovern and make him accountable so that he can't just zone off. Go back to 2015 and see who we have selected to play on McGovern.

It actually worked in the most recent game. Trouble is he then went forward and kicked the match winner. Ports.

No it didn't work. We lost.

Johnson kicked 3 goals but 2 of then had nothing to do with him beating McGovern. He was in the right place at the right time twice in the goal square after a massive Dixon tackle and a bizarre Polec kick. He beautifully beat and ran off McGovern for the other goal.

McGovern had no impact on the game until the last kick though.

Being in the right place at the right time is exactly how McGovern plays. He leaves his man to zone off.

When a faster player is put on him suddenly he has to worry about what happens if the ball gets out the back. But he still has to be mindful of Dixon.

We’ll do exactly the same thing next year and it will work just fine.

McGovern did his job and got in the way of Dixon and stopped him taking marks. He didn't need to dominate and Johnson could not block him from impacting on Dixon.

It was a stupid tactic to play someone 12cms and 15 kilos lighter than McGovern on him.

Frampton would have done a better job. Ken is clueless around beating the Eagles defence.

Worked quite well, hopefully Marshall builds his strength (and has done this year whist injured) because he has the pace to pull of and out run McGovern around the ground and also the athleticism to beat him at ground level like a small but also has the height to go with him in the air.

What are you talking about? We were up by 28 points halfway though the third quarter. Who cares if Dixon couldn’t take marks? His presence ensured that others were brought into the game by the simple fact that McGovern was worried about him.

As soon as Dixon went down, McGovern was no longer needed in defence and was sent forward, because Simpson knew that he needed a more mobile defensive structure since there wouldn’t be a dedicated target man.

The loss of Dixon affected not only our performance against West Coast, but our performance for the rest of the year. Without having a contested marking forward it becomes too easy for teams to push forward and press us.

This is why we will be looking at Ben King or hopefully trading up to Lukosius. Marshall is good, but he’s never going to be able to cope with three players on him. We need a player who can drag defenders up the ground.

Right place, right time, is what i want from a small forward!

If you look it objectively and in isolation, Johnson on McGovern worked well for us. You can’t discount the goals he kicked as that was absolutely part of his role. Gov can’t keep leeching off third man up as it cost them goals.

The reason we lost was not because of that matchup.

We all know why we lost, we were three crucial players down and out on our feet. You could see it coming for a quarter and a bit. There’s an argument to say taking out an extra runner for a tall makes it worse for us given what transpired. Sometimes the footy gods unclip the belt and take a dump.

Yes west coast had players out- but they had a full squad on the field- we lost our guys during the game.

Probably reported elsewhere but just had an interesting chat

- the saints offer was almost double ours
- the eagles offer was on par with ours
- family and SGray were the reasons he’s coming home

For a moment there I thought he came home so he he can play under the master tactician & coach of the century in Ken the last man standing Hinkley.
